Chapter 66
By the time Sun Pengfei, who was a little tipsy, finally realized what a rare and wonderful moment this was, the taillights of the taxi that came to pick up Cheng Shi and Suningna had already disappeared on the road in front of Starry.
As the music playing from Starry played, Sun Pengfei solemnly helped Huang Ruoyu up by the arm and led her back into the House.
In Sun Pengfei's guilty-ridden fantasies, he never imagined that he would one day actually have such an opportunity to be alone with Huang Ruoyu. What's even more remarkable is that he didn't have to painstakingly arrange this opportunity himself; it was practically a gift from heaven!
However, when Sun Pengfei walked back into Starry with Huang Ruoyu, his previously dazed mind suddenly cleared up: Was this really an opportunity given to him by God? Why couldn't Huang Ruoyu and Su Ningna take a taxi home, instead of him and Chengshi staying behind? Why did they have to stay and wait to get the car?
However, by the time Sun Pengfei finally remembered this strange question, he and Huang Ruoyu had already arrived in the center of Starry's dance floor. Huang Ruoyu was looking at him seriously. So, all Sun Pengfei could do now was pretend to protect Huang Ruoyu with his arms and sway his body to the music.
Sun Pengfei was certainly not foolish enough to ask Huang Ruoyu if she had deliberately made this arrangement, much less foolish enough to allow himself to think that Huang Ruoyu was hinting at something. So, Sun Pengfei could only blush and dance along with Huang Ruoyu, though his nervous fingers would sometimes unconsciously brush against her body, then he would pretend to be protecting her from the surrounding crowd. However, as they swayed to the music, Sun Pengfei was filled with gratitude. He couldn't help but silently thank God for making such an arrangement—since things had come to this point, he no longer wanted to rack his brains trying to figure out whether it was God or someone else who had arranged this situation.
In Sun Pengfei's view, the current situation was somewhat similar to the one he had with Huang Ruoyu last summer, only this time it was better. Last year, Huang Ruoyu was drunk, so Sun Pengfei knew that even if he humbly hugged her tightly and pressed against her, it would only be a one-sided action, and he wouldn't get any response. Because Huang Ruoyu was completely drunk then, she had no idea how much of an impact and opportunity she was giving Sun Pengfei. Moreover, that time, Huang Ruoyu always tilted her head back and chattered incessantly in Sun Pengfei's ear, but it didn't feel like the intimate whispers of lovers; it was more like they were separated by an entire galaxy.
This time, however, it was completely different. Huang Ruoyu was very clear-headed, and she hardly uttered a word. Moreover, like Sun Pengfei, she reacted subtly to physical touch and to every attempt by Sun Pengfei to probe her.
Sun Pengfei and Huang Ruoyu were engaging in silent physical interaction.
However, Sun Pengfei was distracted and felt that he was about to be tested and surrender.
"Would you like something else to drink?" Sun Pengfei asked, his face flushed, after giving up.
"Whatever," Huang Ruoyu replied succinctly and coldly.
But when Sun Pengfei and Huang Ruoyu stood at the bar drinking craft beer, Sun Pengfei couldn't find a topic to talk about. He was like a silly boy on his first date with a girl, sweating profusely.
"How about this," Sun Pengfei finally managed to say after a long pause, his voice muffled, "I'll go check on the parking lot."
Sun Pengfei told himself that if Huang Ruoyu gave him even the slightest hint at this moment, such as smiling and saying something like "What's the rush?", he would throw everything to the back of his mind—his wife, his son, his cowardice, everything—and then run towards his goddess Huang Ruoyu without any hesitation.
However, Huang Ruoyu didn't even look at him directly with her beautiful eyes, and said to him indifferently, "Go ahead."
Sun Pengfei stepped into the darkness through the gravel path. He felt something binding him tightly beneath his feet. What bound him might be reason, morality, or habitual conformity. Sun Pengfei thought nothing would happen next; nothing could possibly happen with such a cold beauty! But now, Sun Pengfei couldn't help but ponder the questions that had been troubling him: Why didn't Huang Ruoyu go home and instead stayed with him? Why didn't she go to Dali or somewhere else? Why didn't she just die? To hell with this tormenting, annoying, and illusory fantasy of "love"—to hell with "love"!
Sun Pengfei, frustrated, wished all these things would disappear from his life, disappear forever. But as he approached the big tree, he silently began to pray again: Those cars blocking Chengshi's way, please don't move! Please! Please…
