Chapter 15: First Encounter The black car is stable...
The black car drove smoothly into the night, leaving the bright lights and hustle and bustle of the "Genting" club far behind.
Shen Shutong leaned on the passenger seat and looked out the window. Fu Jingchuan was driving intently.
The intense confrontation in the corridor just now was still replaying in her mind.
It turned out that his so-called "returning to one's roots" was a transaction full of humiliation and helplessness.
So, this is the "reason that cannot be told" he mentioned?
My heart felt sore and swollen, with a belated pain.
Her eyes unconsciously traced the blurry image, but her thoughts drifted uncontrollably, drifting to those memories from five years ago, softened by time but still vivid...
Late at night in the Stanford University library, the silence was so quiet that only the occasional tapping of keyboards could be heard. Just as the clock struck eleven, Shen Shutong rubbed his swollen temples and sighed as he looked at the mountain of business materials before him.
"Damn game theory case studies." She muttered softly, carefully pulling out a reference book as thick as a brick from the top shelf, but accidentally knocked over several books stacked next to it.
The books fell down with a clatter, landing squarely at the feet of a boy sitting next to him.
Shen Shutong quickly apologized: "I'm sorry! These books are too heavy, I couldn't keep my balance..."
She squatted down to help pick up the book, but was stunned when she looked up.
It’s Fu Jingchuan.
He was a genius known to everyone on campus. The algorithm he developed during his junior year was acquired by Google for a high price, and he was now a legend on campus. He was sitting under a bright light, two laptops in front of him. One screen scrolled with complex code, the other displayed real-time financial market data.
Fu Jingchuan raised his eyes, his deep black eyes appearing particularly bright under the light. He said nothing, but nodded slightly to accept the apology, then returned his gaze to the screen.
Shen Shutong noticed that he was reading the reference material she urgently needed - "Game Theory Practice".
"Wait, you're looking at this?" she asked, her voice filled with surprise. "I'm writing a paper on this!"
Fu Jingchuan raised his eyes again: "Your bookmark is on the wrong page. The explanation of the Nash equilibrium model on page 147 is incomplete. I suggest you refer to the supplementary explanation on page 89."
Shen Shutong blinked, surprised that he noticed the labels in her book, and curious about his precise suggestions. She opened her book and found that the parts she marked were indeed not comprehensive enough.
"How did you know I marked it..." She understood before she finished her sentence. When the books were scattered on the ground just now, he must have caught a glimpse of her pages.
"Thanks for the reminder." She raised her chin, a smile playing at the corner of her lips. "But I don't think the explanation on page 89 is the most complete. I found a more interesting point in a recent study in the journal."
Fu Jingchuan's eyebrows twitched. "The one Professor Li published last month?"
Now it was Shen Shutong's turn to be surprised. "Have you seen it?"
"I read it during the review process," he said casually, his fingers tapping rapidly on the keyboard. "The third case he cited has a logical flaw. I don't recommend using it in your paper."
Shen Shutong looked at the boy in front of her, who seemed only a year or two older than her, and couldn't help but feel a bit competitive. She was also one of the top students in the business school, and no one had ever dared to directly deny her references like this.
"What loophole?" she asked.
Fu Jingchuan stopped what he was doing and turned to her. His high nose and sharply defined jaw made him look more like a sculpture than a real person.
"He assumes that all participants are completely rational, but this is almost impossible in the real market." Fu Jingchuan said in a flat tone, "If you carefully read the data in Appendix 2, you will find that when the emotional factor variable is introduced, the results are completely different."
Shen Shutong was stunned for a moment, then quickly flipped to the appendix of the paper. Sure enough, those supplementary data that she had originally thought were irrelevant suddenly took on a whole new meaning after Fu Jingchuan's guidance.
"Interesting..." She muttered to herself, completely forgetting the time, and sat down on the chair opposite Fu Jingchuan. "So you think that even in business games, emotional factors should be taken into consideration?"
Fu Jingchuan didn't answer immediately, but looked at her for a moment. Shen Shutong could feel his gaze sliding from her eyes to her open textbook, where her densely packed notes were.
"In theory, yes, but quantifying emotions is always a challenge." He leaned forward slightly and pulled up a document from one of his computers. "This is a simple model I made a while ago. I tried to use an algorithm to simulate the decision-making patterns influenced by emotions."
Shen Shutong leaned over to look at the codes and charts on the screen, and a strand of long hair inadvertently fell to her cheek. Before she could react, Fu Jingchuan had naturally tucked the strand of hair behind her ear.
They were both stunned at the same time.
"Sorry," Fu Jingchuan quickly withdrew his hand, his voice a little tense, "I can't see the screen clearly."
Shen Shutong felt a little hot where his ear had touched her, but she quickly regained her composure and raised her eyebrows: "What a surprise. Rumor has it that you treat people very coldly and never apologize."
Fu Jingchuan's mouth curled up: "Rumors are always exaggerated."
They continued their discussion for nearly half an hour, with Fu Jingchuan not only patiently explaining the principles of the model but also sharing access to several reference libraries. Shen Shutong discovered that, although he was a quiet man, every comment he made was to the point, and unlike the image of a "cold genius" she had heard in the past, he was actually quite willing to share his knowledge.
"You should smile more," Shen Shutong said as he sorted through his notes as the discussion came to a close. "You look pretty when you smile. It's a waste of your beauty to always have a stern face."
Fu Jingchuan obviously didn't expect her to say that. He was stunned for a moment, then turned his head away. Shen Shutong was almost certain that his ears were a little red.
"It's getting late," he changed the subject, "You should go back. The girls' dormitory is about to lock up."
Shen Shutong glanced at her watch in surprise - it was almost twelve o'clock, and they had been chatting for so long. What surprised her even more was that Fu Jingchuan even knew the locking time of the girls' dormitory.
"How do you know the girls' dormitory..." She stopped asking before she finished, because Fu Jingchuan had already started packing up and obviously did not intend to answer this question.
She also stood up, but found that she had been sitting for too long and her legs were numb. She lost her balance and fell forward.
A strong arm supported her in time.
Fu Jingchuan had come to her side without her knowing. His hand was firmly supporting her elbow. He was so close that she could smell the faint mint scent on him.
"Be careful." His voice was close, and his breath gently brushed her hair.
At that moment, Shen Shutong inexplicably felt her heartbeat quicken. She raised her head and met his deep brows.
"Thank you." She said softly, and suddenly noticed that Fu Jingchuan was holding her mobile phone in his other hand, "This is..."
"You just dropped it on the chair." He handed the phone back to her, his fingertips brushing against her palm, bringing a subtle touch.
Just when Shen Shutong thought he would say something, Fu Jingchuan had already taken a step back and resumed his polite and distant attitude.
"Your paper," he suddenly said, "if you need further discussion, I'll be in the lab on the third floor of the Science and Technology Museum on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons."
Shen Shutong blinked, a smile appeared on the corner of his lips: "Okay! Looking forward to seeing you next time!"
His eyes softened a little: "Be careful on the road."
After saying that, he turned and left, his slender figure walking further and further away in the corridor of the library.
Shen Shutong stood there until his figure completely disappeared, then she looked down at her phone. She was surprised to find that a new contact had appeared on the screen.
"Fu Jingchuan", below which is a line of email addresses and phone numbers.
"Rumors really aren't to be believed," she murmured to herself, her eyes gleaming with interest. "This guy isn't aloof at all."
