Chapter 22
"Hurry up and write, everyone! Come on!" Yin Li waved the folder in her hand fiercely, and turned to Lu Bai and emphasized, "I let you two rest yesterday, so you two have to make up for yesterday's work today!"
Lu Bai said with a bitter face: "You can't do this to me. I won honor for the class yesterday. You can't just abandon me!"
Yesterday afternoon, Lu Bai participated in the relay as usual. Due to his outstanding performance that morning, Guan Yue had him run the final leg. Perhaps influenced by Lu Bai, the others didn't want to just go through the motions and gave their best. Class One, for once, showed a competitive spirit beyond academics. With everyone working together, they even reached the finish line at the same time as the other class, securing a tie for first place.
"You've worked hard on the field, but those of us without projects haven't been idle either." Yin Li said as she took out another small stack of A4 paper. "Class 2 is determined to compete with our class for the Spiritual Civilization Award this year. They wrote a lot of manuscripts and didn't send them in yesterday, just to make us relax and catch us off guard. When I went to deliver the manuscripts today, I saw that Class 2 had a huge pile. If we don't work overtime today, we won't catch up with them!"
"I'm back." Han Chengcheng and a few other people had just gone to deliver a cheering article and gather "military intelligence" by the way.
"How is it?" Yin Li hurried forward.
"Right now, Class 2 has submitted the most, followed by our class," Han Chengcheng said. "But now we have so many submissions that when the student union reviewed them, they found a lot of duplicate content. Now they have a requirement that any duplicate content will be rejected, and if found, they will be sent back for rewriting."
"Tsk, it's all Class 2's fault," Yin Li said indignantly. "Don't worry, we can still beat them by ten blocks with our quality."
"It's inevitable that similarities will appear in a cheering article..." Lu Bai didn't quite understand. "With only a few projects, how can you write something brilliant?"
"It doesn't have to be just about the athletes." Han Chengcheng had already started writing. "You can also write to the volunteers, the cheerleaders, the referees, the teachers in each class, and anyone who has appeared in a program."
"In that case, we can also write to the organizing committee..." Zhang Xiaotian murmured beside him.
"Sure thing!" Yin Li wrote with a flourish, "Write now!"
"That's all fine..." Lu Bai originally wanted to take Zhang Xiaotian with him to cheat, but he didn't expect that Zhang Xiaotian had already written it down. He scratched his head and felt embarrassed to rest alone.
The battle raged on the field, but in the stands, each class saw a different scene. The regular and specialty classes were playing enthusiastically, while the experimental classes were wielding their pens with fervor. This was clearly a battle unique to the experimental classes, with Classes One and Two showing the strongest fighting spirit.
"Oh, you're still writing?"
Class One was happily writing when they suddenly heard voices. A classmate sitting nearby looked up and saw that it was volunteers from Class Two who were collecting garbage and happened to be passing by.
"How many points can you get just by writing this?" the man patted the "Volunteer" armband on his arm. "With such a stubborn mind that only cares about studying, no wonder you only got the Spiritual Civilization Award."
"Oh yeah, at this rate, I'm afraid we'll even lose the Spiritual Civilization Award this year!"
"Damn it!" Li An, who was playing games and writing a manuscript at the same time, threw his pen in anger upon hearing this. "If you have the guts, score higher than my class in the next monthly exam!"
"Yoyoyo is angry!"
The students from Class 2 walked off laughing. Li An slammed his hand on the table and sat down. "I'm not going to write anymore. Who cares about the Spiritual Civilization Award?"
"Ang Lee, you gave up first without even thinking about how to win!" Some students were unhappy, and some didn't want to write like Ang Lee.
"Should our class send more volunteers? Send a few more people to take some photos and then send them back to the Student Union." Han Chengcheng asked Yin Li.
"How about this? We'll go out and pick up trash according to the order of our study groups, starting with the first group. Each group will have someone take photos, and we'll all post the photos here." Yin Li habitually gave orders, and finally asked Li An, "Is this arrangement okay with me, squad leader?"
"Okay, let's do it." Li An jumped up and said, "First group, follow me!"
As Zhang Xiaotian wrote, he secretly asked Lu Bai, "Is Yin Li also a class leader? An organization committee member?"
"She's not a class leader." Lu Bai was amused when he heard this. "Our class doesn't have an organization committee member."
"No organizing committee member?"
"Not only do we not have an organizing committee member in our class, we don't have many other positions either," Lu Bai explained. "When there's an activity, it's usually just whoever the class teacher asks to organize it, or whoever gets fed up and starts it. Li An usually only takes action when the situation strikes him, and doesn't care about anyone else. And Yin Li, on the other hand, is the type who gets fed up."
"Yin Li had criticized Li An before for not meddling in other people's affairs, but Li An turned around and accused Yin Li of meddling in other people's affairs, which really pissed Yin Li off. But she still meddled next time."
"I see many people in the class listen to Yin Li." Zhang Xiaotian looked at Yin Li.
"Not everyone is like Ang Lee...who doesn't know what's good for him." Lu Bai shook his head.
The last day of the sports meet was unusually busy. It was not until the afternoon when the Student Union announced that they would begin counting the points of each class that Zhang Xiaotian and Lu Bai followed the last group to pick up trash.
The sports meet was drawing to a close, and the trash on the school grounds had been mostly picked up by volunteers from each class. Their group's job was just to pick up fallen leaves and scraps of paper, a fairly easy task. Lu Bai, dragging an empty snakeskin bag and picking up a stick, walked to a deserted spot and began swinging it, making a rustling sound.
"Tian'er!" He called out to Zhang Xiaotian who was picking up pieces of paper in front. Zhang Xiaotian turned around to look at him, and he used a tree stick to make a sword flower in a very realistic manner.
"Two moves!"
"You're sick." Zhang Xiaotian stood still, "Don't hit anyone else."
"Tsk, you won't even play with me." Lu Bai shrugged and put the stick on his shoulder. "What are you picking up? The ground looks clean and there's nothing there."
"I picked up everything in the front, so of course you couldn't see anything in the back."
"Then you take a break and let me pick up some." Lu Bai quickly took a few steps to catch up with Zhang Xiaotian, stuffed the stick into Zhang Xiaotian's hand, and reminded him, "Hold it well, don't lose it."
Zhang Xiaotian was a little disgusted with the dirty wooden stick with a handle, but in the end he still held it well and didn't throw it away.
The last group, seemingly out for a stroll, only brought back half a bag of trash. After dropping it off at the school's garbage station, they returned to their classrooms just in time for the podium to announce the rankings for the previous two days. Class 1, also in the first year, had taken first place, and when the second year rankings were announced, everyone felt a surge of trepidation. The reading went from lowest to highest, and the silence grew as they reached the third place, so quiet that you could almost hear a pin drop. Only Class 1 and Class 2 remained.
"Second place..." The school radio station was quite old, and while it would occasionally work, it hadn't. It hadn't happened yet. Everyone was stunned, and some, anxiously, couldn't help but curse. As if to deliberately whet everyone's appetite, the next moment the principal's voice came over the radio again: "First place is..."
"Damn, I wasn't even nervous!" Lu Yibo's recognizable voice rang out from Class 2, and many of the students who had been hanging on their heels burst out laughing. Zhang Xiaotian had been working hard all day, so it was inevitable that he was a little anxious at the moment.
As if he had the students' full attention, the principal slowly continued to read: "First place, Class 1!"
The air froze for a moment, then erupted in huge cheers. The students in Class 2 were indignant, and someone shouted at Class 1, "I'll show you what I can do next month!"
"What can you show us, you defeated general!" If Li An had the ability to hold his tail high, he might have been so proud of it. He even brought a few people to show off in front of the second team, which made his good friends in the second team laugh and scold him back.
"It's not enough for him to brag about." Yin Li turned her back to him and rolled her eyes, but it was clear she was also very happy. Lu Bai packed his things and sighed, "Holding a sports meeting is really tiring, even more tiring than attending class."
"Then we will have a sports meet next year and you can go back to class," Yin Li said.
"That's still not the case." Lu Bai smiled, "You guys would be so bored without me."
"How shameless!" the four of them joked as they cleaned up. Li An finally did what a class monitor should do and started organizing everyone to move the tables and chairs back to the classroom. The sports meet finally came to an end.
Before school was over, Zhang Xiaotian received a call from his mother, saying that she had to go on a business trip for a month and was already at the airport. She would not be able to take him to school, so she asked if she could send one of her subordinates to take care of him. Zhang Xiaotian felt that he did not need it, so he directly refused. His mother did not say anything, but just told him to take good care of himself and call her if he had any problems. Zhang Xiaotian let out a long sigh after hanging up the phone. Lu Bai saw that he had finished the call and came over to ask him, "How are you going to get home?"
"Walk back." Zhang Xiaotian answered him.
"Then let's go together." Lu Bai said as he put on his schoolbag.
This time, Lu Bai didn't take him around through the narrow alleys, and Zhang Xiaotian actually felt a bit disappointed. The alleys there were too many and too chaotic. Yesterday, Zhang Xiaotian was bored at home alone and wanted to go downstairs for a walk. Without a guide, he nearly got lost in that old neighborhood. It wasn't nearly as fun as the walk he'd had with Lu Bai that day. But this main road was also nice, wide and bustling. Even if you didn't talk, you wouldn't be bored because the sound of conversation was everywhere, and you could easily overhear someone's gossip...
Lu Bai suppressed his laughter, tugging at the corner of Zhang Xiaotian's clothes, his attention focused on his ears. Zhang Xiaotian was dragged by him, walking slower and slower, and had to pretend that nothing had happened. When he was not paying attention while going down the stairs, he almost slipped directly. Lu Bai quickly pulled him, and by the time they were standing, Bagua had already walked away.
"What a pity." Lu Bai looked regretful. "I was just about to hear the exciting part."
"You've done it." Zhang Xiaotian wanted to slap him on the head. "If you're so engrossed in listening, why don't you go to someone's house and listen?"
"I can't come to my house. That would be too presumptuous." Lu Bai shook his head.
"You're not being presumptuous now?"
"I wasn't the only one who heard it!" Lu Bai boasted. "Besides, I won't tell anyone. I don't even know him."
Taking the main road home would be much faster, and soon Zhang Xiaotian saw familiar buildings in the distance. He suddenly felt that this road was too short.
"My mother is on a business trip," he said.
"Yeah." Lu Bai nodded, "So?"
"One month." Zhang Xiaotian said, "So I will go home alone for this month."
Lu Bai said "Oh" and smiled, "Then we can go home together later."
Zhang Xiaotian looked at him when he heard that.
"Going home alone is not as fun as going home with someone else," Lu Bai said.
Zhang Xiaotian withdrew his gaze.
Indeed, it is more interesting when two people are together.
