Chapter 105 "...You will take the exam with the third grade this winter?"
Compared to the slow-moving Edith, Palmer's opponents in the first two rounds seemed more impatient.
After the principal said the word "compensation", the two stood up quickly, but stopped before going on stage to let Edith go first. Edith sighed, walked around the boy in the front, and walked to the stage.
And let her be the leader.
The principal first gave the two opponents in the first and second rounds corresponding compensation - he allowed the third-year student to skip the preliminary and promotion rounds in the fifth grade and participate in the finals again; he wrote a letter of introduction for the fourth-year student, praising him in the name of Beaujolais College.
The former is obviously not as strong as the latter, and is the student who would lose even without the influence of the luck potion. It is very reasonable for him to be allocated such compensation.
After comforting the two students, the principal turned his gaze to Edith in the distance.
The most troublesome existence appeared.
She did not lose the competition, so the first student's compensation could not be used for her; she was still a freshman, and there were still four years before she graduated and chose a career, so it was too early to give her compensation such as a letter of introduction.
Different teachers gave different suggestions on the compensation: some thought that Edith was just a commoner and did not need to be compensated too well; but others thought that because she was a commoner, no matter what kind of compensation the college gave, it would not have much impact, so it would be better to give generous rewards to show the college's attitude to the outside world.
A short half-day discussion was not enough to find a suitable result. After intense discussion, everyone reluctantly made the final decision - to let Edith choose compensation herself.
"You can ask for the same recommendation letter, or you can choose other learning-related rewards, such as the number of times you enter the internal library, the use of the laboratory time." The principal read out the results of the discussion, but gave quite a lot of qualifiers, "It does not involve titles, money, and it cannot harm the interests of other students and teachers, or undermine fairness within the college. Other than that, you can choose the compensation yourself."
Joyce, who was sitting in the audience, sneered.
It really fits her perception of that group of people.
It seems that they have given the right to choose to Edith, but in fact they don't want to take any responsibility at all. If the other party takes the initiative to choose less, it is in line with their wishes. If they choose more, they can stay out of it and sigh "greed".
I just don't know whether Edith wants benefits or fame.
"...I want to join another laboratory as an assistant." Edith thought for a few seconds and looked up, "I want to learn potions."
After these words were spoken, the auditorium fell into silence for a short time.
This choice was beyond the principal's expectations. He paused and asked with some difficulty: "Do you want to serve as an assistant as well?"
Edith's eyes wandered, and she deliberately ignored the unhappy look from Dean Keith. Then she stretched out her hand, pointed at the badge on her collar, and looked directly at the principal: "Yes, I would like to be an assistant as well."
"Okay." Although the principal didn't understand, he still responded quickly.
If it was an ordinary student, he could understand this choice - with assistant experience, he could stand out directly in the association's selection process. But Edith was already Dean Keith's assistant, and taking on the concurrent position would not be proportional to the effort she put in.
He was just about to ask the Dean of Pharmacy to place Edith in his laboratory, but the Dean stood up and arranged Edith's place first: "Then you can join Professor Scott's laboratory. It just so happens that he is the only one who has never hired an assistant."
What a joke! Someone who has already worked as Keith's assistant wants to be a pharmacy assistant. Isn't it just because he values the fact that students who study pharmacy generally come from prominent families?
Then he would let her wish go unfulfilled!
"Professor Scott and Griffin should have a lot in common." He looked towards Shelly with a smile, his tone a little superior, "How is it? Any comments?"
He had never approved of civilians learning about potions. After this incident, he learned that this person was the only one in the entire academy who knew the formula of the luck potion like himself, and he became even angrier.
How can he deserve it!
Unexpectedly, Shelly did not show an expression of humiliation as he had expected. Instead, he raised his eyebrows and accepted the arrangement calmly: "Thank you, Dean."
Dean of Pharmacy: “?”
Why did he feel that the ending tone of this person's sentences rose slightly?
He turned his head and looked inquiringly, but Shelly's expression remained the same as always, and he quickly lowered his head, as if he didn't care.
Edith breathed a sigh of relief: it was pretty much what she expected.
Considering the dean's hostility towards Shelly and the current composition of the pharmacy professor's laboratory, if nothing unexpected happens, she will definitely be assigned to Shelly's laboratory. In this way, she can also discuss problems with others openly in the future.
…With two assistant tasks, daily investigation and study, and preparation for the last few league games, she may not have the energy to review—or prepare for—this year’s winter assessment.
It was quite distressing for her that she didn't get the top few in the final exam and didn't get the qualification to read in the internal library.
If only I could take one or two exams...
She thought randomly, thanked the principal casually, walked off the stage and sat for a while, listening to the long-winded summary of the experience, and finally announced the end of the meeting. She breathed a sigh of relief, feeling that the busy day was finally over, and she didn't even have time to say hello to Shelly, and immediately hurried to the dormitory.
She had to check something with Mulin.
But the discussions on the way back to the dormitory today were particularly harsh.
Edith frowned and tried to ignore the voice in her ear. After the meeting, many people were still discussing the Palmer incident, and the topic diverged faster and faster, almost deviating from the essence of the matter.
In the end, someone even stood up for no apparent reason and stopped Edith on the roadside.
"Did you really win the game under the influence of the luck potion?" The man took a deep breath and looked directly into Edith's eyes and asked, "It is said that the luck potion has irresistible properties. It shouldn't just cause people to fall."
Edith wanted to fend him off with a few words, but after hearing his words, she gradually stopped.
"...You think I cheated too?" She didn't bother to beat around the bush and directly pointed out the meaning behind the man's words.
The boy's face changed, and he became a little angry for some reason: "I heard that you knew in advance that Palmer would use the luck potion - you knew it in advance but didn't report it to the college, you must have had other tricks up your sleeve."
“I have reasonable doubts.”
Edith yawned, glanced down at the book in the boy's hand, and said calmly, "Major in Potions?"
"You were in your third year, and you wanted to be a teacher's assistant. You had your eyes on Professor Scott, but I got him first. You had no place to vent your anger, so you could only slander him like this?"
The boy's expression became more and more gloomy as Edith spoke more deeply.
"Isn't it?" He sneered. "Let's not talk about anything else. You just started your potion enlightenment this year, right? I started learning potions when I was five years old. I have been learning for almost thirteen years. My knowledge reserves are much higher than yours."
"The college gives you a chance to freely choose compensation, but it is not a reason for you to realize your selfish desires and seize other people's resources."
Edith found it somewhat novel.
Her free choice seemed insignificant to the school and was in line with their expectations, but in the eyes of this boy, it was a sign of lack of etiquette and excessive demands.
She paused.
"You're sick." In the few seconds of pause, several voices came from the side, all of which were contemptuous of that person, "You have studied potions for thirteen years and still haven't been selected as an assistant. Is it because you don't want to?"
"What's the point of competing with others... You can't even be number one in your grade, so even if it's your turn to select assistants in the third grade, it won't be your turn."
"One moment you say that someone just started learning potions this year, and the next moment you suspect that someone got the luck potion and cheated. Don't you think that's contradictory?"
Edith was somewhat surprised that those who seemed to be passing by casually all stopped and cursed.
I didn't expect so many people would help speak up this time.
She tapped her chest with her fingers to express her gratitude to the few people who spoke up, then turned around and faced the boy whose face was already flushed, and suddenly she thought of a good idea.
"Well," she said with a smile on her face, "Since you think I have no real talent, being an assistant would only hinder the professor's research progress..."
"How about I use your third-year papers for this year's winter exam?"
She looked calm and spoke casually, as if it was a non-trivial matter: "Since you doubt my ability in pharmacy, then I will take the same test as those of you who chose pharmacy - my name will be hidden and graded, and I will be ranked and rewarded together with the third graders, and the final score will be included in the student file."
"Is this okay?"
It was quiet all around.
The people who were helping Edith to speak up were also unable to utter a single word. They exchanged horrified glances and stepped forward to hold back the first-year student who had spoken outrageously: "Okay, okay, we know he has wronged you, there is no need to be angry."
Edith: “?”
Edith: "I'm not angry."
She would never make a boast just out of anger. She made this suggestion because she really thought so: on the one hand, she only had to review the potions she was most familiar with, which greatly reduced the pressure; on the other hand, she could suppress the inexplicable doubts and reduce the possibility of being talked about behind her back; on the other hand, she would be ranked together with the third grade. The first place in the first grade would be vacant and taken by Tuttle or Bell, and Amy could move up to third place, which was equivalent to picking up three library opportunities for nothing.
Since the opportunities for a grade are fixed, can't we just grab opportunities from other grades?
She really thought this approach would work.
The boy was also frightened by her shocking remarks. Although he thought she was joking, he couldn't even say anything harsh for a moment: "...The principal won't allow it."
Edith said sincerely, "There is nothing in the school rules that forbids students of different grades from taking cross-examinations."
Boy: "How can there be no such thing in the school rules?"
Edith: "Trust me, I have copied it by hand more than forty times and I have memorized it by heart."
Before the onlookers around could understand the meaning of "more than forty times", Edith had already forcibly pulled the boy's sleeve and walked towards the auditorium where the reminiscence had just ended.
"The principal should not have left yet." She said sincerely, "You can go ask him yourself."
......
"So, it's settled?" Bell said with a hint of disbelief, "...You're going to take the exam with the third grade this winter?"
"Yeah." Edith was in a good mood. "Finally I don't have to review the lengthy Warcraft manual!"
