Chapter 57
"We're not going to Dali?" Cheng Yushan asked, her eyes wide with disbelief.
At this moment, Cheng Yushan and Cheng Yusi were standing under the eaves of the backyard, wearing swimsuits and colorful cartoon towels, looking like two little lamas.
When the sun was at its brightest in the afternoon, Huang Ruoyu filled the inflatable pool she had bought on Taobao in the backyard with water and let her two children play in it all afternoon. However, just as the two children were having a great time, Huang Ruoyu called them out of the pool, ostensibly to let them "rest for a while and have something to eat," but actually she had something important to tell them. And this important matter required her and Chengshi to announce to the children together: the trip to Dali was canceled.
"We're not going to Dali? Why?"
Huang Ruoyu hasn't told her two children about her second pregnancy yet. However, when Cheng Yushan asked her about it, Huang Ruoyu and Cheng Shi already had a standard answer: "Because Dad and Mom think the timing isn't right."
However, after giving this standard answer, Huang Ruoyu felt that the answer was too rigid and arbitrary, so she softened her tone and gently added, "That's why we're not going to Dali now."
"Oh." The children didn't seem to care much about Huang Ruoyu's tone, and just answered absentmindedly. Cheng Yushan, on the other hand, listlessly lifted one bare foot to scratch the mosquito bite on her other ankle.
"Is this your reaction?" Cheng asked the children in a deliberately enthusiastic tone. "Aren't you going to cheer? I thought you would be especially happy to hear this news."
The two children quickly exchanged glances, then gave shy smiles—lately, the siblings had become increasingly confused about what their parents expected of them and how they should react.
So, Cheng Yushan, the older sister, mustered up the courage to ask her parents another question: "When are we going to Dali? Next year?"
"Maybe, we'll see when the time comes, but it won't be long. You don't need to worry about this anymore," Huang Ruoyu replied.
“That means we’ll be living here,” Cheng Yushan tried to understand Huang Ruoyu’s words and summarized it, “but not forever.”
"Alright, come on, give Mommy a kiss, then you two can go swimming again. Don't rush into the water, get yourselves wet first. Oh dear, look, Xiaosi's lips are all purple from the cold, how about he eats something else?"
Cheng Yusi pulled Cheng Yushan's hand and walked towards the poolside. As they walked, he whispered to his sister, "Sister, I'm going to pick up a twig over there. Then we'll sit in the water and pretend we run a coffee shop. I have some cookies. You can be the customer, and I'll be the waiter."
"I don't want to play."
“Let’s play. I’ll ask you, ‘What do you want?’ And you’ll say, ‘I want a cookie.’ Then I’ll say…”
"It's too childish, I don't want to play, the water is too cold." After saying that, Cheng Yushan moved far away from Cheng Yusi, sat on the grass by the pool, and buried her head between her knees.
Cheng Yushan didn't understand what "the timing is not good" meant, and why her mother's expression was both sad and funny when she said "it's about time"? Also, why didn't her father go to work today, even though it's Monday and he's not sick?
Cheng Yusi, who was still a carefree kindergarten child and hadn't started school yet, ate a few cookies while sitting in the pool. He ran to his older sister, opened his arms, and shouted, "Look at me, sister! Look at me! Look at me! I'm going to fall and die!"
As he spoke, Cheng Yusi swayed and fell onto the grass, rolled a few times, and finally lay there motionless. After lying there for a while, Cheng Yusi felt that his performance was very impressive, so he laughed out loud. However, Cheng Yushan did not glance at Cheng Yusi, but walked to the French window, squatted down, and furtively watched Cheng Shi and Huang Ruoyu in the living room.
Cheng Shi and Huang Ruoyu were sitting close together on the sofa. Cheng Shi was talking, while Huang Ruoyu listened and nodded. Cheng Yushan saw her father gesturing, his mouth opening and closing repeatedly, but she couldn't hear him speak; he looked quite amused. Later, her mother stood up and went into DK, while her father continued to lean back on the sofa and picked up his phone. After a while, Cheng Yushan saw her father go into the storage room, and when he came out, he was carrying a shovel—it seemed he was going to continue repairing the path in the front yard.
