The medical seminar venue was elegantly and solemnly decorated. Soft lighting cast a faint glow on the polished marble floor. The venue was bustling with medical elites from around the world, dressed in refined attire. Some were chatting in low voices, while others were browsing through materials. A professional and serious atmosphere permeated the air.
Jiang Zhi wore a simple white dress, its hem swaying gently with her steps. Her long hair casually draped over her shoulders, and her delicate makeup accentuated her naturally fresh demeanor. She clutched seminar materials, her gaze focused and determined as she engaged in a lively discussion with several colleagues on the latest medical research findings. Each point she articulated was coherent and clear, her passion for medicine and professionalism on full display.
Shen Qingchen, meanwhile, wore a well-tailored black suit that accentuated his tall figure. His hair was meticulously coiffed, and a complex expression lingered in his deep eyes. He stood alone in a corner of the venue, seemingly casually clutching a glass of champagne, his gaze fixed on Jiang Zhi. People milled around him, occasionally attempting to strike up a conversation, but he merely nodded politely, his mind completely unconcerned with the small talk.
When Jiang Zhi's gaze inadvertently swept in the direction of Shen Qingchen, their eyes met. Time seemed to freeze at this moment, and the surrounding noise seemed to gradually fade away, leaving only their gazes fixed on each other. Shen Qingchen's heart trembled suddenly. He saw the complex emotions that flashed across Jiang Zhi's eyes: surprise, indifference, and a hint of sadness that he could not understand. He subconsciously wanted to step forward, but his feet seemed to be nailed to the ground, unable to move.
Jiang Zhi quickly looked away, as if it had just been a casual exchange of glances. She continued chatting with her companions, her face regaining its focus, but only she knew the turmoil that had washed over her heart in that moment. Every moment she had spent with Shen Qingchen replayed in her mind like a movie, those sweet memories intertwined with the painful betrayal, leaving her heart filled with contradictions.
Shen Qingchen took a deep breath and tried to calm himself down. He knew that this was a rare opportunity and he couldn't let Jiang Zhi slip away from him again. He slowly took a step and walked towards Jiang Zhi. With every step, he could feel his heartbeat speeding up and sweat seeping out of his palms.
“Jiang Zhi…” Shen Qingchen finally walked to Jiang Zhi’s side, his voice a little hoarse, with a hint of nervousness and anticipation.
Jiang Zhi frowned slightly and turned to look at Shen Qingchen. There was no enthusiasm in her eyes. She just nodded politely and said, "Mr. Shen." She deliberately used the title "Mr. Shen", as if building a cold wall between the two of them.
Shen Qingchen felt a pang of pain in his heart. He knew what this name meant. But he still tried to force a smile and said, "Long time no see. How are you...recently?"
"It's fine, thank you for your concern." Jiang Zhi's answer was concise and cold. She didn't want to have too much entanglement with Shen Qingchen on this occasion. She tried to shift her attention back to the discussion with her peers, but Shen Qingchen's presence made her a little uneasy.
Everyone around them sensed the subtle atmosphere between them, and the originally heated discussion gradually died down. Everyone looked at the former lovers with curiosity, wondering what had happened between them.
Shen Qingchen looked at Jiang Zhi's back. Her indifferent attitude made his heart seem to be tightly grasped by an invisible hand. He opened his mouth, wanting to say something to break the awkward silence, but found that his throat seemed to be choked by something and he couldn't say anything.
He recalled the wonderful times they had shared. On that sunny afternoon, they had strolled hand in hand along the beach, the breeze caressing their faces, Jiang Zhi's smile brighter than the sun. He also remembered them busying themselves in the kitchen preparing dinner, playing and laughing, their laughter echoing through the room. Those memories were so clear, yet so distant. Now, they felt like strangers.
"Jiang Zhi, I... I know I hurt you before, and I really regret it." Shen Qingchen finally mustered up the courage to speak. His voice was not loud, but it was particularly clear in this slightly quiet atmosphere.
Jiang Zhi's body stiffened slightly, and she stopped what she was doing, but she didn't look back. The resolute look in Shen Qingchen's eyes when she filed for divorce resurfaced in her mind, and the pain in her heart surged like a tide. "What's the point of saying this now?" she said coldly.
"I know that whatever I say now may seem pale, but I just want you to know that I have been reflecting on my mistakes. I hope you can give me a chance to make up for the harm I have caused you." Shen Qingchen's eyes were full of sincerity and pleading.
Jiang Zhi slowly turned around and looked at Shen Qingchen. A hint of anger flashed in her eyes: "Make amends? Do you think you can make amends? Do you know how painful it has been for me all along? Your decision back then was like a knife, piercing my heart fiercely. Those wounds are still bleeding."
Shen Qingchen lowered his head. He couldn't refute Jiang Zhi's words. He knew that his mistake was unforgivable, but he still didn't want to give up. "I know I was wrong, and I don't expect you to forgive me right away. But I will use my actions to prove that I really love you and I want to start over with you."
"Hmph, start over? Do you think we can go back to the past?" Jiang Zhi sneered, "Once something happens, there's no going back."
