Chapter 99 Bitter Tea

Su Yan crouched down and untied the reins from the hunting dog.

As soon as they were untied, the hunting dogs rushed into the house like wild horses, sniffing around everywhere.

Professional tasks should be handled by professional dogs.

A short while later, the hunting dog crouched at the corner of the wall at the foot of the bed and started rummaging around with its paws.

It was a dark corner, easily overlooked because it was hidden by the bed frame.

Soon, the hound seemed to have pulled something out of the dark corner, and came running over, wagging its tail and eager to show off, with the dark thing in its mouth.

As a reward, Su Yan tossed a large bone to the hunting dog.

Upon seeing this, the hunting dog immediately placed what it was holding in Su Yan's hand and began to happily gnaw on the bone on the ground, looking incredibly greedy.

Su Yan examined the piece of ebony in her hand. It must have been in a sealed environment, which caused the wood to turn black, and the smell it emitted was even stronger than the one she had picked up.

Just as Su Yan had guessed, although the puppet had turned black, its facial features remained lifelike, indistinguishable from Yan Shuo's.

Xie Yu looked at the puppet in Su Yan's hand with great curiosity, as if he wanted to observe it more closely. He took it from Su Yan's hand and prepared to put it under his nose to smell it carefully.

Unexpectedly, Su Yan stopped him first, saying, "Dean Xie, one cannot smell the ebony for too long. Smelling it for too long can lead to hallucinations and mental instability."

Upon hearing this, Xie Yu immediately became alarmed and threw the item back into Su Yan's hands, asking, "Why is this thing so strange?"

Su Yan nodded, "Of course, the world is full of wonders..."

"Could this thing be the culprit that caused Yan Shuo to hallucinate and be scared to death?"

"It should be this kind of thing, but ebony isn't a potent poison that takes effect immediately upon smelling. You'd have to wear it on your body for a long time for it to cause noticeable symptoms."

Xie Yu listened to Su Yan's words thoughtfully, "If that's really the case, then this puppet wasn't deliberately left behind by the murderer on the day Meng Heng died, but rather it was worn on his body for a long time."

Su Yan agreed with Xie Yu's opinion, "That's right, it will take at least more than three months to achieve the desired effect."

"This case is getting more and more interesting..."

Xie Yu's lips curled into a meaningful smile, his eyes revealing a deep interest.

Having come across such an interesting case, Xie Yu was determined to find out the truth.

However, at this moment, Su Yan felt uneasy.

Others she already considered suspicious individuals with cases against them.

If we're talking about people who wish they could kill Meng Heng and Yan Shuo, Su Yan can't think of anyone other than Leng Qiuling.

At this moment, Su Yan hesitated.

If the murderer really is Leng Qiuling, Su Yan really doesn't know how to face her.

Su Yan had promised Leng Qiuling to get justice for her, which now seems so ridiculous.

Xie Yu noticed Su Yan was lost in thought and reached out to poke her arm. "What's wrong? Why are you so absent-minded?"

"I think... I know who the murderer is."

As soon as Su Yan finished speaking, Xie Yu's eyes widened in surprise, "No way? Didn't you say that the art of sculpting human figures had been lost? How did you know who the murderer was so quickly?"

"Professor Xie, have you forgotten the Ghost Market? You can find anything in the Ghost Market that no one in this world dares to sell openly."

Upon hearing this, Xie Yu slapped his thigh and exclaimed, "How could I forget about the Ghost Market? But after our last big commotion, it's probably moved to a different location now. Finding any clues there will be harder than climbing to heaven."

Upon thinking of this, Xie Yu's face fell.

Su Yan shook her head, "We're not going to the Ghost Market, we're going to the Yan residence."

Xie Yu looked puzzled. "Why go to the Yan residence?"

"Dean Xie, do you still remember Leng Qiuling?"

Xie Yu nodded. "Of course I remember. Isn't she Yan Shuo's concubine? You suspect she's the murderer?"

"I think that apart from her, there is no one in this world who would hate Yan Shuo and Meng Heng so much that they wish they could kill them."

Xie Yu had heard Su Yan recount Leng Qiuling's ordeal, and based on the current evidence, Leng Qiuling was indeed the most suspicious person.

After thinking it over, the two returned to the Yan residence and arrived at the gate of the small courtyard where Leng Qiuling lived.

Su Yan stared at the tightly closed door, her expression full of hesitation.

Xie Yu could see why Su Yan hesitated. To be honest, since he entered the Surveillance Bureau, he had seen countless cases of families being destroyed and people dying.

Even the most passionate heart can be chilled and become utterly numb.

The Su Yan he had met was different; she was always filled with compassion for her victims.

“Su Yan, put away your sentimentality. What you need to do is uphold the dignity of the law. You should know that the duty of investigating cases is to give the deceased the truth.”

After listening, Su Yan sighed deeply, as if she had made a choice in her heart.

She stepped forward and knocked on the door.

Soon, the door opened a crack, and a familiar face appeared before Su Yan.

The head maid who had bullied Leng Qiuling peeked out from the crack in the door, her face bruised and swollen, her chubby face resembling a pig's head, and sized up the two people standing at the door.

Who are you?

Shen Yao was extremely ruthless; Su Yan almost didn't recognize him.

Xie Yu decisively showed his badge, "I'm from the Surveillance Bureau, responsible for tracking down the murderer of Prince Yan. Please cooperate with our investigation."

Upon hearing this, the head maid panicked. "Sir, you must have misunderstood. I am just an old maid in charge of taking care of Concubine Leng in the Yan household. Young Master Yan is not under my jurisdiction."

Xie Yu's voice was icy as he said sternly, "No matter who it is, as long as they are from the Yan family, they must accept the investigation by the Oversight Council."

After saying that, Xie Yu turned his head and winked at the few yamen runners he had brought with him.

The two instantly understood each other and stepped forward to restrain the head maid, otherwise she might talk too much in front of Yan Hong.

Su Yan probably hadn't even gotten the full story from Leng Qiuling before she was taken into custody by the Yan family, since Yan Hong had the guts to kill Leng Qiuling.

After the head maid left, the two went into the courtyard.

At this moment, Leng Qiuling was sitting in the courtyard drinking tea, her expression gentle and virtuous, exuding maternal love as she lovingly stroked her slightly protruding belly, looking serene and content.

Su Yan felt that Leng Qiuling this time seemed to be a completely different person from the last time.

"You've arrived!"

Leng Qiuling suddenly spoke, her gaze never leaving the brightly colored camellias in front of her, not even glancing at Su Yan, yet she was not at all surprised by their arrival.

"Miss Leng, I think you should know why we've come to find you!"

Leng Qiuling smiled, her face full of sincerity, "I know..."

Su Yan was somewhat surprised by Leng Qiuling's frankness.

Before Su Yan could speak, Leng Qiuling picked up a teacup, poured two cups, and placed them on the table. She then took a small sip of the tea she hadn't finished drinking.

Su Yan and Xie Yu looked at each other, not knowing what Leng Qiuling was up to, but they each went forward and sat around the stove, taking a few sips of tea.

A bitter taste lingered in my mouth, similar to the taste of Coptis chinensis.

Su Yan's tongue was so bitter from the tea that she lost her sense of taste, and she frowned involuntarily, but she still swallowed it despite the discomfort, while Xie Yu spat it all out.
