Chapter 4 The Chicken That Doesn't Lay Eggs
When I dialed back, the call could not be connected.
Lu Yanchuan recalled her furtive voice from before.
"Find out where she is now."
Shen Li is not in Jiangcheng at this moment.
There was an exhibition of works by the master Zhong Shaoyuan in Los Angeles, and Shen Li arrived early.
She stood not far away, wearing a mask, watching Mr. Zhong being interviewed by reporters in front of the main artwork.
The spirit of Professor Zhong was almost the same as it was five years ago when he angrily criticized her for wasting her talent and ability.
Shen Li lowered her eyes and smiled.
People with short tempers never seem to grow old.
"Why don't you go take a look?" A tall, imposing man stood next to Shen Li and asked in a low voice.
Shen Li turned her gaze and saw the man's gentle and handsome face. He looked familiar, but she couldn't remember where she had seen him before.
She shook her head and said, "No, I'll visit him again next time with my work."
Shen Li turned and left the exhibition.
The gentle and handsome man stepped forward.
"Grandpa, I think I just saw that apprentice you've been thinking about."
Zhong Shaoyuan had just finished an interview when he heard this, and his face darkened. "Who's thinking about her?!"
"If you weren't thinking about me, you would know who I'm talking about as soon as I mention it," the young man said with a smile.
Old Zhong's face darkened. After a moment of silence, he asked in a low voice, "She really came?"
"You're here! I said I'd come back to see you next time with my work."
"snort!"
The old man snorted, but his previously somber and tense expression relaxed considerably.
On the way back to Jiangcheng, Shen Li thought it over and realized that Qu Xiang was right; she should indeed reconsider her future.
However, before that, she needs to resolve the issues between herself and Lu Yanchuan.
The next day, Shen Li got up very early and changed into a beautiful yet formal outfit.
After putting on delicate, light makeup, and seeing that it was almost time, she prepared to head to the Civil Affairs Bureau.
Unexpectedly, they ran into Lu Yanchuan's mother, Zhu Qinghui, in the parking lot.
Lu's mother had a stern and serious expression. When she saw Shen Li, her brows immediately furrowed. "It's good that you're here. It saves me the trouble of going upstairs to find you."
Shen Li was taken aback. "Uh... Mom, why are you here?"
"I learned that the man surnamed Song has returned."
Mrs. Lu looked Shen Li up and down, her voice indifferent, "As soon as she came back, you were kicked out of the villa? You're really spineless. Come with me."
Shen Li frowned. "I have other things to do." She looked into Lu's mother's eyes. "Lu Yanchuan is waiting for me at the Civil Affairs Bureau."
The meaning of her words was quite clear: she wanted to divorce Lu Yanchuan.
Lu's mother sneered, "Do you think marriage is a game? Get in the car with me."
Shen Li stood still, not leaving out of politeness to her elders.
But Zhu Qinghui was not so polite. She calmly instructed the person next to her, "Please 'invite' her into the car."
Two burly men in black suits walked towards Shen Li from the left and right.
"Madam, please get in the car. Don't make things difficult for us."
Shen Li bit her lip and got into the car.
She didn't know where Lu's mother wanted to take her, and just kept looking at her watch, hoping not to delay the time she had arranged to meet Lu Yanchuan.
The car drove to a place that looked like a resort villa hotel.
The car stopped in front of a building, and Shen Li then realized that this was not the lobby of the resort hotel.
It is, in fact, a high-end private medical center.
Upon entering, even more clues were revealed in the content displayed on the LED screens on the walls.
The words "Assisted Reproductive Medicine Center" pierced Shen Li's eyes like needles.
Shen Li stopped in her tracks. "Why did you bring me here?"
Lu's mother turned to look at her, "What else could we be here for? Of course, we're here to check you out and see if you have any problems."
"Otherwise, how come you haven't gotten pregnant after five years of marriage?"
Mother Lu sneered, "If you ask me, it's because your womb is too uncooperative. You haven't been able to give Yanchuan a child, so you can't control his heart."
"If you're a hen that doesn't lay eggs, you should get it treated as soon as possible. These days, technology is so advanced, there's no shame in doing IVF."
As she listened to Lu's mother's words, Shen Li clenched her fists tightly.
Before she could speak, a gentle-looking female doctor came up.
Having witnessed many such scenes, the female doctor was very empathetic to the plight of women.
He said gently, "Please don't get excited, it doesn't necessarily mean we have to do IVF."
"Let's do some basic checks to see what's going on. Sometimes it's not necessarily the woman's problem; the man could also be at fault..."
Before the doctor could finish speaking, Lu's mother sneered, "What could possibly be wrong with my son? You should give her a proper checkup!"
The doctor sighed softly, "Then please go out and wait. I'll do some tests on her."
Zhu Qinghui gave Shen Li a cold look and left the consultation room.
"Pull one pant leg down and lie down here. I'm going to do a routine gynecological exam, then draw blood to check your hormone levels, and then have a transvaginal ultrasound later..."
Shen Li stood aside without moving. "Doctor, I can't do it."
The doctor was puzzled, "Can't it be done?"
"Yes, because..."
A moment later, the door to the examination room opened.
Lu's mother walked in. "Are you done?"
"Today I showed respect to my elders, but please don't come to me with things like this again in the future." Shen Li looked at Lu's mother. "I'm leaving now."
Mrs. Lu was stunned for a moment, then her face turned angry. "Leave? The examination isn't finished yet, why are you leaving!"
"You still look like you've been wronged? I'm doing this for your own good! If you can get pregnant and have a child, Yanchuan won't want to divorce you! He won't abandon you!"
Zhu Qinghui just couldn't understand it; she couldn't get pregnant, and Lu Yanchuan was already considering divorcing her.
What's with all this self-righteous airs?!
Shen Li took a deep breath. "Mom, this is probably the last time I'll call you that."
"First of all, I have no problems. Why don't you take Lu Yanchuan for a check-up?"
"Secondly, it wasn't Lu Yanchuan who wanted a divorce; I was the one who initiated it. So I won't, and don't intend to, do what you said—get pregnant and have a child to control a man!"
"Lu Yanchuan is an adult; he should be able to control himself!"
After saying this, Shen Li didn't care how ugly Lu's mother's expression was, and quickly left the clinic with her bag.
Mrs. Lu's face turned pale. She took a deep breath and turned to ask the doctor, "What did you find during your examination that made her so angry and embarrassed?"
The doctor said awkwardly, "I can't do any tests on her."
"What? Why!" Lu's mother demanded.
“I cannot perform any invasive gynecological examination on someone who has never had sexual experience. Not only can I not do it, but no doctor would do it.”
"She has never had sexual intercourse..." At first, Lu's mother did not understand what the doctor meant.
As she mumbled this part, she suddenly realized what she had said, and her eyes widened in shock!
Does this mean that Shen Li and Yan Chuan have never shared a room?
How is that possible? They've been married for five years!
