13. Chapter 13 Help is coming

Chapter 13 Help is coming

The arrow was carried by the wind, and the sharp tip of the arrow barely brushed past Wei Shuyi's shoulder and pierced into the trunk of the big tree behind him.

"Protect the adults!"

Before Chang Suining spoke, Changji had already drawn his sword.

Wei Shuyi came to his senses, grabbed Chang Suining's arm, put her under the protection of the guards, and pulled her back.

Chang Suining looked towards the place where the cold arrow had just come from - on the other side of the river, several dark shadows had leaped out of the woods. They flew across the river with knives in their hands, and water droplets splashed, reflecting the oppressive chill in the early spring evening.

Those dark shadows were swift and murderous, but after all, there were only a few of them and they didn't seem to be scary.

"Don't be careless—" Chang Suining looked towards the deep and dense forest: "There are far more people coming."

Since the troops chose to rest here, they must have explored the vicinity in advance. In order to hide their tracks, the enemy could not have too many people lurking nearby. Several experts in archery and crossbows went ahead to explore the way and wait for an opportunity to fight. The real main force has not yet appeared.

As she finished speaking, a sharp whistle was heard in the forest, startling the birds and causing the accumulated rain in the forest to fall like needles.

Chang Suining took out a dagger and held it in his hand.

Wei Shuyi was a little surprised: "?"

A Che ran towards Chang Suining and took out a kitchen knife from his arms.

Wei Shuyi: “???”

At this moment, as the men in black were fighting with the guards, the left arm of one of the men in black was cut off, with blood and flesh flying everywhere.

Wei Shuyi pulled Chang Suining over and asked her to stand behind him, blocking the bloody scene. He then ordered Changji, "Take someone to escort her to the carriage and leave first."

"No." Chang Suining rejected it quickly, "Their target is not me, and I can protect myself. There is no need to disperse my manpower and weaken my chances of winning. This is a bad idea and cannot be used. Or maybe we can send someone to the city on a fast horse to pass on a message for help, which is a practical move."

Wei Shuyi turned his head slightly to look at her, but nodded: "Okay, let's go together after we solve this problem."

As soon as the voice fell, dark shadows came running towards them, appearing from different directions, some coming towards them, some blocking their retreat, and approaching with a surrounding force. There were at least nearly a hundred of them.

The purpose of this meticulously planned assassination couldn't be more obvious.

Kill the imperial envoy and intercept the prison van.

The numbers of men on both sides were equal, the sound of fighting was deafening, the horses were neighing in fear, and the shallow stream had been dyed red.

With a loud "clang", the prison van used to transport Zhao Fu was torn into pieces by the knives of two men in black.

“Stop them!”

A guard shouted.

The next moment, a man in black raised his knife again - the man in prison clothes was not rescued, but was beheaded on the spot.

The original purpose of this operation was not to intercept people, but to silence them!

The men in black had already succeeded, but they had no intention of retreating. The leader raised his hand and said coldly, "Take Uncle Wei's head! Leave no one alive!"

Wei Shuyi, who had been "predestined to be beheaded", shook his head and sighed: "I told you, this imperial envoy sounds respectable, but it is clearly a job that involves risking one's life."

Chang Suining turned his head and saw a face full of helpless complaints.

This is an assassination, right? Chang Suining looked at the swordfighting in all directions with a mood of "not sure, let's wait and see" - is Wei Shuyi stupid, or does he have other support? The people in the prison car were dead, and the men in black surrounded Wei Shuyi.

They attacked ruthlessly, without regard for rules or methods, just to take people's lives. Some people approached with knives, and there were archers who pulled bows and crossbows in the dark. They attacked at once, and sharp arrows whizzed towards them.

Changji waved his sword and tried to block the arrows, while a group of guards protected Wei Shuyi and retreated into the forest.

Chang Suining had no idea what Wei Shuyi was up to, so she simply snatched the kitchen knife from A'che, who was trembling with nervousness, and thought that if things didn't work out, she might as well take the opportunity to slip away - she had finally gotten her life back, and she couldn't just follow this man and end up like that without knowing why!

She was not afraid of death, but this way of dying was too cowardly and confusing. It was not suitable for her and she didn't like it.

Chang Suining was just about to take A Che and retreat deep into the forest, until they were away from Wei Shuyi, the living target. However, at this moment, he suddenly felt a cold murderous intent coming from above his head.

Although she had no strength left, the awareness of danger that was ingrained into her bones was still there - it was not a talent, but a survival instinct that she had accumulated after experiencing countless life-and-death situations.

In an instant, she suddenly raised her eyes, and her sight was almost accurately locked on the man in black hiding among the branches and leaves of the big tree.

The man in black with the bow in his hand thought he was hiding very well, but he was caught off guard by a pair of dark and cold eyes. After a moment of surprise, he put the arrow on the string even faster.

There were still sounds of fighting all around, and all this happened in a flash, and had not yet attracted the attention of a third person.

Chang Suining dropped the kitchen knife in his hand and rushed towards Wei Shuyi with great force. The two of them fell heavily to the ground and rolled down the slope in the forest.

Almost at the same moment, the arrow sank deeply into the mud where Wei Shuyi had just stood.

"My dear!"

"There are ambushes in the forest, be careful!"

"Protect my lord!"

Although Wei Shuyi was a civil official in the Ministry of Personnel, he was not a weak scholar who could not even tie a chicken. He had practiced martial arts since he was young. Although he could not be said to be extraordinary, he had the strength of a young man. During the rolling process, he took the initiative and protected Chang Suining's head with his arms, while his back hit the tree heavily.

When he hissed softly, Chang Suining had already climbed up and sat up, moving as fast as a rabbit.

Wei Shuyi endured the pain and sat up, supporting himself with his hands at his sides, looking up at her.

"It seems like someone is coming again—" The girl listened attentively and recognized the sound of horse hooves. She became a little impatient and asked him, "Wei Shuyi, do you have any way to retreat?"

If he continues to make trouble, she will really not care about him anymore!

Even for his mother's sake, it wouldn't work! She had just died once, and she didn't want to die again - it would be so pathetic to have her die so quickly, and it would have wasted the good intentions of the King of Hell to give her food at the risk of losing his job.

"Yes." Seeing her impatience, Wei Shuyi actually smiled and nodded, saying, "There is a way out."

As he spoke, he looked towards the outside of the forest and said, "Look, help is coming."

Chang Suining followed his gaze and saw that was the direction where the sound of horse hooves came from.

Changji stepped forward and helped Wei Shuyi.

The people who were lying in ambush in the forest had been dealt with. Wei Shuyi brushed off the grass debris on his sleeves and said, "Let's go and meet our old friend."

Chang Suining looked at the men and horses that were looming in the twilight. His heart beat faster, and he seemed to have received some guidance, and walked slowly forward.

The person who came was a friend, not an enemy, and quickly turned the situation around.

"Retreat quickly!" Seeing that the situation was not good, the men in black wanted to retreat.

The next moment, the black-clad man in the lead suddenly paused and froze in place. He lowered his head with difficulty and saw a bloody hole in his chest, with blood gushing out.

He didn't even see what pierced his body.

Chang Suining saw it clearly - the sharp arrow just now came as fast as lightning, piercing through the human flesh and blood body as easily as passing through a piece of window paper without any obstruction.

Her eyes looked towards the person who shot the arrow.

The sunset glow under the interweaving of cloudy and sunny skies is always particularly gorgeous, but unfortunately before I had time to enjoy it, only the last ray of it remained, about to disappear into the horizon.

Before the last ray of sunset disappeared, someone drove a horse slowly over. The horse was shiny black and the man sitting on the horse was also wearing black armor. He held the reins in one hand and a bow in the other, and his whole body was filled with a murderous and fierce aura.

Chang Suining's eyes fell on the longbow in his hand.

If she was not mistaken, this bow should be...

"General Cui, it's been a long time since we last met." Wei Shuyi spoke, interrupting Chang Suining's thoughts.

General Cui?

This is Cui Jing, who is now in charge of the Xuan Ce Army? Chang Suining raised his eyes and subconsciously looked at the man's face.
