Chapter 74
When Chengshi returned home, Huang Ruoyu was busy at DK while watching a mindless short drama on her phone.
Narumi didn't notice where the children were, but walked straight into DK, sat on the bar stool in front of the central island, and exclaimed, "What a lovely day!"
"Hmm, not bad."
Seeing that Huang Ruoyu was engrossed in the short drama and only gave perfunctory answers, Chengshi went upstairs and enjoyed a long and incredibly refreshing hot shower in the bathroom. After showering, he used a hairdryer, hairspray, hair clay, and even Huang Ruoyu's duckbill clips to style his hair, following video tutorials on Xiaohongshu (a Chinese social media platform). Then, Chengshi rummaged through his wardrobe and found three shirts, five T-shirts, and various pants. After much consideration, he finally chose a navy blue polo shirt to match his khaki canvas pants, which made his legs look longer. However, even after choosing the clothes, Chengshi still fidgeted in front of the mirror, rolling up the cuffs of the polo shirt, folding down the pant legs, turning up the collar, and unbuttoning all the buttons. He even leaned closer to Huang Ruoyu's vanity, making several expressions while staring at himself in the mirror. Finally, Chengshi determined that his profile, with his lips tightly closed, had the most defined and handsome features. Then she sprayed herself with two full pumps of perfume.
After finally finishing all that, Cheng Shi returned to DK on the first floor, sat on the bar stool in front of the island, scrolled through her phone, and casually tapped the marble countertop of the island with her fingers. Then she looked up and glanced at Huang Ruoyu, and then stared at Huang Ruoyu closely. Finally, she noticed something different about her: Huang Ruoyu had actually dug out her old maternity dress and was wearing it!
“You look quite cute in this dress,” Cheng Shi said.
"Thanks."
Is there any beer left in the fridge?
"There shouldn't be any more. You didn't replenish it after you drank it, did you?"
"Damn it." Cheng Shi cursed subconsciously, not at anyone in particular, he just felt like he wanted to drink something.
"I made some iced tea; there's some in the fridge if you'd like."
"Okay." Although Chengshi didn't want to drink this tasteless, childish stuff, he still opened the refrigerator, took out the pitcher of iced tea, poured himself a glass, and then asked, "By the way, where are the kids? I haven't heard them calling for ages."
"I went to Old Sun's house."
"Oh, I was originally planning to read them some picture books or something."
After saying that, Chengshi lowered his head and continued scrolling through his phone. Huang Ruoyu continued to busy herself by the sink. After a while, she was still incredibly bored, so Chengshi stood up, walked behind Huang Ruoyu, and wrapped her arms around her lower abdomen.
However, in that instant, Chengshi clearly felt Huang Ruoyu's body stiffen.
“Baby,” Cheng Shi paused for a moment, but then continued as he had rehearsed, “This is a crazy summer, I know you… I know we’re both under pressure, I know you right now…”
"You want to know why I won't sleep with you, right?" Huang Ruoyu struggled out of Cheng Shi's embrace. "I'm sorry, Shi Tou, I don't want to talk about this right now."
Cheng Shi hesitated for a moment, then decided to maintain a friendly attitude that would facilitate communication. So he solemnly kissed Huang Ruoyu's hair and said, "Okay, so what do you want to talk to me about now?"
Huang Ruoyu had already finished washing the dishes and drained the dirty water from the sink, but she continued to stand there rubbing the dishcloth. Only after she wrung out the dishcloth, hung it on the rack, and left the sink did she turn around to face Chengshi and begin to speak.
This was the first time Huang Ruoyu had really looked at Cheng Shi properly that day. However, when she saw him, when she saw the clean-cut and handsome Cheng Shi, she looked as if she had been frightened.
"Can we not say anything now?" Huang Ruoyu said to Chengshi in a pleading tone. "What I'm trying to say is, can we just live one day at a time, try to make the most of each day, and stop thinking about discussing things all the time? We're just living our lives; there's nothing worth discussing all the time!"
Cheng Shi smiled at Huang Ruoyu, his expression like that of a professional psychologist in a TV drama, and then he said gently, "I didn't mean to discuss anything, that's not what I meant, what I meant was..."
“Alright then,” Huang Ruoyu took a step back, “Let me put it this way, I don’t love you anymore. Are you satisfied with this explanation?”
Fortunately, Cheng Shi still had that professional psychologist-like smile on her face, so he didn't take what she said seriously.
“No, that’s not a reason,” Narumi continued gently. “What I want to know is your true feelings. I feel like you’re running away right now, but what are you running away from? Are you running away from seeing a therapist? Or are you trying to escape the responsibilities you need to take on in the time leading up to seeing a therapist? Do you think my analysis makes sense?”
“Maybe,” Huang Ruoyu turned her back, “I don’t know, maybe your analysis is right. Actually, analyze it however you like, do whatever makes you happy.”
"Damn it!" Cheng Shi cursed under his breath again, then tried to maintain a professional and objective attitude, saying, "This isn't about whether I'm happy or not. What I want to say is, life has to go on, whether you see a therapist or not. Damn it, I know you're feeling down right now because it's been a crazy summer. But the key is that we're both under a lot of pressure. You're not the only one under pressure, you're not the only one who's been wronged! So I think as a couple, we should try our best to help each other and share each other's burdens. And can you think about me too? I've been through a lot of messy things lately. To be honest, I've actually thought about it, and I think I should see a therapist too, actually..."
As Cheng Shi spoke, he turned his face to look out the window, so that he could see Huang Ruoyu's handsome profile.
"...Actually, I wanted to sit down and have a good talk with you. There's another important reason for this, because I want to tell you something. How should I put it? Something...something that happened to me a while ago, which you could say was a very irrational thing..."
Chengshi's brain hadn't even started working at high speed yet, but his unhelpful mouth had already started rambling on and on about his relationship with Candy—that's what they call the mouth being faster than the brain.
Without hesitation, Cheng Shi described Candy as "a female migrant worker in Beijing, someone I had a little bit of work-related contact with," without telling Huang Ruoyu that Candy was the secretary on the 15th floor. He repeatedly emphasized that he had no feelings for Candy, but Candy's desire for him was very strong and uncontrollable—in other words, Candy constantly seduced him every few days, and he finally couldn't resist, so... he made the mistake that all men make.
As always, Chengshi's voice was as calm, persuasive, and infectious as ever. He would occasionally hesitate and pause as he spoke, but he did so simply to make his speech more rhythmic.
In summary, Sungsil's confession, delivered without being asked, was incredibly moving and emotional. It possessed both the power of repentance and the romantic charm of telling a love story. It can be considered a textbook example of a confession, and is definitely something that celebrities can learn from when their scandals come to an end.
