Chapter 40 Everyone's Angry

The wheat harvest is over, and everyone is drying the wheat on the threshing floor. In a few days, they will have to hand over the grain to the state.

Song Yan was in a particularly good mood. Her spatial dimension had recently expanded considerably, and the wheat field within was thriving. During the harvest, she collected any scattered grains and planted them in her space. And she hadn't expected to be so lucky. She was just planning a stroll along the edge of the woods when she encountered a roe deer in the bushes. She first brought the deer into her space, then shot it with an arrow at close range. Wild game might be worth some money, right? But she wasn't interested in eating it herself; the food in her space was delicious enough.

Song Yan used to go into her spatial dimension every day to run and practice boxing, originally planning to beat up He Jianian. Now she needed to be able to defend herself. She couldn't just let herself be bullied when Wei Aiguo wasn't home!

Old Du taught him everything he knew, while Old Zeng occasionally offered pointers. Old Du taught martial arts, while Old Zeng taught him life-or-death techniques. Yes, life-or-death techniques. Similar moves were simply variations on the same theme, or the timing of Song Yan's attacks were altered. These could transform self-defense into deadly attacks aimed at the enemy's vital points.

Old Zeng had fought his way up from the battlefield. When he demonstrated his moves, Song Yan could feel the murderous aura emanating from him.

Song Yan was covered in sweat from exercising, so he sat down to read and rest. When his eyes got tired, he took a nice, relaxing shower…

Looking at the rabbits in the cage, Song Yan thought, since he was selling roe deer, wouldn't it be better to sell a few more rabbits? When Wei Aiguo sees the roe deer, he'll definitely ask if they went to Lao Heishan. At best, he'll be unhappy; at worst, he'll throw a tantrum! Either way, it's a one-time thing, so a few more rabbits would be more profitable!

Song Yan released a rabbit into the spatial dimension using his mind. Domesticated animals are so dull; don't they know how to run away? No, they're just bewildered when they're released. Song Yan grabbed an arrow, fixed his gaze on the target, and threw it forcefully. The arrow, carrying great momentum, pierced directly into the rabbit's nape.

Song Yan tried a few more times. Wherever she focused her eyes within the space, the arrows she threw would accurately hit their target. She could even use her consciousness to control objects within the space to instantly attack targets. However, the force of objects thrown with her consciousness was less than that of objects thrown by her when she was physically inside the space. Unfortunately, once the thrown objects left the space, they were no longer under her control and could not change direction. Inside the space, she could control them at will.

When Wei Aiguo returned from work at noon, Wei Ping and Wei An didn't come out to greet her as cheerfully as they usually did. What was wrong? The atmosphere inside the house was also off.

Wei Ping: "Grandma is angry."

Wei An: "Grandma scolded Auntie."

Did Song Yan upset his mother? "Mother, you're usually so good-tempered. What's wrong today?"

Aunt Wei: Go and check the storeroom. I told you, you're not allowed to hunt, you're not allowed to hunt.

When Wei Aiguo saw the roe deer and three rabbits laid out on the ground, his face turned as black as the bottom of a pot.

Song Yan had a survival instinct. "I didn't go into Laoheishan. Mother, was I only gone out for a short while? It was such a short time, I didn't even have time to get to Laoheishan."

Wei Aiguo looked at his mother with a questioning gaze.

Aunt Wei's voice still had a nasal tone. "She's only been out for a short while. Not even as long as she usually fishes."

Wei Aiguo looked at Song Yan with a questioning gaze, "There are so many prey around the village."

Song Yan felt a little flustered under Wei Aiguo's gaze. "Ever since I started fishing, how many people in the village have followed me? But no one has caught anything, right? I'm just that lucky."

Aunt Wei said, "Song Yan went out for a while this afternoon. But now that you've tasted the sweetness of hunting, will you be able to control yourself next time?" She then started wiping away tears. It had happened all afternoon. Why did she feel so bad seeing someone cry?

Song Yan slunk out. She had stayed in the space for a long time, and fortunately, as long as she didn't pay attention to what was happening outside, time outside seemed to stand still. Only then did her mother-in-law realize that Song Yan hadn't been out for very long that afternoon!

During the meal, the mother-in-law's mood improved considerably; it's unclear how Wei Aiguo managed to persuade her. However, at the table, Wei Aiguo kept glaring at her from left to right.

What are you glaring at me for? If it weren't for needing an excuse for the source of the money, she would have just put the roe deer into her spatial storage. Is it really such a big deal to spend money like this?

Wei Aiguo didn't go to work in the afternoon. He left one rabbit behind and took the rest to the commune.

The mother-in-law was listless all afternoon; the prey must have stirred up painful memories for her. She was very worried—perhaps she now considered Song Yan family? She was extremely concerned for her safety.

Song Yan was right about most of it. The old lady was worried that she might not listen and could actually hurt herself while hunting.

It was a fully grown roe deer, weighing 53 jin (26.5 kg), and sold for one yuan per jin. Two rabbits sold for eight yuan. The total was sixty-one yuan. Wei Aiguo gave it all to Song Yan. He had also given Song Yan all the money from selling the wild boar last time. In the village, families that didn't separate their households usually kept their money with the elders; it was almost unheard of for them to give it directly to their daughters-in-law like this. Song Yan thought it was good that the Wei family kept their money. "Do you have any money? You should keep some!" They'd gone to so much trouble to make the trip; shouldn't they give them something in return?

Wei Aiguo looked up at Song Yan. It was somewhat unexpected. Song Yan was quite generous; just look at the food she gave to Lao Han and the others—she was never stingy. After selling the wild boar last time, she even bought a lot of things. But Wei Aiguo could sense that Song Yan had a very strong desire to control her possessions. He couldn't quite pinpoint exactly where he'd noticed it, but he had this feeling. "No need, I'll ask you for money if I need it," Wei Aiguo said. He was strong enough to earn work points; he didn't need to spend a woman's money.
