Chapter 207 The Journey

It got windy in the afternoon, and after walking for more than an hour, it started to snow a little. The sky looked fine, so why did it start snowing?

On the way back, they were still facing the wind. The carriage was moving slower back than it had in the morning.

Song Yan and Chang Xiaohu took turns driving the carriage. There weren't many forks in the road, so they weren't likely to get lost. The wind was strong, but thankfully it was just a few scattered snowflakes; otherwise, it would have been blowing like a whirlwind.

The drifting snow swirled into icicles in the windy area, making it impossible for the carriage to pass. Song Yan and Chang Xiaohu got off and used shovels to clear the snow from the road.

The snow ridges didn't look big, but digging them open was quite difficult. Encountering three snow ridges slowed me down considerably.

When Song Yan felt that it was getting dark, he realized that they had gone halfway.

The route from Qingshan Brigade to Daxiling passes through two villages, Zhangjia Brigade and Shengfa Brigade. Once we reach the villages, things will be easier. "Mom, how much further to Shengfa Brigade?"

"It's all my fault. If I had come back tomorrow, we wouldn't have been delayed halfway." Aunt Wei was indeed a little flustered.

I'm already so old, it wouldn't matter if I froze to death halfway there. But Xiao Hu and Song Yan are young!

That means it's still far from the village.

"Mother, it's not anyone's fault. I didn't want to stay at the Liu family's either. Who knew it would start snowing this afternoon? If it weren't for the sleet, we wouldn't be so slow." Song Yan cracked his whip, hoping the cart would go as fast as it could.

Chang Xiaohu tried to make his journey to the bus as long as possible. People rushing to catch the bus face the wind, which is quite cold.

While everyone was distracted, Song Yan took a few steamed buns from his spatial storage and stuffed the cleaver into the basket.

Song Yan was glad that when she arrived at the Liu family's house, she had casually taken the basket inside. That way, she would have an excuse if the steamed buns weren't frozen solid when she took them out later.

There is still hot water in the kettle.

It slowly got dark.

Song Yan lit the kerosene lamp. The brigade leader had prepared it in advance, anticipating that they would have to work late.

Aunt Wei: "It's all my fault. There's something on my mind that I just want to know the truth about. Shi Tou said his mother won't last much longer, and I'm afraid that once she dies, no one will know."

"Mom, don't worry so much. We'll make it back." Song Yan was confident of this. She took a steamed bun from the basket and handed it to her mother-in-law. She also poured half a tub of hot water. "I brought these especially because I was worried we'd be late. Have a bite."

Aunt Wei handed the steamed bun to Song Yan again, saying, "You eat first! I'm not hungry."

"They're probably worried there won't be enough to eat!" Song Yan didn't say much and started eating. Although the steamed buns were cold, they were still soft and fluffy, and with half a bowl of hot water, he felt much better.

"Xiao Hu, come here, I'll drive the carriage. You eat your food." Song Yan went to drive the carriage.

Xiao Hu hesitated; his godmother hadn't eaten yet.

"There's enough to eat. You eat first, otherwise your godmother won't feel at ease." Song Yan stuffed two steamed buns into Xiao Hu's hands.

Sure enough, Aunt Wei only ate after she saw that everyone else had eaten.

Actually, the water in the thermos was no longer boiling hot. Song Yan used a large basket as a cover to fill it with freshly boiled water from his spatial storage.

Everyone drank some of the boiling water. Song Yan then filled the hot water bottle. The kettle still contained more than half a bottle of hot water.

Everyone was in a hurry to get home, and neither Grandma nor Xiaohu noticed this little detail.

Song Yan told Xiao Hu to be careful not to go the wrong way. Xiao Hu was very confident that he was on the right track.

"Second Sister-in-law, it sounds like wolves howling." Chang Xiaohu immediately tensed up.

"Your hearing is good. The fact that you can hear it means it's quite far away. It's alright." Although Song Yan said this, she still took out her gun.

The lantern hung in front of the carriage, its tiny light unable to illuminate very far in the endless darkness.

At first, Aunt Wei couldn't see clearly what Song Yan was holding.

This was an old-fashioned rifle. Song Yan shifted his position and chambered a bullet. Only in the dim light could Aunt Wei see that Song Yan was holding a gun.

"Why are you carrying a gun?" It was Song Yan and Chang Xiaohu who went to catch the carriage at the time; Aunt Wei didn't know that.

"Youfu got it for me from the militia. It's for self-defense." Song Yan thought to himself, this younger brother didn't eat his fish for nothing. He hadn't spoiled him for nothing.

"Second Sister-in-law, can you shoot a gun?" Chang Xiaohu had seen Song Yan's skillful movements. But not everyone knows how to use a gun.

"Didn't Cheng Youfu say this morning that he taught me?"

Song Yan loaded the second bullet into the gun.

"Are you a good shot?" Chang Xiaohu always felt that his second sister-in-law was not very reliable with a gun.

"Ouch..."

This time, both Song Yan and Aunt Wei heard the wolf howling.

"Little Tiger, can you climb trees?" Aunt Wei asked.

Yes!

Aunt Wei said, "If the wolves come, you help your sister-in-law climb the tree. You climb the tree too. This horse can feed the wolves."

"Godmother, what about you?" Chang Xiaohu asked anxiously.

"I'm old, but living to this age has been worthwhile. The wolves are full now, so they won't be so persistent in guarding you..."

"No! We need to hurry. It'll be fine once we get to the village." After lashing out twice with his whip, Chang Xiaohu's voice was trembling with tears; they couldn't possibly reach the village. "Godmother, you and Second Sister-in-law should climb the tree."

Song Yan felt a warmth in his heart. "Those who won't abandon me, I won't abandon you either." "Don't worry, I'm here! There are 100 bullets here."
