Chapter 25 Divorce

"Song Yan, what brings you here?" Li Yuanzhao's heart skipped a beat when she saw this.

"I'm here to see Xiaoxiao... and you." Putting aside the original plot, Song Yan really liked Li Yuanzhao's character and personality, so he figured he might as well have a meal with her.

Li Yuanzhao surprisingly took Song Yan's arm. "What do you need me for?"

Was he really that close to Li Yuanzhao? Song Yan caught a glimpse of Wei Aiguo out of the corner of his eye. Song Yan seemed to understand Li Yuanzhao's meaning and smiled genuinely at her; she was a good girl. "I'd like to invite you and Xiaoxiao to my house for dinner."

He Jianian felt very uncomfortable. Song Yan had cooked something delicious again, but it had nothing to do with him.

Just then, Xiaoxiao returned. She and Li Yuanzhao had both been persuaded by Song Yan and decided to go to Old Wei's house with Song Yan… “Aiguo, are you waiting for your wife? Your wife was sent out from the educated youth program, she misses her fellow educated youth.” Women who work in the fields with men get tanned dark. But this woman was different; she was much fairer than the others, with an oval face and beautiful eyes. This made her noticeably more attractive than other women. If you examined her words closely, she would say she meant nothing by it. But somehow, it just didn't sound right. Song Yan wasn't surprised by her strangeness, but by her voice.

“Song Yan has been thinking about me a lot. He made some delicious food, and even though we didn’t go, he came to our door.” Xiaoxiao immediately chimed in.

What exactly is this widow Wang up to? Li Yuanzhao glanced at her. "Song Yan, thanks to you today, I'll have a good meal too." With that, she pulled the two of them away. As they passed Wei Aiguo, Li Yuanzhao said generously, "I also want to thank Comrade Wei Aiguo."

Upon arriving at Wei Ai's house, Song Yan brought out the food one by one. Jiang Xiaoxiao and Li Yuanzhao were extremely surprised, "How come there's so much delicious food?"

"The child was malnourished, so I bought a set of pig offal," said Aunt Wei. She already knew about the wild boar being sold.

Wei Ping and Wei An's faces have noticeably gotten fuller from Song Yan's feeding over the past two months.

After lunch, Li Yuanzhao and Jiang Xiaoxiao insisted on helping to clear the dishes. These days, not everyone is well-off, and they felt embarrassed to have such a lavish lunch. If doing chores would put them at ease, then they should be allowed to do it.

The sky was heavily overcast; it looked like it was going to rain. Wei Aiguo picked up his bucket and went to fetch water from the well in the west of the village. It wouldn't be convenient to fetch water on a rainy day. Seeing Wei Aiguo carrying buckets and opening the door, Song Yan suddenly had an idea. Should he let Li Yuanzhao get to know Wei Aiguo? "Sister Yuanzhao, could you help me open the water vat?" There were three water vats in the yard, used for storing water. Now, Song Yan was using one of them to raise fish.

They were far apart. Song Yan couldn't hear what they were saying. But she could see that Wei Aiguo's expression was gentle. When Wei Aiguo looked at Song Yan, he was mostly cold. Perhaps that was the charm of the female lead.

By the time Wei Aiguo and the others went to work, it hadn't rained yet. Song Yan settled the family, young and old, and then went fishing. There was only one fish left in the tank, not enough to eat… Sitting by the river for a few hours, Song Yan could have a full catch. Surprisingly, he actually caught two mandarin fish today. Mandarin fish are delicious, but unfortunately, they were too small. Song Yan tossed them into the pond in his spatial dimension. Song Yan had already expanded his spatial dimension with several small ponds, keeping different kinds of fish separately: carp, crucian carp, mandarin fish, bighead carp, grass carp…

"Sister, let me help you carry the bucket!" Cheng Youfu called out.

Song Yan: "If you don't work properly, the team leader will deduct your work points."

"It's alright. My brother will finish the rest for me." The Cheng family dotes on Cheng Youfu, and he often leaves unfinished work behind, which his brothers and sisters-in-law do for him. This afternoon, he saw Song Yan come out with a fishing rod and decided to come watch him fish.

How could Song Yan let anyone see him fishing? Wouldn't that give him away? "You've caught quite a few today. You can catch two yourself, and take the rest back to me!"

"Okay, okay, okay. I'll definitely deliver the fish to your house, sis." Cheng Youfu swallowed hard as he looked at the fish in the bucket; the biggest one weighed five pounds. "Sis, how did you catch such a big fish?"

Wei Aiguo had also pondered this problem; he specifically looked at the fish bait Song Yan made with bran. There wasn't anything particularly special about it…

Everything was handed over to Cheng Youfu. Song Yan then went for another walk in the mountains. Wei Ping kept mentioning the rabbit…

When Song Yan returned from the mountains, Cheng Youfu was still there, pestered by Wei Ping and Wei An. He didn't have any chores waiting for him at home, so he spent the time playing with the two children. It was a good opportunity to have him help clean the rabbit. At dinner, Wei Ping finally got to eat the rabbit as he had hoped.

With meat and fish served, Aunt Wei and her two children were very happy, but Wei Aiguo remained rather silent. Song Yan had also been thinking about something all afternoon and wanted to ask Wei Aiguo about it. When the two of them returned to the house, Song Yan couldn't wait to ask, "Was the person that night Widow Wang?"

"Yes." Wei Aiguo carefully examined Song Yan. She had an oval face, bright, intelligent eyes, a high nose bridge, and bright red lips. Her features combined to make her very beautiful. It seemed she wasn't like this when they first met. Her eyebrows were thick, giving her a somewhat spirited look, which overshadowed her natural beauty! Wei Aiguo had witnessed her kindness to her mother and children these past few days. Perhaps he should give her a chance. Divorced women are looked down upon, and divorced female educated youth without family by their side would face even greater difficulties. Pushing Song Yan directly into that situation... Wei Aiguo felt a pang of reluctance.

Hearing only a single word in response, Song Yan wiped the water from her face with a towel. "Widow Wang is really quite bold..." Song Yan didn't finish her sentence because Wei Aiguo was looking at her intently.
