Chapter 33
On the day the college entrance exam results were announced, the air was filled with a mixture of anxiety and anticipation. Su Rui sat at his computer, his fingers cold and his heart beating so fast it threatened to burst from his chest. The moment he clicked the search button, he practically held his breath.
When the score clearly appeared on the screen, he froze, checking it several times over—a number far beyond his usual mock exam scores, a number he hadn't even imagined. Then, almost subconsciously, he immediately called Ling Yao. When he heard their scores were so close, the difference so minimal, he was instantly overwhelmed by a surge of unreal joy.
They got similar scores! This means...
"What are you daydreaming about?" Ling Yao's voice came through the phone with his usual laziness. One hand casually rested on the back of his chair, leaning over to look at the screen. Hearing the score, he raised an eyebrow and let out an ambiguous chuckle: "Tsk, not bad."
Su Rui's cheeks flushed with excitement, her eyes brightened surprisingly, yet she was a little timid and uncertain: "Ling Yao... I, I didn't expect to get so many points in the exam... right..."
"What is it?" Ling Yao's usual playfulness faded, and his tone became a little different. "You did the questions yourself, you answered the test yourself, and this score is what you deserve."
Su Rui listened to the voice coming from the phone in a daze.
Ling Yao's tone was unusually sincere, almost candid. "You're not stupid, it's just that no one has ever explained things to you properly before. Plus, you're meticulous and willing to put in the effort, so you remember things well." He paused, as if stating a perfectly natural fact. His voice was low, but every word pierced Su Rui's heart. "So, don't always think it's just luck. You're smart and hardworking, Su Rui. You're the best."
——“You’re the best.”
These four simple words, uttered by Ling Yao, carried a tremendous weight, piercing Su Rui's heart. A surge of warmth quickly washed away all his anxiety and self-doubt. His nose felt an uncontrollable soreness, and his eyes quickly reddened. He hurriedly lowered his head, his fingers unconsciously clenching around his phone. His throat choked with sobs, unable to utter a single word, he could only nod vigorously.
Ling Yao seemed a little uncomfortable when he heard that he was about to cry. He changed the subject and his tone returned to his previous casual tone: "Okay, hurry up and see which major you want to apply for." But the slightly raised corners of his mouth revealed that he was really happy for Su Rui, which was not easy to detect.
In the end, both of them filled in the same university on their application forms, word for word.
The acceptance letter arrived as expected. When it came time to pay his tuition, Su Rui solemnly pulled out the long-laid bank card containing the money from his "lucky" lottery win. He carefully checked the amount and then solemnly transferred it to complete the payment.
Looking at the successful operation interface, he breathed a long, gentle sigh of relief. This money, carrying Ling Yao's deliberate "luck" and heartache, had, in this way, become the first cornerstone towards their shared future. This made him feel incredibly at ease, and filled with indescribable gratitude and happiness.
Outside the window, the summer sun was shining brightly, illuminating the brand new university life that was about to begin. And beside him was the person he loved, and the future they were about to embark on together.
