Chapter 301 Gathering

It's this late, and the guests show no sign of leaving. The most basic courtesy is to invite them to stay for lunch.

When Song Yan invited them to stay for lunch, Qiu Hai's mother said, "Song Yan, your cooking is so delicious. We came here specifically to freeload. We even brought our own food."

The guards took noodles and meat out of the car.

“There are many of us, so we can get things done quickly. Just tell us what to do. Sister Feng isn’t feeling well, so she can just sit inside,” said Wang Jinhui’s mother.

"Let's eat dumplings." Song Yan turned and went into the storeroom, where he brought out a large basket of shepherd's purse, a few zucchini, and more than ten wild eggs.

Song Yan planned to make two kinds of fillings. Qiu Hai's mother thought it would be better to make them all with meat filling, and if that wasn't enough, they could add more wild vegetables! Otherwise, they would have to eat more than ten wild eggs.

"A few half-grown boys will come back in a little while."

I also asked Sister He for help. Sister He is Commander He's wife. I always trouble Sister He, and I wanted to get her some dumplings too.

"If we don't have enough, it won't be enough!" When Song Yan went out to get some wild vegetables, Da Jun was peeking in from the doorway. Was it his mother who sent him to ask if the family needed anything else?

Sister-in-law He has helped me a lot, so this opportunity to let Sister-in-law He get to know Qiu Hai's mother and the others will be beneficial for Sister-in-law He.

Besides, these two women don't seem like they're good at housework. It's already this late; if we delay any longer, when will we get lunch? Let's call Sister He to come and help!

"We just came along to have a good chat, and you're the one who has to pay for it." Qiu Hai's mother felt that her family hadn't properly thanked Song Yan, and now they had gotten a free ride.

"The zucchini was picked from the garden, it cost nothing. The wild eggs were found when I was foraging for wild vegetables. They cost nothing too. What's the big deal?" Song Yan and the others started picking wild vegetables.

The leaders got bored sitting inside, so they went out. One of the three guards stayed behind to accompany them. The other two guards stayed to help with the work.

"Old Xu's bodyguard, Guo Gang, knows how to knead dough. Little Guo, get moving!" Qiu Hai's mother called out.

"Yes, Auntie! I'll do it right away." The young man immediately went to wash his hands.

The door rang, and Sister He arrived with her own chopping board and cleaver.

"Sister-in-law He, come in quickly, we're waiting for you to help with the work," Song Yan called to Sister-in-law He.

Song Yan introduced each of the leaders' wives to her.

Song Yan was right; these aunties could work, but they weren't exactly good at it. If they hadn't gotten Sister He to come and help, who knows how late the meal would have been.

Sister-in-law He is a perceptive person and speaks with great tact. Everyone worked while chatting, creating a very pleasant atmosphere.

He Dajun was just a gofer.

It's so hot outside, it's unbearable to cook a few pots of dumplings indoors. The afternoon is better, though, we can eat them right there in the yard.

It's the middle of the day! How can anyone eat under this blazing sun?

He listened to his mother and went to find his father.

For soldiers on the march and fighting, sleeping outdoors was a minor matter; setting up a temporary stove was a simple task.

Commander He called over a few soldiers to set up a makeshift stove in the yard. It would be cooler if they didn't light a fire inside.

The leaders weren't here to inspect work today. They found a shady spot under a tree, set up a chessboard, and started playing. Seeing Commander He approaching, Old Qiu called out to him, "Are you done with work today? Come over and play a couple of games if you have time."

After setting up the stove, Lao He went to watch the excitement.

When Lao He arrived, he didn't call Deputy Regiment Commander Xing. Deputy Regiment Commander Xing was at home writing a self-criticism! The final punishment for his wife's demand for things from her subordinates is still pending.

Old Xing was tempted when he heard that these high-ranking officials had arrived! If only one of them could say a few words in his defense, his situation wouldn't be so difficult. But what right did he have to approach them?

The leaders didn't eat in the mess hall or enter the barracks, clearly indicating it was a private gathering. He was even less qualified, as he had no personal relationship with the leaders.

Wang Cuixiang is furious. Her husband is definitely finished; so many leaders have come, but he can't even get close to them.

In particular, Xing Fujun saw Regiment Commander He there when he went out. He heard Dajun say that it was his mother who asked his father to go.

Wang Cuixiang was extremely jealous, and she couldn't help but mutter a few curses under her breath.

Old Xing raised his hand and slapped her twice. "If you hadn't gone this far, would I have ended up in this situation?"

It's prestigious to attend such an occasion.

Several regimental commanders, so why was only Regimental Commander He allowed to go?

Because Sister He and Song Yan have a good relationship...

The filling was mixed, and both guards knew how to roll out dumpling wrappers, and they were quite fast at it.

Several women, including Xu Liangsheng's mother, started making dumplings.

"Mom, you're here!"

"Why didn't you tell me beforehand?"

"Did you bring me anything good to eat?"

It's like a son looking for his own mother.

Fang Shengjie stood there dumbfounded. Yesterday, he called his father, wanting to talk about things here and ask for his advice. He never expected his father wasn't even at the military camp.

Everyone else's parents came today, but he was all alone.

Many hands make light work, and the dumplings were quickly made. Lunch was only a little late, not really.

Commander He and his whole family came and ate dumplings at Song Yan's house. This caused quite a stir among the people, who were envious, thinking how clever Song Yan's wife was, even getting her husband involved. One of their husbands went to check in, but the leader said it was a gathering of families and that work wouldn't be discussed that day, so he sent them home.

They also mocked the Xing family, saying they were all from the same regiment, and looked at the stark contrast...
