Chapter 19 Stone Mill

When Song Yan reappeared carrying grass, the villagers noticed a shovel tucked among it. She'd have to wave the shovel around occasionally; otherwise, how would they explain the trap?

When Song Yan married into the village, she became one of the villagers, unlike the educated youth. The villagers would approach her and ask, "Patriotic wife, why are you carrying a shovel?"

“I’m useful! What was that big courtyard in the west of the village used to be for, Aunt Cheng? I see it’s all overgrown with weeds in front of it!” Aunt Cheng is Cheng Yousuo’s aunt.

"That used to belong to the Wang family, all five of them hanged themselves." After saying this, Aunt Cheng looked around, afraid that others would hear. "His house was a brick and tile house, who wouldn't like it? Several families moved in. One family was the first to get sick, and two of them died. The other families also gradually got sick. Some people said that maybe the Wang family resented them for occupying someone else's house! They were so scared that they dared not live there anymore. After they moved out, they really did get better."

"This is terrifying." Song Yan felt a bit horrified. She definitely wouldn't have believed it before, but now that she's experienced all the bizarre things that happen when you transmigrate into a book, she can't say for sure that this is absolutely true.

"Of course! No matter how nice the big houses are, nobody dares to live there. There's even a big stone mill in the yard; people used to use it. But there were always strange noises, and everyone felt the yard was eerie, so nobody used it anymore."...

After exchanging a few more words with Aunt Cheng, Song Yan left. She was thinking about the stone mill Aunt Cheng had mentioned; with a stone mill, she could grind cornmeal.

After delivering hay to the cowshed, Song Yan didn't want to go back; the stone mill was tantalizing her. It wasn't yet time to finish work, and there weren't many people in the village, so Song Yan went to check on the big house.

The wormwood around the house was already waist-high. Song Yan carefully pushed open the gate, and the yard was also full of lush green wormwood. Among the wormwood was a large stone mill covered in moss! But Song Yan felt something was slightly out of place in the yard. Song Yan didn't mind; without hesitation, she stored the stone mill in her spatial storage and retreated…

Song Yan hummed a song while cooking; she had everything she needed!

"Second Aunt, you sang beautifully." Girls are always so thoughtful; she would always come in to check on Song Yan after playing for a while.

"Come on, I'll teach you to sing! Little bunny, open the door obediently..."

"Little bunny, open the door!" Wei An's voice was childlike and sweet, and Song Yan's heart melted.

"Hurry up and open it, I need to get in..."

Upon hearing this, Wei Ping also joined in the learning.

As soon as Wei Aiguo entered the house, he heard Wei Ping and Wei An singing together. After the two children finished singing, Song Yan applauded them.

"Second Uncle, did I sing well?"

"Me too, me too." Wei Ping and Wei An clung to Wei Aiguo's legs like two sandbags. Wei Aiguo slowly led them into the house.

The mother sat on the kang with a smile, "Come down quickly, your second uncle is tired." The two children obediently let go of her hands and followed Song Yan, grabbing chopsticks, a bowl, and so on.

His stomach rumbled, and Wei Aiguo first took a big gulp of corn porridge. He suddenly felt that living like this wouldn't be so bad.

When it was time for nap time, Wei An clung to Song Yan, refusing to let go, calling out, "Second Aunt, Second Aunt." Song Yan was powerless against the soft, childlike voice. Wei An pulled Song Yan onto the kang (heated brick bed) and pressed her down to lie down, the little one snuggling into her arms. Song Yan could only hold one child at a time, so Wei Ping, being sensible, didn't fight with his sister and lay down behind her. Feeling Wei Ping tugging at her clothes, Song Yan simply lay flat, saying, "Come on, come on, you two are both Second Aunt's." She then placed one child on each of her arms.

Aunt Wei was relieved; she could die with her eyes closed, and she could rest easy knowing her child was with Song Yan.

Wei Aiguo walked past the window and saw this scene. Why does Song Yan like children so much?

Song Yan is quite health-conscious and always wakes up after a half-hour nap at noon. Aunt Wei and the child were still asleep. Song Yan's consciousness entered the space and moved the stone mill to the spring to brush off the moss. This stone mill was huge; if it weren't for his mental power, Song Yan estimated that five or six people wouldn't be able to move it.

The pond is slowly expanding, and the biggest fish there weighs about eight or nine pounds. Catching such a big fish is a bit too abrupt; let's eat something else. I'll choose one around three pounds. Time to go fishing…

Sitting by the river, the gentle breeze was pleasant; life like this was good enough, but Song Yan knew it was temporary. Once Wei Aiguo developed feelings for Li Yuanzhao, he would be superfluous. It was 1974 now; the college entrance exam would resume in 1977. He would definitely take the exam, study traditional Chinese medicine, and then he could legitimately return to his old profession. If Wei Aiguo still couldn't escape the plot's arrangement, he could simply raise Wei Ping and Wei An himself. With his abilities, it wouldn't be a problem, and besides, there were resources in his spatial dimension; he and his children could live well…

"Patriotic sister-in-law! How many fish did you catch?" It was Chen Youfu, the youngest son of Aunt Wei and Cheng Yousuo's youngest brother. He was fourteen years old and worked with the adults, earning six work points. He was working nearby, and he swallowed hard as he looked at the four fish in the bucket. "I've tried fishing before, but I didn't catch anything."

“Not everyone can catch fish. Are you craving some? Call me 'Sister,' and when you finish work, you can walk past my house and take a few home to eat!” In Song Yan’s eyes, Cheng Youfu was still a child. Besides, Aunt Cheng was a kind person, and Song Yan was willing to give him some.

"Call me 'sister' and I'll take your fish. Didn't I get a great deal?" Cheng Youfu scratched his head sheepishly.

"You think it's just about calling me 'sister'? I'm going to be your sister for life," Song Yan said with a smile. Chen Youfu often visited Wei's family to see his mother; he was a cheerful and lively teenager.

"Okay, then you'll be my sister for life. Sister, you have to catch more fish for me to eat!" The boy was quite mischievous.
