Chapter 87: Lord of the North

Sometimes Wu Ting would wonder if this master he followed, who looked like a young boy, had some kind of magical power unknown to other demons.

"You said you wanted to be the Lord of the North, and then you got the North. It's so amazing! I still feel like I'm dreaming."

Wu Ting stood behind Han Qianling and murmured softly. Looking at the lord's rapid expansion, he felt that he had lived in vain all these years.

Han Qianling nodded slowly. At this moment, there was a lot of noise and bustle outside the hall. As the new overlord, he also needed to follow the old custom and hold a grand banquet to make the guests drunk for three days so that the news of the change of ownership of the North would spread to every inch of the land here.

Not far away, a maid was checking the attire that Palace Master Shenxue would wear for the ceremony for the last time, while Han Qianling sat upright on the chair, not showing any excitement or anxiety.

"Weakness accounts for half of our opponents' deaths, greed for the other half." Han Qianling reviewed the list of names of those who had volunteered to submit their invitations from the sandalwood box. "Whether human or demon, there's not much difference in this regard."

Wu Ting swallowed his saliva. For a demon like him, so simple-minded he couldn't even fill a measuring cup to the lowest mark, understanding the words of the Palace Master of Shenxue was often a struggle. As a demon who once made important decisions based solely on rolling the dice, he now only worried about one thing—

"Why did you choose me to be your confidant?"

When his territory was originally limited to Qingping Prefecture, he, the leader of the Five Colors Pavilion, was still worthy of respect, but now Han Qianling has taken control of the entire northern land. He really couldn't explain why he stayed with Han Qianling.

Being valued wasn't a bad thing; seeking profit and avoiding harm was the instinct of all living things. If possible, he hoped to stay with the Palace Master of Shenxue for a little longer. Otherwise, the demon who replaced him would probably take him as a target once he took over.

"Because when I am the Lord of Qingping Mansion, I need a confidant." Han Qianling read the visiting cards very quickly. He had turned to the last page of the stack of gift lists that was as thick as an adult's index finger. He carefully rearranged each one and put them neatly back into the gold-plated box.

For anyone else, it would be hard to say whether this was an answer, but Wu Ting was completely satisfied. Being simple-minded was one of its advantages. He confidently and happily believed that he was the confidant in need. The Palace Master meant that he was an old friend he had promoted from Qingping Mansion, and his position was still secure.

It took the most notorious idiot general under the Palace Master Shenxue twenty years to grasp the terrifying nature of this statement—the Palace Master Shenxue simply needed a living being, or rather, a pendant, like a "confidant." He didn't truly care about their personality, strengths, or even their reverence or loyalty. Regardless of the material, Han Qianling always had a way to use it.

He needed confidants just as the gate of the Deep Snow Palace needed a large plaque, the Buddha's throne needed a lotus crown, and Guanyin needed a white jade bottle in her hand. But no one has ever heard of a palace being deprived of its right to be called a palace because it lacked a plaque, a Buddha being deprived of the right to receive incense because it lacked a lotus throne, or a Guanyin being expelled because she broke a jade bottle.

Because people thought palaces needed plaques, plaques were hung in palaces; because people thought the Buddha needed a lotus throne, lotus flowers bloomed beneath his knees; because people thought Guanyin should hold a jade vase with willow branches, Guanyin always holds a white vase. Similarly, because intelligent creatures thought "the lord should have a confidant," Han Qianling readily created one.

For the same reason, the Lord of Shenxue Palace was also powerful, majestic, dignified, fair, discerning, and aloof... With such a perfect lord, it was no wonder he unified the North so quickly. But even such a lord seemed like someone out of a painting.

He does what the world expects him to do, and he abides by the tacit treaties among the world. Those who are close to him obey his unfathomable nature, and those who are far away from him feel stable and secure under his rule. But if he is not happy with everything he has, and is not satisfied with everything he has obtained by doing what others expect and abiding by the rules of the world, then what has he been doing all this time?

At some point in the future, Wu Ting will boldly ask this question.

"Palace Master, the Northland is completely within your control, but I have yet to see you drink one more glass of wine, speak one more word, or show even a hint of indulgence... If it can't bring you even a shred of happiness, then what's the point of having the Northland?"

Han Qianling gestured for him to listen to the voice from the sky.

Wu Ting focused on doing what he was told, but unfortunately, he didn't get a single word of result from Tian until he heard a ringing in his ears.

"Something is about to begin. Before that, I need the identity of the Lord of the North."

Even after thinking about everything that had happened to the Lord of Shenxue Palace recently, Wu Ting still couldn't figure out what could be so special.

"I've searched all over the Suzaku Realm. If he's not here, then he must be outside."

The young Palace Master skipped over a large portion of the plan and simply said, "After I leave on behalf of the Suzaku Realm, I might be able to run into him in this bustling scene."

Wu Ting took a long time to figure out what Han Qianling meant. He exclaimed, "You said you became the Lord of the North just to find someone?"

"This identity is just a foundation." Han Qianling corrected casually: "Before we met, everything I did was to find him. After I meet him again..."
