He Jianian talked about it for days on end among the women of the brigade. And as they talked, new rumors began to circulate.
The villagers heard from people in other villages that He Jianian had gone to the hospital for treatment and that he was infertile.
Oh my God! He Jianian is infertile, so whose child is Wu Meili carrying?
Everyone who looked at He Jianian thought he was being cuckolded. In the end, the only ones who find out about these things are usually the people involved, or even their immediate family. For example, the brigade leader and his wife, and his son's family.
The brigade leader's wife was weaving baskets with her two sons. That day, she finished her task and was delivering the baskets to the weaving group. She arrived at the group but hadn't gone in yet, because the door was ajar, and the sounds of conversation inside could be clearly heard from outside.
"He Jianian is really something. Knowing the child isn't his own, he still takes care of Wu Meili every day." The voice sounds like Hu Youguang's wife.
"Look at him, he can't lift a finger or carry anything on his shoulders. He can't even support himself with those few work points. What else can he do if he doesn't stick with Wu Meili?" The tone was full of sarcasm.
"As long as He Jianian has food to eat, that's all that matters. What are you all worrying about?" That was Chen Xiaodong's wife's voice.
The team leader's wife was furious; she couldn't stand He Jianian anymore. But she couldn't let He Jianian ruin his reputation! It involved her daughter too!
"I think you're all just bored out of your minds. All you do is gossip and idle chatter." The team leader's wife stormed into the house, looking like she was about to hit someone. Her son followed behind, blocking the door to prevent her from running away.
The women in the room were stunned; they were all quite embarrassed to have been caught gossiping.
"None of you are leaving today. Stand there and tell me what happened. Where did you hear this gossip? I'll tear that gossipmonger to shreds!" The brigade leader's wife was going crazy. If He Jianian was infertile, wouldn't that mean her daughter was having an affair?
Chen Xiaodong's wife came out first, saying, "Auntie, let me help you to that room to sit for a while."
"Sit down? You were talking so enthusiastically just now, keep going." If the team leader's wife wasn't worried about bringing bad influence to her husband, she would have started hitting him right now.
Chen Xiaodong's wife knows the whole story perfectly well.
The women inside were a little scared; they were talking about the brigade leader's family.
"What's wrong?" Li Yuanzhao came in from outside.
"Back when Cheng Xiuyun was in charge of the weaving group, you said she was just a gossip. But isn't the weaving group still the same now?" The team leader's wife's anger was directed at Li Yuanzhao.
Li Yuanzhao naturally wanted to find out what had happened. She wasn't completely unaware of the rumors surrounding He Jianian. However, when she was in the knitting group, no one dared to talk about it openly.
Li Yuanzhao sent the team leader's wife to wait next door, wanting to know what had happened.
Chen Xiaodong's wife stepped forward. She said she knew about it and would speak to him...
When the team leader's wife heard what Chen Xiaodong's wife said, her mind went completely blank. She staggered back to find her husband. She would have had a hard time getting home if her son hadn't been supporting her.
When his wife came home, she cried and sobbed as she told her husband about He Jianian.
The captain was also a bit dumbfounded.
Before the Lunar New Year, Xu Qing from Hexi Village saw He Jianian going to the commune hospital for a checkup. Xu Qing was also there for a medical appointment, along with several other people from Hexi Village. They overheard the doctor and He Jianian's conversation clearly outside the door.
The doctor said He Jianian has a problem, and given his current condition, it will be difficult for him to have children.
Coincidentally, one of them recognized He Jianian as Captain Wu's son-in-law. And so, the news spread.
Chen Xiaodong's wife meant that she had inquired about the matter carefully when she first heard about it. This story had been circulating in other brigades for quite some time. It only reached our brigade in the last few days.
This means it's impossible to suppress this matter anymore.
The key questions are: Does He Jianian actually have the ability to have children? And has her own daughter done anything shameful?
Captain Wu really wanted to drag He Jianian over and beat him up. But he couldn't do that yet.
I did hear from the girl before the New Year that He Jianian went to see a doctor, but I didn't hear anything about it.
The captain couldn't sit still any longer and went straight to the Hexi Brigade.
The captain of the Hexi brigade stepped in to inquire about the matter, and soon they got some information. Several people had overheard the doctor saying this at the hospital. Everyone heard it. He Jianian would have a very difficult time having children.
The brigade leader was furious and helpless. This was a disgrace to the Hexi Brigade.
After the captain returned home, he asked his son to find Wu Meili and bring her back!
"Whose child is it?" Captain Wu felt utterly humiliated once again.
Wu Meili was stunned; the child in her belly was of course He Jianian's.
Wu Meili may be foolish or stupid, but she hasn't done anything else yet. Hearing her father ask her that, she panicked and started crying and making a scene.
When something like this happens, it's still easier to talk to your wife and daughter...
When Wu Meili learned the whole story, she was dumbfounded. Didn't she know what she had done? How could such rumors exist?
No wonder I felt something was off before the New Year. He Jianian is always good-tempered, but lately he's been acting strangely.
So that's the problem.
Since her mother had brought it up, Wu Meili quietly asked her mother as well…
The team leader's wife was stunned by her daughter's words. They hadn't had sex more than a few times in the past few months. Even if He Jianian was worried about hurting the baby, it shouldn't have been like that. He Jianian was simply impotent!
