Chapter 45 Broken Leg

Song Yan stopped throwing tantrums at Wei Aiguo, but he's been noticeably quieter these past few days.

There's no mechanized farming now; the wheat is all threshed manually at the market. They work in three shifts. The moonlight has been really good these past two nights, so no work gets delayed. Wei Aiguo, on the night shift, said, "Song Yan, tonight, could you bring me some fish soup? Before my shift ends. I'll have Chen Xiaodong come and wake you up tonight; he'll follow you around, so you won't be scared."

Song Yang glanced at him. What did he mean by that? "I'm not going!"

Wei Aiguo pulled Song Yan into his arms, stroking her smooth hair. "How long are you going to stay angry over someone who's not worth it?"

"I'm not angry with you," Song Yan muttered softly. Wei Aiguo was being very careful around her; how could he be angry? He was the kind of rugged man she admired for his looks, and his mannerisms lacked the rudeness of some rough men. He was also diligent, mostly delivering hay to the cowshed, not to mention chopping wood and carrying water. Song Yan never thought about those intangible things; she valued these tangible things. Most importantly, she appreciated his respect and compassion—not every man could resist that at that moment…

I'll wait for you to grow up.

I can't bear to force you.

These two sweet words were enough to make me fall for them! They stirred the girlish heart of this older woman!

Wei Aiguo kissed Song Yan on the cheek before leaving.

People with plenty of energy like Wei Aiguo usually don't stop working after their shift; they work for another two hours. This earns them 12 work points. Normally, everyone brings their own rations, and the team sets up a big pot to boil water for everyone to drink. Today, Song Yan brought over fish soup, which made many people incredibly envious.

"What are you looking at? Get back to work, it's not time to rest yet." Everyone was just watching the fun and their work slowed down, which displeased the team leader.

It was time for a change of personnel. Wei Aiguo's shift stopped, and the next group started working again. Several people followed behind Wei Aiguo, all hoping to get a taste of the fish soup. "You brought bowls? Are you planning to drink it with your hands?"

Only then did everyone realize what was happening and run to find the bowl.

Chen Xiaodong poured a bowl, Wei Aiguo poured a bowl, and the rest were handed out to everyone.

There was a shack by the threshing floor, and Wei Aiguo led Song Yan inside to rest, without anyone noticing. It was normal for the newlyweds to be affectionate. If it were anyone else, someone might have gone over to them, but Wei Aiguo was someone most people wouldn't dare to mess with.

The workers were working hard in the threshing ground when Hu Youguang laughed and scolded, "Wei Lao Er, I thought you were reluctant to come out."

"What, are you worried I won't do enough work? I don't take assignments for granted." With that, Wei Aiguo started working.

Song Yan dozed off in the thatched shed. She waited until Wei Aiguo finished work before going back with her. Once inside and closed the door, Song Yan impatiently asked, "Where have you been?"

Wei Aiguo: "Wasn't I drinking fish soup? Then I spent some time cuddling with my wife."

"Fine, don't tell me then." Song Yan wasn't even going to ask anymore.

Wei Aiguo held Song Yan in his arms and whispered in her ear.

Really?

Why would I lie to you? Remember, we've been living in the shack all along.

The next morning, the talk of the village in Qingshan was that Cheng Yi's leg had been broken. Everyone said he deserved it, while speculating about who did it. Suspecting Wei Aiguo was inevitable. But Wei Aiguo had been working in the threshing ground the night before, and he and his wife hadn't returned home until just before dawn, which many people had witnessed. Cheng Yi's leg was broken on his way home from work, around midnight. So it was impossible to pin the blame on Wei Aiguo. Cheng Yi's mother said it was Wei Aiguo retaliating against her son. But after hearing everyone's opinions, she had no choice but to keep quiet.

Song Yan described Wei Aiguo as a cunning and ruthless fellow. What about Mao Xuebin? How will they retaliate? He said there was no rush; if things went wrong with both of them, it would raise suspicions.

Before Cheng Yi's matter had even subsided, Qingshan Brigade received new news. This year, the commune was installing power lines for all the brigades.

One-third of the able-bodied men from Qingshan Brigade were assigned to dig the electrical trenches. Song Yan was so excited! Finally, they would have electric lights to use.

This year's wheat harvest was good; after paying the grain tax, the brigade had a considerable amount left over. Each family naturally received a larger share. After the wheat was dried, it was transported to the commune by oxcart. Song Yan went to the commune on the first cart. Wei Aiguo had already spoken to Sixth Brother, and Song Yan would sell all her cloth to him. Song Yan used the excuse of going to the county to buy cloth to browse the county's black market. She had quite a few rabbits, roosters, and eggs in her spatial storage again. What made her happiest was that the dates were ripe. The dates were large, sweet, and small-pitted; the three date trees didn't yield much, only two hundred catties of dates. Surprisingly, the trees blossomed five or six days after the date harvest, and now the next batch has already started bearing fruit.

Song Yan's business on the black market was still booming. His jujubes were a unique deal; one person bought out 210 pounds of jujubes at 80 cents a pound. Roosters, rabbits, and eggs were also selling well. This was because Song Yan's produce was generally larger for the same price. Take eggs, for example: other vendors sold 8 to 10 eggs per pound, while Song Yan's 7 eggs easily made up a pound—how could they not sell?

Song Yan knew when to stop and stopped when he had enough. If someone were watching him, they would definitely try to figure out where these things came from.

Song Yan found Han Yu to be particularly straightforward and enjoyed dealing with people like that. Following the address Han Yu had given her before, she found Han Yu's family home. Song Yan had often eaten meals cooked by Han Yu's mother, so it was perfectly reasonable for her to deliver a basket of eggs to them today.

Han Yu's mother looked to be in her early forties, though she was probably older. She had fair skin and a constant smile. The house was impeccably clean. A basket of eggs was a significant gift at this time. The old lady refused to accept it. After understanding the relationship between Song Yan and Han Yu, she refused even more; a few meals weren't worth that many eggs. Han Yu's mother knew that although she had bought Song Yan some cloth, it wasn't worth that much. In Song Yan's eyes, these things were nothing. Song Yan insisted on leaving the gifts and left.
