Chapter 86: Half Dead

Luo Jiujiang was completely unaware of the urgency of the situation. He was currently being carried by the divine heron, flying all the way towards Yao Peak, whose peak was just visible through the distant clouds.

This white bird had a skin of steel, impervious to swords and spears, yet its feathers were not hard or prickly, but smooth and neat. Luo Jiujiang now half-knelt on its broad back, one hand pressing on its warm pillow, his fingers digging slightly into its neck, even able to touch the fine down beneath its snow-white feathers.

Looking down from the sky, Luo Jiujiang felt the roads weaving like shuttles, the pedestrians like sesame, and even the well-arranged blue tiles and white walls seemed delicate and lovely. The world seemed vast, and from this vantage point, the vast academy seemed to be completely contained in Luo Jiujiang's palm.

Luo Jiujiang looked slightly confused for a moment.

Just when he was about to touch some invisible edge, he suddenly felt empty under his body, and his whole body was enveloped by a sudden feeling of weightlessness.

Luo Jiujiang snapped to attention and realized the divine bird had already reached Yao Peak. With a flutter of its wings and a tilt of its body, it flung itself down. Furthermore, it seemed to be seeking credit, circling above Luo Jiujiang's head and chirping excitedly.

I wonder if the divine heron has any hunting habits, but thankfully, it knows how to throw someone from a high altitude, and that person will be beaten to a pulp. Luo Jiujiang's fall was already close to the peak, and by some strange coincidence, he was aiming right at the only flowering tree in the area. With a cry of "Ah," he landed safely on a branch laden with blossoms.

After this respite, Luo Jiujiang, despite breaking a branch due to his weight, was able to handle the sudden situation calmly, using the force of the fall to regain his footing. Just now, his massive human cannon had sent the entire tree crashing down, and now, standing beneath it, frost flowers the color of ice sculptures and the shape of palm-sized lotus flowers rained down upon Luo Jiujiang.

Before, in front of the students of the academy, the white bird did not fly so fast. Just now, when it was carrying Luo Jiujiang, it sped up as if it was having fun, otherwise Luo Jiujiang would not have failed to react.

Seeing that Luo Jiujiang had stood firmly and looked up at him, the divine heron swooped down again and took away the branch of flowing clouds in his arms.

Earlier, they had soared against the wind. Luo Jiujiang had his own spiritual energy protecting him, but the branch had none. As a result, it had been ravaged by the strong air currents from above, leaving only a few scattered petals clinging to the branch. Even so, the divine heron didn't seem to mind, and even rubbed its crowned head against Luo Jiujiang's cheek affectionately.

It wouldn't be a big deal to let the divine heron act coquettishly with him, but it was holding an almost bare branch in its mouth. If Luo Jiujiang hadn't reacted quickly and raised his hand to block it, he would have poked his eyes out.

He suppressed his laughter and gently stroked the feathers on the white bird's head, saying softly, "It's fun to fly in the sky. Thank you for bringing me here."

The egret raised its head proudly and cried out loudly, even flapping its wings. The dust on the ground was thrown everywhere by its flapping wings, and it enveloped Luo Jiujiang in a dark fog.

Luo Jiujiang: “…”

Perhaps it was too excited, the divine heron bounced twice on the ground with its long legs, then spread its wings and flew smoothly into the sky again. Its posture was free and graceful, like a streamline, and it went straight into the vast white clouds in the sky.

Compared to the egret just now, flying deliberately low and slow to allow the students to draw their bows, the egret now looked relaxed and natural, a sight that brought joy to the eyes. Luo Jiujiang watched in admiration for a long moment, until its snow-white tail feathers faded into a tiny black dot at the edge of the sky.

How wonderful! Luo Jiujiang thought happily: seeing such a spiritual being so free and happy, he felt indescribably happy. It was a pity that Ah Su wasn't here, otherwise he might have been able to create another painting of the soul. When he was sent back to him later, he would definitely talk about this matter in detail...

...Hmm? What's wrong?

Luo Jiujiang suddenly realized: The divine heron threw him here and then flapped its wings and flew away. Can he be sent back in a while?

After standing on tiptoe and looking for a while, there was still no sign of the Divine Heron returning to the horizon. Luo Jiujiang sighed with melancholy, but he wasn't too worried. Since he was on the mountain, he could always walk down using his own two legs. If he didn't know the way, he could just ask someone he met. Even if the Divine Heron flew away on its own, if the owner of this place suddenly appeared and asked why he was there, it would be difficult to explain...

"Who are you? How dare you trespass into my Medicine Peak?"

Luo Jiujiang: “…” Whatever you think is coming true!

He turned quickly, revealing a harmless and friendly smile. "My surname is Luo, and I'm an unknown cultivator in the academy. I previously gave the Divine Heron a flower, but it unexpectedly brought it here. I didn't mean to trespass on Yaofeng. I'm truly sorry, fellow Daoist."

When he saw the other person's true face, Luo Jiujiang was slightly surprised.

The man who spoke was thin and gaunt, wrapped in a loose robe, looking like a skeleton covered in human skin. His long bangs fell down on the left side, covering half of his face. The skin on the other side, exposed, was dry and taut, like a new layer of skin that has grown after a burn or meltdown, sallow, dry, and uneven. His eyes seemed as pale as a deathly gray, and as he looked at Luo Jiujiang, his expression lacked a trace of life.

"Where's the bird?" the man asked in a gloomy tone.

Luo Jiujiang replied helplessly: "The bird...flew away by itself."

The divine heron didn't even leave a single drop of bird droppings behind to testify to Luo Jiujiang's story, let alone its feathers. It sounded like he was making it up. If Luo Jiujiang hadn't been the person involved, he would have doubted whether the person who made up the story actually took him seriously.

The man was still looking at Luo Jiujiang. He stood still, not even frowning: "Where are the flowers?"
