Chapter 62
“The most important thing right now,” Cheng Shi has been talking to Huang Ruoyu about the most lately, “is to finish the content of that series of mini-programs first, and then I can talk to An Zheyuan about salary, what do you think?”
"Right, you can decide for yourself."
"However, this matter cannot be rushed. So much content cannot be completed overnight, and An Zheyuan himself understands this. Everything takes time, and there is no use in rushing it."
"Impatient? When have I ever been impatient? Have I ever pressured you? Wasn't everything your own decision?"
“I didn’t mean you were in a hurry,” Cheng Shi quickly reassured Huang Ruoyu. “We’re just chatting, aren’t we? What I mean is that I need to get those junk things fixed as soon as possible, so I’ll have to work overtime a few days this week to finish them quickly.”
Thus, this scene is often seen in the Haoskai Building after nightfall:
“First, you need to be clear about the resources you have,” Cheng Shi muttered as he typed on the keyboard. “When dealing with agents, salespeople need to be clear about the resources they have at their disposal so that they can leverage their advantages in cooperation with agents and foster closer collaboration.
"Start a new line..."
From that day on, Chengshi started working late almost every day. He preferred to eat dinner alone at a small restaurant near his company, and after dinner, he wouldn't rush home but would wander around the streets until he got tired before finding the nearest subway station to take the subway. Compared to being crammed into a stuffy subway during rush hour and hurriedly traveling between the city and the suburbs, Chengshi preferred this off-peak commute. It made him feel more independent and free, and therefore his mood improved considerably. Moreover, he felt that this arrangement, with the man as the breadwinner and the woman as the homemaker, and the man being busier with work, was more in line with the ideal state for a couple married for over ten years—having their own space without being overly dramatic, which he considered a mature marriage.
Then, suddenly it was late August, and two or three weeks had passed since Chengshi's last late-night talk with Huang Ruoyu. Recently, Chengshi's sense of time had been very poor. In fact, since the pandemic, Chengshi's sense of time had become increasingly worse. He couldn't even distinguish whether certain things happened this year, last year, or the year before.
"Is today Friday?" Narumi asked Jack during lunch.
Chengshi had always thought it was Tuesday or Wednesday; the only thing he was sure of was that it wasn't Monday. It wasn't until he was scrolling through his phone at lunchtime and saw a news headline titled "The First Lesson of the New Semester" that Chengshi realized summer vacation was over, and the National Day holiday was just around the corner, followed by Q4, and then another year would be gone.
In the final stage of Q3, the only trouble that Chengshi found difficult was that the content of the second mini-program was much more challenging than the one he had rushed out before. Chengshi had already made two versions, but each time he felt that there were logical problems and the key points were not highlighted, so he had no choice but to make a third version.
The computer screen showed 7:45 PM. Narumi noticed the entire 15th floor was eerily quiet, meaning all the inexplicably workaholics on that floor had already gone home. Soon, the cleaning ladies with vacuum cleaners and rags would be coming to clean. However, Narumi patiently went over his completed Word document again. This time, he felt excited because while the writing wasn't perfect, it was quite good. Now, he could head out to find somewhere to eat and then go home.
Cheng Shi leaned forward to shut down the computer, but then he heard the sound of a woman's high heels clicking away, and the sound was coming closer to him.
From the sound of footsteps, Chengshi knew it must be Candy, and he guessed that Candy had deliberately stayed behind to share the 15th floor with him alone. So Chengshi immediately made up his mind: he would spend the night with her tonight.
However, Chengshi knew he couldn't openly watch Candy walk through the open-plan office, so he crouched down and secretly peeked out from behind the partition at his workstation. Sure enough, it was Candy; Chengshi recognized her immediately from the corner of his eye. He clearly saw the slit in her skirt flutter with each step she took, but Chengshi also noticed that Candy was subtly glancing in his direction as well, though she didn't dare look him directly in the eye.
And so, Candy walked straight past Chengshi's row of workstations, her high heels clicking as she disappeared into the distance. Chengshi, however, was confident that the footsteps would return, so while waiting, he comfortably leaned back in his chair and reopened the Word document he had been working on, allowing him to openly monitor the entire office floor through his computer screen. When the high heels returned, Candy would only see Cheng Sir, engrossed in his work.
"Understanding a company's brand awareness, development history, market share, and market influence are crucial factors in attracting distributors. It's best to remember successful collaborations between the company and other distributors, set benchmarks, demonstrate the company's potential for cooperation, and create value together with distributors," Cheng Shi muttered from his document.
"Hi," Candy appeared, meeting Narumi's gaze, and spoke first, "Frankie, still working overtime so late?"
Candy feigned surprise at having just noticed Narumi, but her flushed face betrayed her.
Cheng Shi really shut down the computer this time, then slowly stood up. Then, just like those people who leave work on time every day, he walked towards her easily and lazily.
"You're working this late too? Let's go grab something to eat," Chengshi said to Candy.
