Chapter 3 Injured Leg

"Is Song Yan in the house?" Women's Director Wang Wenjuan arrived.

When Song Yan got up from the kang (a heated brick bed), Wang Wenjuan had already come in.

“I heard from your mother-in-law that you took care of her this morning. That shows you’re considerate. Your mother-in-law is such a good person. You caused her to break her leg, and she didn’t say a bad word about you. You couldn’t find a mother-in-law like that even with a lantern. You should cherish what you have.” Wang Wenjuan didn’t want to get involved in the educated youth’s messy affairs. But what could she do? She was Song Yan’s matchmaker!

"I know, I will definitely do better in the future." What else could Song Yan do besides express her attitude?

Wang Wenjuan then gave Song Yan a long lecture. She then praised Aunt Wei and Wei Aiguo a whole host of good deeds before leaving.

No sooner had Wang Wenjuan left than Li Yuanzhao arrived. Li Yuanzhao had large eyes, thick eyebrows, and a round face—the epitome of beauty for that era. She spoke directly but wasn't harsh. She advised Song Yan that since she had married Wei Aiguo, she should live a good life. Wei Aiguo had a good family background, and she should learn from him. She shouldn't covet those unrealistic things, and she should stay away from people with impure intentions. It's not that people aren't afraid of making mistakes, it's that they make mistakes and don't know how to correct them…

After seeing Li Yuanzhao off, Song Yan pondered her words. There were now three men and five women at the educated youth settlement. Besides Jiang Xiaoxiao, only Li Yuanzhao had ever offered her such advice. She was referring to He Jianian when she said someone with impure intentions! Many people had figured it out, only the clueless Song Yan didn't. But only Xiaoxiao and Li Yuanzhao could say it out loud. In the original story, Li Yuanzhao was portrayed as a positive, optimistic, and strong person.

Song Yan hurried to check on Aunt Wei. She wanted to know if Aunt Wei needed water or to relieve herself. On the kang (heated brick bed) in Aunt Wei's room were about 30 eggs and some sugar. Aunt Wei explained to Song Yan that villagers had heard she had broken her leg and came to see what she had brought.
