Chapter 60 If You Dare, Jump! (Third Update, Vote Now!)
Water splashed everywhere.
Then, the flames went out, and the person fell silent, leaving only some fragments of the skirt floating on the water.
The garden was filled with a burnt smell and steam.
Gu Xingnian finished the last piece of meat on her plate.
The play is over.
She clapped her hands in satisfaction and wiped her mouth with a napkin.
Fu Beichen looked at her contented little face with a complex expression in his eyes.
This little woman is vengeful, and she retaliates so decisively and swiftly, using unexpected methods.
That's interesting!
The butler had already directed two male servants to frantically pull Fu Lanzhi out of the fountain.
Fu Lanzhi was soaked to the bone, her skirt was burned off, leaving only her underwear, her hair and eyebrows were singed, and there were multiple burn marks on her legs. She was a disheveled and trembling person, lying on the ground with unfocused eyes, clearly terrified.
Gu Xingnian lowered her head and looked at Fu Lanzhi, who was soaked to the bone on the ground.
The voice was soft and apologetic.
"Sorry, little sister. I was just playing a little joke on you."
Are you alright?
Fu Lanzhi suddenly raised her head, her unfocused eyes instantly filled with immense anger and fear!
She stared intently at Gu Xingnian, as if she wanted to pounce on her and tear her apart!
"Gu Xingnian! You did this on purpose!"
She screamed with all her might, her voice sharp and piercing!
"You did this on purpose! You wanted to burn me alive!"
She turned to Fu Beichen, crying and accusing him, "Brother! She tried to murder me! She was going to kill me!"
murder!
These two words were like a needle, precisely piercing a certain spot in Fu Beichen's heart.
His previously complex and unreadable gaze instantly turned cold.
In contrast, Gu Xingnian was on the verge of falling off her horse or drowning in the river, barely surviving!
Fu Lanzhi has the nerve to call it murder for such a minor injury caused by a "joke"?
Fu Beichen's voice was devoid of any warmth.
"housekeeper."
"Young Master," the butler bowed immediately.
"Send her back to the old house." Fu Beichen's tone left no room for argument. "Put her in solitary confinement for six months."
"Without my permission, you are never to set foot in the manor again."
Fu Lanzhi stared wide-eyed in disbelief, forgetting even to cry. "Brother! You can't do this to me! She's the one who's trying to hurt me! Brother!"
The butler had already accepted the order: "Yes, young master."
He gestured to two male servants to come forward and lift up Fu Lanzhi, who was still struggling and crying.
"Let me go! Let me go! Brother! I'm your sister! Brother—!"
Fu Lanzhi's cries faded into the distance, and the butler swiftly dragged Fu Lanzhi out.
Satisfied!
Gu Xingnian slept very soundly that night.
The next morning, Gu Xingnian tentatively moved her ankle and found it wasn't so painful anymore.
She slowly got off the ground and took two steps.
Hmm, the recovery is going fairly well.
After finishing breakfast, with nothing else to do, Gu Xingnian decided to go out for some fresh air.
She pushed open the door, intending to take a stroll around the neighborhood. The sun was shining brightly, and the air was fresh.
I had only taken a few steps when a faint melody drifted over.
Huh? What's that sound?
It's a rather unique tune, somewhat ethereal, and also... indescribable.
Curious, she followed the sound, which came from another direction of the manor.
"ah!"
She screamed in fright, her heart nearly leaping out of her throat.
She looked up and was met with Fu Beichen's expressionless face. "Fu Beichen! What are you doing! Put me down!"
Gu Xingnian struggled with her hands and feet, punching him on the shoulder.
Is this thing made of stone? It's surprisingly hard.
Fu Beichen ignored her, picked her up and strode forward with steady steps.
"Don't move." He said calmly, his tone devoid of emotion.
"I can walk by myself!" Gu Xingnian exclaimed in exasperation. Does this person have... that... that person-hugging fetish?
Fu Beichen didn't stop, and directly shoved her into the seat of an electric mobility scooter next to him.
His movements weren't gentle, and Gu Xingnian almost got shoved into the ground.
"Are you ever going to stop?" She straightened her clothes and glared at him.
Fu Beichen sat down next to her. The space was small, and their arms were almost touching. Gu Xingnian quietly moved to the side.
The car slowly started moving!
"Where are you taking me?" Gu Xingnian turned her head and asked him.
Fu Beichen remained silent, staring ahead, his profile hard and cold.
"Fu Beichen, if you don't say something, I'm jumping out of the car!" she threatened.
Even though the car isn't going fast, jumping out would probably still result in a fall.
Fu Beichen finally reacted.
He glanced at her sideways. His gaze was devoid of warmth or emotion; he simply looked at her calmly.
It's as if it's saying: If you're so capable, then jump.
Gu Xingnian: "..."
Fine, you win.
She turned her head and glared angrily ahead.
A short while later, the car stopped in front of a vegetable garden.
Intermittent guitar music drifted from not far away, accompanied by an old, hoarse male voice humming.
Thin wisps of smoke rose from the chimney of the cottage, meandering and drifting away.
An old woman slowly placed two bowls of food on a small square table in the middle of the courtyard.
The green vegetable garden was very well-maintained, and all kinds of vegetables looked vibrant.
There were a few small sheds nearby, from which came the sounds of rabbits nibbling, pigeons cooing, and kittens meowing, all mixed together, but not too noisy.
Gu Xingnian stood there, watching all of this.
It's so familiar, so very familiar.
The floodgates of memory were flung open by this scene.
She also had two years like that, tending a piece of farmland and keeping two elderly people company.
They work at sunrise and rest at sunset.
However, those two elderly people are no longer with us.
The singing continued, carrying the vicissitudes of time, occasionally interspersed with a few suppressed coughs.
Gu Xingnian felt a lump in her throat, and her eyes quickly welled up with tears.
The old man playing the guitar saw them, stopped plucking the strings, and stopped singing.
He put down the old guitar, stood up carefully, and the old woman came over as well.
"Mr. Fu, Mrs. Fu, hello!" Uncle Fang's voice was noticeably hoarse.
The old woman had a simple smile on her face and gentle eyes. "Breakfast was just made. If you don't mind, would you like to have some with me?"
Gu Xingnian shook her head gently, her voice low, "Thank you, but no need."
She paused, then turned her gaze to the lively little animals.
"Can I...go and feed the little rabbits?"
The old woman immediately smiled, "Of course, they love carrots the most."
She turned and walked quickly back into the house, soon taking out a small basket filled with chopped carrot strips.
"Here, take it."
Gu Xingnian picked up a carrot stick and handed it to the bravest white rabbit.
The rabbit came closer and quickly began to nibble at the food with its tiny, three-lobed mouth.
She picked up another one and fed it to another gray rabbit, her movements slow and deliberate.
It was quiet all around, with only the sound of rabbits chewing and the soft rustling of other small animals in the shed in the distance.
She was feeding the rabbits without looking up when she suddenly asked a question.
"Is Uncle Fang...?"
Her voice was soft, carrying both uncertainty and a certain understanding.
But she really saw it!
I noticed the barely perceptible slowness with which the old man got up, saw his sallow complexion, and heard the weakness that couldn't be concealed in his singing, along with those few coughs. He was no ordinary old man.
Fu Beichen did not hide anything, and his voice was calm.
"Uncle Fang is the steward's father."
"Liver cancer, in its final stage."
