Chapter 1: Awakening

"It hurts, it hurts, it fucking hurts!" Song Yan sat up, clutching her head. She opened her eyes to find herself lying on the door panel. Several men and women were standing in the room. Closest to her was a girl dressed like an eighteen or nineteen-year-old student, kneeling before Song Yan, her face streaked with tears. She, like the others, was staring blankly at her.

“No way! She was clearly dead just now.” A woman in her thirties, wearing a plaid shirt, pointed at Song Yan and said.

"You're talking nonsense. I told you Song Yan had fainted, and look at her now, she's perfectly fine!" The girl was still kneeling beside Song Yan. "Does your head hurt a lot?" The girl turned her head and shouted at a young man, "Song Yan's head is covered in blood, aren't you going to get a doctor to take a look?"

Song Yan clutched her head. Not only did her injured skin ache, but the flood of memories from the original owner of the body made her head throb. Song Yan knew she had transmigrated into a book. She wasn't in a hurry to think about how she came to be; what she needed to think about was how to survive.

It hurts, it hurts so much…

Song Yan finally fainted from the pain. When Song Yan woke up again, she was still lying on the door panel. Only the girl who had cried the loudest earlier remained in the room; her name was Jiang Xiaoxiao. The girl sat in a corner of the door panel, hugging her knees and resting her head on them. The original owner of this body was named Song Yan, a pure, love-struck fool; she was a supporting character in the male antagonist's story. Song Yan appeared in two chapters in the original book before disappearing from the story. Now, the original owner had disappeared, and Song Yan had come to take over.

Song Yan survived in Song Yan's body, but whether she could continue living was uncertain. This novel tells the story of educated youth sent to the countryside. The female supporting character's role in the story isn't prominent, but the original owner's memories are abundant. The original owner, Song Yan, was born into a working-class family; she was her parents' only daughter. Her grandmother always said her father had no heir and pressured her to divorce her parents, but her father refused. Her grandmother then subjected her and her mother to all sorts of hardships. The young girl was deeply troubled, but her childhood friend He Jianian, a few years older than her, often comforted and encouraged her, becoming a ray of sunshine in her heart.

The girl is 17 years old this year, and her childhood sweetheart, He Jianian, is a sent-down youth. Song Yan actively applied to come to Qingshan Brigade with him. This way, Song Yan can stay with her childhood sweetheart and escape the home she hates.

Going to the countryside wouldn't have been so bad if it had just been a simple, down-to-earth life and labor. But He Jianian had never done farm work before and couldn't handle the hardship. He noticed that the brigade leader's daughter treated him very differently, so He Jianian wanted to get rid of Song Yan, who was clinging to him. Song Yan, that clueless girl with only a lovestruck mind, didn't notice anything and believed everything He Jianian said.

Wei Aiguo, a young man from the village, lost his elder brother, Wei Aijun, while protecting the collective property of the brigade. His wife, who was already full-term and nearing delivery, went into labor upon hearing the tragic news, gave birth to twins, and then died from postpartum hemorrhage. Now, the Wei family consists of his elderly mother, two four-year-old children, and Wei Aiguo himself—four people in total. His new wife isn't a stepmother, but it's practically the same, especially with two children to care for. Therefore, it's not easy for Wei Aiguo to find a wife. At 22, he's still unmarried, considered an older bachelor in the countryside. Wei Aiguo wants to join the army. Everyone is vying for a spot. Wei Aiguo has good qualifications, and his brother died protecting collective property, so the brigade leader, Wu Changsheng, said he could have a conscription spot this year. His mother also agrees to her son joining the army, but on the condition that he must get married before he can leave. Wei's mother has been asking around the village to find a wife for her son. Wei Aiguo already struggled to find a wife, and now he wants to join the army—it's clear he's only doing this to find a wife to take care of his mother and two children. Two months of this have passed without any progress. Aunt Wei went to see the brigade leader again. Her eldest son had died protecting the brigade's grain, and now her second son was going to join the army. The brigade leader should take care of her family. Aunt Wei begged the brigade leader for a promise: he would give Wei Aiguo's wife an easy job—gathering grass for the cattle. Gathering grass for the cattle only paid five work points a day, but it was much easier than working in the fields.

At this point, He Jianian had begun to intentionally distance himself from Song Yan. The naive Song Yan was completely oblivious; she was distressed by the flea bites covering her body and on the verge of tears from the blisters on her hands. Food was scarce at the educated youth settlement, and they only ate about 70% full each day. Always feeling hungry, Song Yan had no energy to work and was always the last one to finish, dragging everyone down. So Song Yan suffered terribly every day. He Jianian, on the other hand, acted as if he was extremely distressed. This scoundrel began to intentionally advise Song Yan to think about a way out. He said that if things continued like this, Song Yan would eventually die on this land.

Although Wei Aiguo's family wasn't well-off, he was a local and wouldn't be bullied. How could Song Yan agree to that? The naive girl vowed she could endure any hardship for He Jianian. The girl's memories were filled with gratitude for her childhood sweetheart's consideration for her, while Song Yan recalled only Song Jianian's insincerity.

Just as news spread that Aunt Wei had found an easy job for her future daughter-in-law, Song Yan fell ill. He Jianian showered her with more sweet talk, saying Song Yan was a good girl and that she would always be in his heart. He claimed Song Yan was already frail, and now, with her illness, working in the fields would surely kill her. He, He Jianian, couldn't protect the one he loved, but he couldn't selfishly sacrifice her life for love. The blinded Song Yan was utterly foolish. If she were truly that ill, she could apply to return to the city! Marriage wasn't the only option! She completely listened to He Jianian, revealing her willingness to marry a local villager.

Song Yan was thin and petite, and always the last to start work. Aunt Wei wasn't particularly fond of her. However, there was simply no one to introduce a suitable girl; even people were coming to Wei Aiguo's door to introduce him to young widows. In desperation, Aunt Wei asked the women's director, Wang Wenjuan—the woman in the plaid top from tonight—to act as matchmaker and facilitate the marriage between Song Yan and Wei Aiguo.
