Chapter 4: The light coming from their house!
"What are you still standing there for? Go in and find someone!" Gray finally reacted. He let out a cry, released the restraints on his feet, left his assistant behind, and ran towards the slums.
The assistant finally recovered from the extreme shock and started running. He slipped and fell because he was not paying attention. "Didn't you say that I would be stripped naked in a second if I went in like this?" He shouted hysterically, and struggled to get up from the ground and keep up with the pace of the person in front of him, "Why are you in such a hurry now?"
"I used to think that losing property was a big deal," Gray said sincerely, "but now, compared to that once-in-a-century gifted person, the loss you might suffer is nothing."
He had never seen magic so pure and abundant before. Even his mentor during his apprenticeship could not cast spells of this level.
After hearing the boss's merciless disgust, the assistant cursed loudly and ran towards the direction where the light beam disappeared without hesitation.
He had long been dissatisfied with the fact that all mages were nobles. Now that he had finally seen a glimmer of hope for the common people, he had to seize it no matter what.
…
Edith was startled by the noise she made.
She looked at her hands in confusion. Having finally experienced the magic herself, she finally had some vague concept of this thing and knew how it worked, but she was still shocked by this posture that was obviously beyond common sense.
When Shelly first tried to use magic... was it such a big deal?
She lowered her head and checked her sister's physical condition. Her frown relaxed, the blush on her face faded, and the frostbite and wounds on her body all healed, even the scars were reduced to shallow marks.
This level of therapeutic effect cannot be simply described as “good”.
Edith swallowed, a possibility she had never considered before came to her mind, becoming stronger and stronger, leaving her with no energy to think about anything else.
Could it be that I was reincarnated into a person with extraordinary talent?
She looked at her hands. This body must have used magic for the first time, and she cast the spell without a wand. However, there was no trace of burns on her hands, which showed that she had a high tolerance for magic and was not easily injured. Moreover, without any training, she could cast such a perfect high-level healing spell without feeling tired, which showed that her magic reserve was quite sufficient.
These two items basically determine the upper limit of a mage, and her qualities in these two items are perfect.
"So, I now have an extremely high talent for magic, and more theoretical knowledge than most wizards..." Edith muttered to herself.
From this perspective, it was only a matter of time before she returned to the capital. She was only 15 years old, and the thing she had the most was time.
She lowered her head again, looked at the reflection in the pottery jar, and cast a healing spell on herself.
The scars and frostbite disappeared, and her eyes and eyebrows finally showed some vitality that a 15-year-old girl should have. She touched this face that did not belong to her, and the heaviness in her heart did not alleviate the slightest because of the discovery of her talent.
A girl who should have had a bright life ended up sleeping forever on a winter night, and another girl had never had a good day since she was born. And the source of all this was simply the nobles' unreasonable venting of anger.
"I will take care of everything." She lowered her eyes and said to herself in the water, "I will take good care of my sister, and I will also take care of that noble family that killed people indiscriminately."
But that is a matter for the future. What matters most to her now is to ensure that her sister and herself survive.
…
Doreen felt the long-lost warmth.
It's not just warm, but also relaxed and comfortable, as if all the pain in the body has disappeared and the whole person is immersed in the summer river water.
She opened her eyes dazedly, and the dazzling firelight immediately stung her eyes. She let out a soft cry, and a hand suddenly appeared in front of her and covered her face.
"Awake?" A familiar voice sounded from above. Doreen realized belatedly that she was in Edith's arms. She quickly pressed her face against the warm neck in front of her, rubbed it, and called her sister sweetly.
For this girl who has never experienced a few days of good life since she was born, staying with her sister is the happiest thing in the world.
Edith waited for Doreen to adjust for a while before releasing her hand, picking up the broken bowl on the ground and scooping something from the clay pot in the center of the brazier. She didn't dare to feed Doreen while she was sleeping, fearing that she would choke, so she only fed her some water, and finally waited until she woke up naturally.
While Doreen was sleeping, Edith confirmed that she could cast the spell, so she made drastic changes to the home environment, lit a fire to boil water, mended her and her sister's torn cotton clothes, and even gave birth to a small tree on the spot in an attempt to make her own firewood.
Unfortunately, the tree only reached her knee height before it used up all her magic power, and the potatoes were frozen and could not be used as seeds to grow. Her beautiful wish of staying indoors through the winter was shattered, and she had to find another way out.
The potatoes were stewed soft by the combined effects of magic and hot water. Edith used the branches that had been created to mash the potatoes and mixed them with a large amount of water, barely serving as a filling porridge.
She had never drunk such simple porridge before. It was so thin that a person's reflection could be seen in it. There was no salt, butter or pepper added. When she drank it, it still had an earthy smell that was hard to get rid of.
But Doreen's eyes still lit up when she saw the food.
The aroma of the porridge kept entering her nose, and she instantly woke up, her saliva was about to flow out with greed.
Porridge! Warm porridge that won't hurt your teeth and flows down your throat into your stomach! Cooking food takes too much firewood, and she hasn't had hot food for a long time.
Seeing the sparkling eyes of the person in her arms, and her obviously very hungry but still obediently waiting for food, Edith sighed and rubbed Doreen's head: "Well, you will have porridge today, and you will have porridge every day in the future."
The conditions were simple, there was no spoon, Edith could only tilt the edge of the bowl and let Doreen drink from the side without cracks. Even though it had been there for a while, the contents of the bowl were still very hot, and Doreen couldn't stop inhaling after drinking it, but she was reluctant to move her mouth away.
"Okay, that's enough." It's not suitable for someone who has just recovered from a serious illness to eat too much. Edith thought that was about right and put the bowl back on the ground.
Doreen looked at the bowl reluctantly, but she was sensible and didn't make a fuss. She just stayed in Edith's arms and didn't move. "Did sister drink it?" She suddenly remembered and looked back at Edith.
"I've eaten." Edith's body was still not suited to eating too much at once. She gently stirred the contents of the jar and looked at the remaining food in the corner - and the amount for two meals for the two of them.
That means that by this time tomorrow, she will have to find a new source of food.
It’s okay. Now that I can use magic, it won’t be difficult to get through this winter.
Edith was looking up in thought when she suddenly felt a vibration coming from the hem of her clothes. She looked down at her sister: the little girl was holding the hem of her clothes, looking at her eagerly, and her tone was a little hesitant: "Sister, why do you eat so well today?"
"Because Doreen is sick?"
After eating and drinking enough, and with sufficient nutrients supplied to her brain, Doreen finally realized that something was wrong today. Her sister, who used to be very careful with her budget, actually burned the bed, cooked the meal, and ate two days' worth of food in one meal. This kind of life that she had never dared to think about before now brought her great pressure.
She hesitantly said, "I feel much better now. There's no need to waste food because of me... There's still a month left in winter."
Edith looked at her sister's tense face and gently touched her head.
Doreen's hair is also blonde, and in order to make it easier to survive in the slums, she only keeps it a little longer than her ears. Unlike her straight hair, Doreen's hair is naturally curly, with fluffy curls and green eyes. If she is carefully raised from childhood and wears a beaming smile, everyone who sees her will definitely pinch her cheeks.
But now Doreen's cheeks are sunken, and although her skin has a little color, it is still frighteningly pale compared to normal people. Instead of smiling, she is afraid of eating a little more food.
"It's okay, sister found a way to get food."
She comforted her and lifted the corner of her sister's mouth with her finger: "Don't think too much, seven-year-old child. The most important thing for you now is to recover from your illness."
But after hearing what was said, the little girl's frown showed no sign of easing.
…Oh, I’m not someone who can be easily fooled.
Edith's plan to fool people was ruined, and after thinking it over, she decided to explain the truth to Doreen.
...Well, let her think about it, or just say that she suddenly realized how to use magic when she was on the verge of death?
Before she could think of a reasonable explanation, there was a sudden noise outside the room, which was particularly obvious on this winter day when no one went out. Edith's face changed, and she quickly put out the brazier, covered her sister's mouth, stepped back, and shrank into a corner far away from the door.
In such a cold day, people in the slums would move very carefully even if they wanted to go out to avoid excessive consumption of calories. The person who could make such a big scene is most likely an outsider.
In Little Edith's memory, most of these outsiders had bad intentions, and they should try to reduce the noise and pretend that no one was in the house. But generally speaking, these road robbers would not visit a place where there was obviously no property in the winter.
That leaves only one last possibility.
——Someone was attracted by the noise caused by the spell she just cast.
Edith was a little annoyed, she didn't expect that a simple treatment she performed would make such a loud noise, but thinking that the houses in this area were densely packed and the neighbors around had no windows, it was highly likely that the exact address would not be exposed, so she decided to play dumb to avoid this wave of searches.
After all, we don’t know what the other party is thinking, so it’s better to avoid a head-on confrontation.
Doreen calmed down the moment her sister covered her mouth, and she skillfully buried her head in Edith's chest and calmed her breathing. The two held their breath and listened to the sound getting closer and closer, and finally within the range where they could hear it clearly.
"Excuse me, who used the healing spell just now?"
really.
Edith held her breath and waited quietly for the questioning voice to fade away. Fortunately, as she expected, outsiders could not distinguish the location of her house from such a densely packed shack.
"——I know who used the healing spell!"
Before the man's voice completely disappeared, a woman's sharp shout suddenly came from the right front of Edith's house, "Give me the gold coins and I'll tell you!"
"Yes, give us gold coins!" A rough male voice came from the same direction, with an unstoppable swallowing sound, "One, no, at least three! Give us three and I'll tell you!"
Edith cursed inwardly.
She quickly put Doreen down, went to the door, and looked out through the gap. In the shed across the street, two skinny heads squeezed out from the crack of the door, and their undisguised greedy eyes shot to the right. Edith turned slightly and followed their line of sight. She understood clearly - the two people who were walking and shouting were wearing exquisitely tailored winter clothes, and one of them even had a golden brooch, which showed that they were rich people.
These two men were like two fat sheep waiting to be slaughtered, with golden fat flowing in the eyes of the starving people.
"Which one?" The man with the golden brooch turned around and decisively took out three gold coins from his pocket. He casually threw the things up, and the gold coins collided in the air, making a crisp sound.
The greedy eyes of the two men followed the gold coins as they jumped up and down.
Edith had an impression of the couple. They never worked honestly or picked up trash. They lived by stealing and bullying children. The food that little Edith brought home was snatched away by the man several times. She could not beat him and could only swallow her anger.
She glanced at the two people's erratic eyes and felt relieved. Fortunately, they probably didn't know who released the beam of light and were just trying to cheat some money.
Then she is still safe -
“——That’s the one!”
The woman didn't care about anything else for the moment. She just randomly drew her finger in the sky and pointed in the direction of Edith's house.
Edith: “…”
What the hell!
