When Mingyi returned from the restroom, he saw that Sang Yuwan looked somewhat dazed, so he went over to her.
"Sister Wan, what's this?"
Sang Yuwan's heart tightened, and she snapped back to reality. Forcing herself to remain calm, she gave a slight smile and said, "It's nothing."
Seeing that she was unwilling to talk, Ming did not press her further.
He glanced at the unconscious Mingmei and cautiously spoke, "Sister Wan, Fourth Sister is a public figure after all. If someone with malicious intent takes a picture of her like this and uploads it online, wouldn't that be inappropriate?"
Sang Yuwan's lips tightened slightly, her tone cold, "She kept vigil for her cousin, and cried herself unconscious. People will only say it's a deep sibling bond, what's wrong with that?"
Ming Yi was taken aback, his lips drooped slightly, and he dared not utter another sound.
Sang Yuwan's eyes darkened, and she spoke again, "Mingyi, after your brother's funeral is over, go and tell President Rong that you're resigning."
Mingyi's expression froze, her gaze filled with confusion. "Sister Wan, I was doing just fine, why would I want to quit?"
A complex look flashed across Sang Yuwan's eyes. "Don't ask why, just do as I say."
Mingyi tried to insist, "Sister Wan, is there something I did wrong?"
Sang Yuwan's brows furrowed slightly, her pretty face covered with a layer of frost. The emotion in her eyes was neither anger nor sadness, but a complex emotion that was hard to describe, flowing slowly in silence.
She paused for a few seconds, then slowly said, "You did very well."
"Then why..." Mingyi really didn't want to resign, and couldn't help but raise his voice.
Looking at Ming Xiao's portrait, Sang Yuwan said softly, "Ming Yi, you must remember. You are a member of the Ming family."
Mingyi's heart skipped a beat, and his eyes widened suddenly. "Sister Wan, you mean... Second Brother, he..."
Sang Yuwan's heart clenched painfully, a surge of bitterness welled up in her chest, and her throat tightened instantly.
Mingyi's face turned deathly pale. He turned his gaze to the unconscious Mingmei, his eyebrows furrowing in a frown.
He strode over and pinched her arm hard. "Don't sleep."
Mingmei suddenly woke up with a start, pulling at the whip marks on her back, wincing in pain, and cursing in a hoarse voice, "Mingyi, what are you doing?"
Mingyi's chest heaved violently. "Where did Second Brother go?"
Mingmei's heart tightened, and her hands unconsciously twisted together, her fingertips turning white from the force. She took a deep breath, her eyelashes trembling slightly, "I don't know."
Mingyi gritted his teeth, "You're the one who called Second Brother away, and you actually say you didn't know?"
"I..." Mingmei was already feeling guilty, and upon hearing this, her heart pounded like a drum, each beat accompanied by a throbbing in her chest, and even her breathing seemed to become rapid and unsteady.
Seeing this, Ming became even angrier. He grabbed her collar and asked in a low voice, "Will you talk or not? I'll talk about what I did today..."
Sang Yuwan, who had been observing coldly, spoke up indifferently, "Mingyi."
Upon hearing the sound, Mingmei involuntarily shivered. She swallowed hard, bit her lip, and looked over.
Mingyi slowly loosened his grip, his face darkening. "If anything happens to Second Brother, I will personally beat you to death."
Upon hearing this, Sang Yuwan coldly reprimanded, "Mingyi, you are a top law student. When did you learn to solve problems with violence?"
Ming choked, "I..."
Fine beads of sweat glistened on Mingmei's forehead under the candlelight. She subconsciously raised her hand to wipe them away, but it was only a futile attempt to erase the tension emanating from within.
The air in the mourning hall suddenly became still.
Time passed by, second by second, as if it were being stretched out infinitely.
A servant came over and asked Sang Yuwan, "Miss Wan, Madam has had someone prepare a late-night snack for you. Shall we bring it to you now?"
Sang Yuwan was preoccupied with worries and couldn't eat anything.
She glanced at Mingmei, whose face was pale, and said coldly, "Bring it to the Fourth Miss."
The servant replied respectfully, "Yes."
Ming frowned upon hearing this, a hint of resentment in his eyes, "It would be better if she starved to death."
A knot formed between Mingyi's brows, and beneath her furrowed brows, her eyes flickered with a complex mix of resentment and anger. "Mingyi, what's your attitude?"
Mingyi glared at her fiercely and said irritably, "What kind of attitude do I need towards someone like you?"
Her bright eyes suddenly turned sharp as knives, her once gentle face was now tense, and the corners of her mouth turned down slightly, revealing an undeniable anger.
"Mingyi, I tolerated Sang Yuwan's actions. But don't talk to me like that."
Mingyi retorted angrily, "Mingmei, let me tell you. Even if Second Uncle were still alive, I would still have the same attitude in front of him."
The surrounding air seemed to freeze, and even time seemed to slow down.
"Enough!" Sang Yuwan's gaze darkened, and she reprimanded coldly. Although her voice did not rise, it carried an undeniable authority.
Mingyi's lips tightened, and he silently stepped aside.
Mingmei glared at him resentfully and struggled to her feet.
The wound on his back was reopening, and blood seeped out intermittently. A piercing pain spread throughout his limbs and bones.
She wanted to scold Sang Yuwan, but she was too afraid to do so.
Mingmei knew that if she were to provoke Sang Yuwan again, she would be courting death.
She looked at Sang Yuwan, who was sitting in a rattan chair holding a wooden box, and felt a surge of intense emotions.
Clearly, she is the true daughter of the Ming family.
The Mingyu family, however, preferred the twilight years.
Apart from Lan Xiya, Mingyu and the others have no blood relation to her whatsoever.
But they just doted on her.
Even after what happened six years ago, she still holds a very important place in Mingyu's heart.
A servant brought over a bowl of vegetarian wontons. "Fourth Miss."
Mingmei glanced at it and involuntarily swallowed.
She was actually quite hungry.
The two went to a small rest room next to the mourning hall.
Mingyi muttered irritably, "Giving it to her is worse than feeding it to a dog."
Sang Yuwan gave him a cold look.
He fell silent instantly.
-
Sang Yu sat in the mourning hall until three o'clock in the morning, her eyelids starting to droop incessantly.
Xiansi quickly walked to her side and whispered in her ear, "Madam, Minglang is on the phone."
Sang Yuwan instantly snapped out of her daze. She sat up straight and said coldly, "Tell me the results."
Xian Si whispered, "Young Master Ming has been injured."
Sang Yuwan's heart raced, her chest heaving slightly. "Is it serious?"
Xian Si's expression was grave. "Left shoulder, bullet through."
Sang Yuwan's body stiffened.
At that moment, all the surrounding sounds seemed to disappear, leaving only the rapid heartbeat and heavy breathing. Time seemed to freeze, immersing one in an indescribable silence.
Xian Si hurriedly added, "Fortunately, his life is no longer in danger."
Sang Yuwan gripped the box in her arms and said, "This matter must never be known to anyone else."
Xian Si pursed her lips. "Ming Lang has already signed a confidentiality agreement with the medical staff who treated him."
