Jiang Zhi stood by the window of the room that had once been filled with warmth and laughter, now a lonely place, gazing out at the bustling yet unfamiliar city. Sunlight streamed through the glass, yet it couldn't dispel the gloom lingering within her. Not long ago, she and Shen Qingchen had signed their divorce papers. The stroke of the pen across the paper seemed to tear her heart into countless pieces, each one dripping with blood, each one carrying memories and pain from the past.
She still remembered their first encounter, a spring afternoon, cherry blossoms falling like snow. She was hurriedly running through the hospital corridors, attending to an urgent case, when he, with a calm and graceful demeanor, appeared in her sight. At that moment, time seemed to freeze, their eyes meeting, and it felt as if an electric current ran through them. In the days that followed, they gradually grew closer, their love blooming like a flower, exuding an enchanting fragrance. They strolled along the beach, listening to the crash of the waves, sharing their dreams and aspirations; they dined together by candlelight, their eyes filled with love that needed no words.
However, fate, like a ruthless blade, severed all this beauty. Now, she was left alone, facing this empty room and this shattered life. But Jiang Zhi knew she couldn't let herself sink into despair. She took a deep breath, slowly burying the pain deep within her heart, like planting a thorny seed, covering it with a strong will, preventing it from growing wildly. She knew she had more important things to do: investigate the annihilation of Tang Junxi's family and the cause of Shen Qingchen's father's death.
Jiang Zhi began to sort out the connections she had accumulated over the years in the city. She remembered her former mentor in medical school, a highly respected and knowledgeable professor who had extensive connections in the medical community and might be able to provide some useful clues. She immediately called her mentor and heard a familiar and friendly voice on the other end of the line. Jiang Zhi briefly explained her purpose. The mentor was silent for a moment, then told her that he knew an old friend who was quite prestigious in the police force and might be able to find clues in some old police case files. A glimmer of hope surged in Jiang Zhi's heart. After gratefully thanking her mentor, she immediately went to contact the police officer.
With the help of a friend in the police force, Jiang Zhi gained access to the archives to review relevant materials. The room, lined with shelves of files, was filled with the scent of aged papers, as if each document held a piece of forgotten history. Jiang Zhi meticulously flipped through the stacks, meticulously examining every detail. Her brow furrowed, then relaxed. The densely packed text and blurry photos seemed like a mysterious code, waiting to be deciphered. Finally, she discovered something odd in a seemingly unassuming report. The report mentioned that before the Tang Junxi family's misfortune, mysterious individuals had been frequently sighted near their business. Their identities were unknown, and their behavior was highly suspicious. Similar activity had also occurred around the time of Shen Qingchen's father's misfortune. These mysterious individuals appeared to be connected to an organization codenamed "Shadow," but detailed information about this organization remained shrouded in mystery.
Jiang Zhi knew that this alone was far from enough. With her keen insight, she began to pay attention to everything around her. She walked through the streets and alleys, observing the people around her. She found that some people were always peeping in the dark, and their eyes revealed an unusual indifference and vigilance. Jiang Zhi deliberately appeared in some public places, trying to lure out those suspicious people. Once, she sat down in a cafe, seemingly drinking coffee leisurely, but in fact paying attention to the movements around her. Sure enough, after a while, a man in a black suit walked into the cafe. His eyes stayed on Jiang Zhi for a moment, and then he pretended to sit in the corner as if nothing had happened. Jiang Zhi's heart moved, and she deliberately got up and left the cafe, then slowed down on the nearby street. The man also followed out, keeping a distance, but always staring at her closely.
Jiang Zhi didn't panic. She calmly considered her strategy. She walked into a busy commercial street, where the crowds were bustling. She weaved through the crowds, using them as cover to try to shake off the man. Suddenly, she turned into a narrow alley. The man hesitated, then followed her in. The moment he entered the alley, Jiang Zhi turned abruptly and looked him in the eye.
"Why are you following me?" Jiang Zhi's voice was cold and firm.
The man was stunned for a moment, then sneered: "You're meddling too much, Jiang Zhi. There are some things you shouldn't interfere with."
"Who are you? Are you related to the affairs of Tang Junxi's family?" Jiang Zhi pressed on.
The man did not answer. He suddenly pulled out a dagger from his arms and stabbed at Jiang Zhi. Jiang Zhi was prepared. She dodged to the side and easily avoided the attack. She took advantage of the situation and kicked the man's wrist. The dagger fell to the ground with a clang. The man felt pain. He looked at Jiang Zhi viciously, then turned around and tried to escape. How could Jiang Zhi let him go so easily? She rushed forward, grabbed the man's shoulder and twisted it hard. The man was forced to turn around. Jiang Zhi's eyes were like a sharp blade, as if to pierce his soul.
"Tell me! What are you hiding?" Jiang Zhi roared.
A trace of fear crossed the man's face, but he kept his mouth shut, refusing to utter a single word. Jiang Zhi knew she wouldn't be able to get any more information from him for a while. She let go of him, and the man, as if granted amnesty, fled the alley in a panic.
