Chapter 139: The Abyss

The distance between dreams wasn't determined by the distance in reality. Often, when Luo Jiujiang jumped from one dream to another, he'd find the two dreamers at least a thousand miles apart. As for the dreams of his messengers, he never encountered any of them.

I don’t know what the standard is for determining the distance of dreams.

Once, when he woke up, he once asked Han Qianling to discuss this issue. It was the first time in his life that Han Qianling frowned slightly and said clearly, "Jiujiang, I don't know the answer to this question."

Even though Han Qianling always claimed his inherited memories were incomplete, and that the dragon had left him little beyond hatred, his knowledge and understanding of many ancient mysteries far surpassed those of many powerful beings. Furthermore, he possessed the body of a dragon, and his cultivation had already reached the Golden Core stage before Luo Jiujiang. Therefore, even if he couldn't provide a complete answer, he often had some scattered ideas.

This was the first time he admitted that he had a gap and knew nothing about a certain field.

"I just saw a fragment of a jade slip in Suzaku Palace. The contents were bizarre and unreal, so I don't know if it's true or not. I just listened to it and didn't take it seriously." Han Qianling slowly recalled, "It said, 'The spirit is like a ghost, and dreams are close to the underworld.'"

Luo Jiujiang had indeed let it slip. His main interest in this question was to quickly discover the pattern of distances between dreams, so he could quickly enter Han Qianling's dream. As for further research, he had no interest in it.

Regardless, repeatedly entering dreams is indeed an excellent way to train the mind. After more than ten consecutive days of dream movement, Luo Jiujiang not only felt that his mind was more resilient than before, but he could also make subtle changes in the dreamer's dreams without the dreamer noticing.

On one occasion, he even engaged in close combat with a nightmare in the dream of the dream master. The two sides used the dream master's dream as a battlefield. The nightmare touched the ground with its horns, continuously weaving layer after layer of dreams that seemed real and illusory. Luo Jiujiang faced the enemy with a firm heart, and every blow he swung out to cut through the dream was actually a manifestation of the concentration of his soul.

The last person and nightmare turned the dreamer's dream world upside down. The characters in the dream each had eight eyes, six ears, and a hundred arms. Their faces changed like a revolving lantern. The foundations of the houses were floating in the air. A three-meter-tall dog was scratched by an ordinary newborn kitten, making it howl. The dreamer's leader's beard fluttered, and he pinched his orchid fingers and whimpered, "My dear, are you very hungry?"

Such an absurd scene finally woke the dreamer up, saving him from the worry of having his soul devoured by the nightmare.

As soon as the dreamer woke up, all outsiders were expelled. It was the first time Luo Jiujiang had fallen out of someone else's dream. The momentary feeling of weightlessness was like a decree of expulsion. Compared to the verbal farewell and the unwelcome look in his eyes and gestures, this method felt quite fresh to him.

He was halfway awake, his mind still half-real in the dream. In a trance akin to a nap, Luo Jiujiang subconsciously drew his sword and struck, actually giving the nightmare a strong blow outside of the dream.

Although the dream master was only at the foundation-building stage, which made it so easy for him to control other people's dreams, the fact that he was able to fight the nightmare outside the dream in the end showed that his soul was indeed much stronger than before.

Although this battle had exhausted his soul, the inevitable fatigue seemed to be reflected in his body as well. Luo Jiujiang awoke drenched in sweat. He kicked off his thin blanket and found a damp, dark-skinned figure imprinted on the dark mattress.

Han Qianling was slowly putting away the handkerchief he had used to wipe the sweat off his face. Turning around, he saw Luo Jiujiang still staring at the mattress in a daze, so he said nonchalantly, "Don't look at me anymore. I'll wipe you next time."

There was actually a hint of happiness in his voice, so Luo Jiujiang turned and stared at him, thinking that the unconcealable joy was definitely not his illusion.

However, whenever Luo Jiujiang woke up from his dream again, no matter how exhausted he was, or even if his head was splitting, his body was always clean and fresh. Even if he had been sweating profusely before, when he opened his eyes again, the bedding was always fresh, not even a bit soaked by sweat.

————————

The dream that Luo Jiujiang entered this time was different from the previous ones.

So far, he has entered more than a hundred dreams, and his experience and responses are smooth enough. He can almost tell the location of the dreamer, his cultivation level, and whether he is a man or a woman as soon as he enters the dream.

Usually, there would only be two main souls in a dream, him and the dreamer. Occasionally, there would be another soul with a mysterious aura, which was the nightmare of a strange beast. Whenever this happened, Luo Jiujiang would go to great lengths to force the nightmare back and save it.

However, although there were three main souls in this dream, the other existence had a completely different feeling from the nightmare. This aura was clean, powerful, and blazing, and at first Luo Jiujiang almost mistook it for the dream master.

It only took Luo Jiujiang a blink of an eye to think. Within such a short period of time, the main soul seemed to have also noticed Luo Jiujiang's existence and ran towards Luo Jiujiang at a fast enough speed.

What a speed! What a vigor! Luo Jiujiang secretly praised in his heart.

One must know that the speed of running in someone's dream isn't determined by physical strength; it's a pure test of the strength of the soul and the ability to harness its power. If this person were traveling at a normal speed, then in terms of pure soul, he'd probably be even more powerful than Luo Jiujiang.

Since the other party was actively trying to find him, Luo Jiujiang did not hide or avoid him. He also released his speed and faced the man head-on. Both parties were not shy and soon they met.
