If anything happens in someone's family, the whole village knows. The patriotic wife gave Cheng Youfu two fish, which made everyone incredibly envious. Even while working, some of the women were talking about it.
"Hey, look, isn't that a patriotic wife?" a woman working in the fields exclaimed.
"It's too far away, I can't see who it is!" someone said...
In the distance stood Song Yan, who had taken out a rabbit, intending to stew it that evening. The cowshed and her house were in completely opposite directions. If she delivered the hay first while carrying the rabbit, it would be like going around half the village. That would be too conspicuous. Song Yan placed the hay at the village entrance, delivered the rabbit home first, and then went to deliver the hay.
Cleaning up manure every day is a very heavy job. There are five cows and three horses in the cowshed. Old Han and his three partners do all the work of taking care of these animals. Old Zeng stepped forward and took the cow feed from him.
Song Yan took out some vegetable dumplings, and Old Han became a little anxious. "Didn't I tell you? I told you not to bring any more food."
"Don't worry, I know what I'm doing. If there wasn't enough food, I wouldn't have given you any. Today's vegetable dumplings have flour in them, try them." Song Yan also took out some strawberries. Song Yan had ground the corn into flour yesterday. He made a whole basinful. The corn in the field is almost ripe again. There's definitely no shortage of food.
“You’ve been so good to us, kid. We can’t really help you with anything,” Old Du said.
"I don't need your help in any way," Song Yan suddenly lowered his voice. "Besides, didn't I get something good?"
…
"Second Uncle, let's eat rabbit meat."
"Second Uncle, let's eat rabbit meat."
Wei An and Wei Ping clung to Wei Aiguo's legs like two sandbags. This was the two children's welcoming ceremony for their beloved second uncle.
“I’m busy working every day, I don’t have time to go into the mountains! Rabbits aren’t so easy to catch.” With a child on one leg, Wei Aiguo slowly took steps.
Wei Ping and Wei An simultaneously released their second uncle and squatted down to look at an overturned willow basket. They called out at the same time, "Second Uncle, Second Uncle!"
Wei Aiguo went over to take a look and saw a rabbit covered under the willow basket. Wei Aiguo quickly asked Song Yan, who was cooking, "Where did this rabbit come from?"
"I dug a hole and covered the opening with grass, thinking something might fall in. When I went to check today, there was a rabbit inside!" Song Yan pointed to the rabbit under the willow basket. "I don't know how to clean a rabbit. Let's clean it up later and stew it for dinner tonight."
"Is the food ready yet? Let me clean the rabbit first." Wei Aiguo picked up the rabbit and weighed it in his hand; the rabbit was quite plump!
"I'd like to invite Xiaoxiao over for dinner tonight." Song Yan thought it over carefully, and decided to ask Wei Aiguo's opinion before inviting Xiaoxiao over.
“I told her when I went to work in the afternoon,” Wei Aiguo said.
"Okay!" Song Yan replied cheerfully.
In the afternoon, Song Yan did some needlework. She was thinking about what to cook for dinner.
"Sister-in-law, are you feeling any better these days?"
Song Yan found the sound annoying. Aunt Wei, however, seemed oblivious, as if she were very welcome. She entered the house and unceremoniously sat on the kang (heated brick bed). Out of politeness, Song Yan greeted her and poured her a bowl of water. Aunt Wei glared at Song Yan several times. She had told him that her son didn't believe her when she said her patriotic wife had caught fish. But yesterday, villagers had seen her give Cheng Youfu two big fish. This spendthrift wife couldn't tell right from wrong; did she expect him to ask for them himself?
These days, when she has free time, Song Yan would chat with her mother-in-law. Speaking of Aunt Wei, she was particularly fond of taking advantage of others. Her mother-in-law disliked her, but there was nothing she could do; after all, Aunt Wei was Grandpa Wei Ping's brother.
Song Yan went out and covered the water vat in the yard. Who told her to catch so many fish yesterday! She kept a few in the vat. Song Yan only gave her things to people she wanted to give them to. Other annoying people shouldn't even think about it. As Song Yan entered the house, she overheard Aunt Wei's words: "Isn't it because my eldest grandson isn't feeling well? I usually can't ask you for help, but I really have no choice."
She wants something, but I don't know what she wants.
"I can't go down to the fields either; my wife, who loves her country, keeps all the things," Aunt Wei stammered.
"Just because she keeps it doesn't mean it's hers! Sister-in-law, I'm not trying to be mean, but you're such a spineless mother-in-law. Look at me, which of my daughters-in-law dares to say a word?" Aunt Wei said proudly.
I didn't hear my mother-in-law's voice.
Song Yan entered the room.
"Second Aunt, Second Grandma wants white flour dumplings," Wei Ping said immediately. Clearly, Wei Ping and Wei An were unhappy; white flour dumplings were so delicious! Why give them to her?
"Patriotic daughter-in-law. Your mother-in-law wants you to get me some flour," Aunt Wei said imperiously.
"I, I didn't..."
“The child is sick and just wants to eat something good. You, as the grandmother, can’t bear to let him?” Aunt Wei interrupted her mother-in-law forcefully. The mother-in-law had no reason to argue.
“My mother-in-law’s leg is so badly injured. She hasn’t even had anything good to eat yet, how could your grandson possibly have any?” Song Yan wouldn’t tolerate her. Song Yan turned around and went to the outer room. Instantly, all the delicious food was put away.
"Oh, sister-in-law, look how spoiled you've become of your wife!" Aunt Wei exclaimed.
Song Yan thought, "You must have eaten a lot at home, otherwise how could you have so much energy?" "Let me tell you, stay if you can, get out if you can't." He had no choice but to be subservient to Wei Aiguo, but he didn't need to indulge others.
"Sister-in-law, are you going to do anything about your wife doing this?" Aunt Wei shouted.
Song Yan shouldn't have chased away his elders, but Song Yan was his daughter-in-law. Aunt Wei felt she couldn't side with outsiders! "Let's wait for Aiguo to come back! His wife's affairs are his responsibility." Besides, Aunt Wei hadn't expected Song Yan to chase her away so directly.
"Oh dear, my dear sister-in-law! Look at you, bullied by your daughter-in-law, not even daring to utter a word! Today I'll stand up for you. I'm going to the village head and see if this unfilial daughter-in-law needs some kind of moral education!" Aunt Wei had her own reasons. Because of Wu Meili's affair, Aiguo and his wife had definitely offended the village head terribly. She refused to believe that, now that they were in the village head's hands, he would still side with them. Aunt Wei wailed all the way to the village committee to find the village head.
