Chapter 296 The Truth of What Happened Back Then
"Oh, what did he do?"
Shen Jingxiu was curious.
Ji Ying briefly recounted what had happened in the past few days.
A meaningful smile appeared on Shen Jingxiu's lips.
"He probably already knew your identity."
Ji Ying was stunned by his words.
Shen Jingxiu continued, "When we were in danger in Lan City, he wanted to protect me because he was on a mission. Later, on his way to rescue you, he was ambushed. When he arrived at the scene of your accident, he was also on the verge of death. When the car was salvaged, there were only the bodies of Su Lan and the driver, but you were missing. He couldn't save three lives, and he knelt by the river all night."
"Although you were legally declared dead three years later, he would investigate any clue related to you, whether true or false, over the years. The guilt he felt for you weighed on him for fourteen years. It wasn't until the day he returned to Beijing and told me he was married that I saw a faint sense of relief in his eyes. I thought he had finally found love, but I never expected that this guy would still marry my daughter."
“But…” Ji Ying’s voice was a little hoarse, “He knows who hurt you like this back then, yet he calls that person his brother.”
Shen Jingxiu laughed so hard his shoulders shook.
"Don't delve too deeply into the superficialities between men. Just because he doesn't make things public doesn't mean he hasn't done them. If the opponent is powerful... then we'll slowly gnaw at them; it takes time to shake their foundations."
Ji Ying clenched her fingers and said, "The person who knocked my car into the river was Pang Shijun."
A dark undercurrent surged in Shen Jingxiu's eyes, but it quickly subsided.
"Yizhi doesn't allow others to collect your biological samples because he's afraid you'll fall into Pang Daiyao's hands, which would be a truly worse than death. He doesn't let the Shen family know your identity because he feels that with his current strength, he's not enough to protect you completely. And he doesn't let you take revenge on your mother because he doesn't want you and your mother to become mortal enemies, with no room for reconciliation in the future."
When Madam Shen was mentioned, Ji Ying's eyes darkened.
Shen Jingxiu tried to get out of bed, and Ji Ying quickly went to help him, but he waved his hand and insisted on getting out of bed on his own.
After taking a couple of unsteady steps, his pace gradually became steady.
Shen Jingxiu walked to the water dispenser and poured her a glass of water.
"As for Shen Ruofu and Shen Aizhu, he only treats them as younger sisters. Compared to how he treated you back then, it's not even one ten-thousandth of what he did. Everything he did may have made you uncomfortable, but his original intention was to pave the safest way out for you in the midst of turbulent times. His heart is good to you."
Ji Ying lowered her head, took a sip of water, and placed the water glass on her lap with both hands.
“Shen Ruofu once sent assassins to hunt me down in Kun City. She must be backed by Pang Shijun.”
Shen Jingxiu's expression hardened, and he reached out to gently stroke her arm, asking softly, "Are you hurt?"
Ji Ying looked surprised by his words. "I have no evidence, yet you believe me? Shen Ruofu and Shen Aizhu are your daughters who have been with you for fourteen years."
But at this moment, Shen Jingxiu's eyes were full of his daughter.
"Don't I know what kind of person my daughter is? If I don't trust you, am I supposed to trust a stranger who isn't related to me by blood? They don't even know their own place, daring to try to harm their adoptive parents' own flesh and blood. They're utterly ungrateful and worse than pigs and dogs! I'll let the one who died go, but I won't let the one who's still alive get away with it."
A sudden surge of warmth filled my heart.
Ji Ying lowered her eyes, her fingertips tightening slightly. The bitterness of being alone for more than ten years seemed to finally find its home at this moment.
After a moment of contemplation, Shen Jingxiu continued, "If you still harbor resentment towards your mother, it's best to maintain the status quo for now. She's getting very close to Shen Ruofu now, and if Shen Ruofu becomes a pawn of the Pang family, it would be dangerous for your identity to be exposed. It's better to keep your mother in the dark, so that we can make arrangements in secret."
He glanced at the time, his tone turning to one of caution, "Pang Daiyao has planted many spies around here. Yizhi's secrecy can only last so long. You can't stay here any longer. Go and call him in; I have a few words to say to him."
Ji Ying nodded, turned around and opened the door. Liang Yizhi was standing in the doorway. Their eyes met, but Ji Ying looked away first, without saying a word to him, and walked out.
Does she still want a divorce?
Liang Yizhi frowned, walked into the room, and closed the door.
He was quite surprised to see that Shen Jingxiu was not lying in the hospital bed.
Shen Jingxiu stood with his hands behind his back, his face showing no sign of illness.
He looked at him calmly and said slowly, "It's your responsibility that my daughter is insecure and doesn't trust anyone."
"Yes." Liang Yizhi lowered his head.
Shen Jingxiu thought of something and suddenly his gaze sharpened.
"Is she unwell?"
Liang Yizhi paused for a moment before answering in a deep voice, "She has suffered a severe injury and her condition is not optimistic. The only solution I can find right now is that she will need to take medication for life."
Shen Jingxiu closed his eyes in heartache, then opened them again.
“Her mother has several project teams focusing on gene therapy, so perhaps she can find a solution.”
Liang Yizhi fell silent.
Shen Jingxiu suddenly raised an eyebrow and asked, "She doesn't remember where she put the things. Are you going to continue looking?"
Liang Yizhi's gaze was open and honest. "It would be best if I could find her. But for me, finding her is the most important goal that has already been achieved."
Shen Jingxiu nodded slightly. "Then let's maintain the status quo. Keep it a secret from her mother."
"But Madam Shen already hates her because of Shen Aizhu's death."
Shen Jingxiu remained silent for a moment.
"Her mother is too sentimental. The attachment of her adopted daughter, who has been with her day and night for more than ten years, has long become an inseparable bond for her. It is only natural that she was deceived for a time."
But then his gaze turned cold.
"I will handle the Shen family's affairs. But Pang Shijun tricked my daughter, and I can't let it go like this. What level of person is in charge of investigating Shen Aizhu's death?"
"It's the internal discipline review department."
Shen Jingxiu smiled slightly, his mind filled with grand strategies.
"Find a way to appoint an honest, low-ranking investigator who has no connection to the Pang family and is not known for his influence among the powerful and wealthy as the team leader. We won't interfere with the investigation results, nor will we give you any leverage against us. Can you do that?"
Upon hearing this, Liang Yizhi immediately understood his plan.
"That's what I was planning to do anyway."
Shen Jingxiu nodded, a cold glint flashing in his eyes.
"You dare to mess with my daughter? This time I'll make sure Pang Shijun is either dead or badly hurt."
Liang Yizhi nodded.
Shen Jingxiu stared at him, his tone becoming deep and serious.
"She was tricked by Pang Shijun and had the idea of dying together with him. This was not a momentary impulse, but a despair for life that came from the accumulation of hardships. As her husband, you have a responsibility to help her out of this shadow and let her see the meaning of life again. However, I don't care whether you get a divorce or not. If you can't win her back, it's your own fault for staying single."
Liang Yizhi sighed inwardly, pursed his lips, and said, "Yes, Teacher Shen."
Shen Jingxiu frowned. "Still calling me Teacher Shen?"
Liang Yizhi lowered his head and changed his words, saying, "Dad, please take care of yourself."
Shen Jingxiu was very satisfied with this respectful "father" attire.
"Did you give her your salary card?"
"It's paid."
“Very good, I’ll hand mine over to your mother-in-law as well. Um… the bride price can’t be less, we’ll make up for it later. Whatever you give, I’ll give as dowry, and she can manage it all.”
Liang Yizhi obediently replied, "Yes."
"Go out."
A barely perceptible smile finally appeared on Shen Jingxiu's lips as he looked away.
Liang Yizhi walked out of the room.
There were only guards outside the door, but Ji Ying was nowhere to be seen.
"Where are they?" he asked.
"Madam didn't want to wait for you, so she asked me to arrange a car and left first. She said... don't call her unless you're going to the Civil Affairs Bureau."
