Chapter 164 In the Next Life, Gone
The century-old trees rustled in the cold wind, exuding a chilling aura.
Gu Xingnian stood under the sacred tree, looked up at the wishing ball high above, where a red and a green ball were intertwined.
They threw it up together.
She stretched out her slender finger and pointed, "Help me take it down."
Her voice was very soft and flat.
"Yes, madam." Lin Qi didn't dare to ask any more questions. He quickly found a long bamboo pole and carefully picked down the pair of wishing balls for her.
She reached out and caught the pair of wishing balls.
Buzz—Lynch's phone rang.
He glanced at the number on the screen and his heart leaped into his throat.
He quietly swiped to answer the call, then quickly added, "Honey, it's too cold today. We've got the wishing ball, let's head back now."
"Madam, you are not feeling well right now, and it's too windy here."
"Wait a minute." Gu Xingnian began to disassemble the red wishing ball.
Her movements were slow, and her fingertips turned slightly white from the force she was applying.
"Lin Qi, have you ever been in a relationship?"
He hesitated for a moment, then answered honestly, "No."
She continued what she was doing, her voice drifting away in the cold wind.
"Many times, what we fall in love with is not the other person, but our own love."
"One-sided sacrifice is not love, it is selfishness, because you are depriving the other person of the opportunity to stand with you."
Lin Qi didn't understand, but he felt a little sad.
On the other end of the phone, the indifferent voice was even more unsettling.
"Snap!" The wishing ball was finally opened.
Two neatly folded notes fell out.
The first one features his characteristically sharp handwriting.
May my wife, Xingnian, live a peaceful and prosperous life.
The second one.
I wish that in the next life, I could meet my wife again.
Gu Xingnian's eyes seemed to be stung by the handwriting, and her smile was heartbreaking.
"You haven't even finished living this life, and you're already thinking about the next life? That's wishful thinking."
She held the note in her palm and looked at the tree full of wishing balls.
"Let's pick out the rest too."
"ah?"
But Lin Qi dared not disobey, and could only remove the balls that carried the blessings one by one.
Gu Xingnian sat on the stone bench and slowly unpacked it.
Sure enough, it was their wedding, and the gifts thrown up by the guests were all blessings for Mr. and Mrs. Fu.
Wishing Mr. and Mrs. Fu a speedy delivery of their son.
Congratulations on your marriage! May you enjoy a long and happy life together.
May you be together forever, never to be apart.
She collected the notes one by one, piling them into a thick stack in front of her.
She held out her hand to Lynch, "Lighter."
Lin Qi hesitated before handing it over.
Clatter.
A pale blue flame shot up.
She lit the note in her hand and watched the blessings turn into black ashes and drift away with the wind.
Lin Qi exclaimed in surprise, "Madam, what's wrong...?"
She gazed at the small flame with a lingering sadness in her eyes.
"Fu Beichen, you are not important."
"You are just a failure in my life, not my whole life."
"Let's not meet again in the next life."
She spoke each word clearly and calmly.
The phone call was still ticking away, but my heart was breaking.
They were neither separated by life nor by death, but there was no ending.
Just then, light snow began to fall from the sky.
Cold, white, just a little bit... She reached out and caught a piece of cold crystal.
The snowflake melted quickly in her palm into a drop of water, icy cold.
The light snowflakes fell gently on her head and body, quickly covering her with a thin layer of white.
She stood there, like a soulless snow sculpture.
She turned around and slowly walked back. After taking only two steps, her body suddenly went limp and she collapsed.
Two men walked over from a short distance away.
The man walking in front was tall and upright, with a steady gait. Behind him, a tall bodyguard held up a huge black umbrella for him.
"Nian Nian".
His voice was low and urgent as he groped his way to pull the fallen person into his arms.
The body in his arms was like a block of ice that could never be warmed, making his heart tremble violently.
This time, Gu Xingnian had a recurring high fever, and her whole body was in a daze from the heat.
She felt as if she had been thrown into a giant steamer, her whole body burning hot, with scorching heat emanating from every crevice of her bones.
For a whole day and night.
Fu Beichen stayed by the bedside, touching her flushed cheeks and listening to her unconscious murmurs.
He regretted it.
He shouldn't have let her face all of this alone.
He reached out and pulled that burning hot body into his arms, holding her tightly.
She was muttering something, which he couldn't quite make out, but her uneasy murmurs burned a sharp pain in his heart.
At night, Gu Xingnian opened her eyes groggily, and in her vision was a blurry yet familiar outline.
She called out instinctively.
"Fu Beichen..." His voice was so hoarse it was almost unbearable.
She thought she was dreaming, so she reached out and hugged him even tighter.
The man's body stiffened, and then he used even more domineering force to imprison her in his arms.
He held her and kissed her.
His burning lips landed on her forehead, the tip of her nose, and finally her lips.
He couldn't help but hold her beneath him, using his own body to dispel the chill of her illness.
The next day, when Gu Xingnian woke up, it was already bright daylight, and she was lying in her familiar room in the villa.
The fever has subsided.
The sticky feeling on my body disappeared, as if I had been washed and felt clean and refreshed.
A familiar, refreshing scent seemed to linger in the air.
She sat up, feeling weak, as if she had just had a ridiculous dream.
Gu Xingnian threw off the covers, got out of bed, and went into the bathroom.
When she looked up and saw herself in the mirror, she froze.
On her neck, near her collarbone, were patches of purplish-red marks, both glaring and ambiguous.
This... is not a dream.
He came back!
When Lin Qi knocked on the door and came in, Gu Xingnian was already dressed.
He was carrying a delicate breakfast and a bag of clean clothes.
"Madam, how are you feeling today?"
Gu Xingnian walked out with a cold face, her eyes scraping at him like ice daggers.
"You touched me?"
Lin Qi was so startled that he shuddered and dropped the bag in his hand with a "thud" to the ground.
"Madam, I'm innocent! I wouldn't dare do that even if you gave me a hundred lives!"
He waved his hand hastily, his face turning pale.
Gu Xingnian's expression did not soften at all; on the contrary, it became even colder.
“You’re taking advantage of my vulnerability.” She pointed to her neck. “Look what’s on my neck.”
Lin Qi's gaze swept over, his pupils suddenly contracted, and he blurted out.
"That's President Fu..."
As soon as the words left his mouth, he wished he could bite off his own tongue and quickly reached out to cover his mouth tightly.
It's too late.
“Take me to him.”
Her voice wasn't loud, but it carried an undeniable command as she turned and walked downstairs.
Lin Qi was inwardly groaning.
He felt like he'd been tricked.
However, he had no evidence.
Oh God, help me! My life is in danger!
