Chapter 152 The Army Returns

Without the slightest hesitation, Qu Jingyun ran towards the battlefield.

The people around her looked at her with puzzled eyes, and some even tried to rush over to stop her, but she dodged them all.

Her unease grew stronger; she had to see Shen Yunting intact.

Fortunately, before even leaving the military camp, they heard cheers.

After a successful first battle, General Shen returned safely.

Hearing this sound, Qu Jingyun finally breathed a sigh of relief, but she still looked anxiously outside the tent, waiting for the army to return.

Only when Shen Yunting's figure appeared before her eyes did her heart finally settle down.

But the next moment, Qu Jingyun's smile froze.

Even from a great distance, she could feel the heavy atmosphere.

Shen Yunting's face was gloomy, his armor was covered in blood, and he was carrying a person on his back whose fate was unknown.

His imposing aura spread out, startling everyone and causing them to stop cheering.

They could only cautiously watch Shen Yunting enter the camp.

Qu Jingyun was startled and stared intently at the person Shen Yunting was carrying.

Could that person be Chen Song?

Realizing this, Qu Jingyun forcibly suppressed the panic in her heart, pretended to be calm, bypassed the soldiers in the camp, and followed Shen Yunting into the tent.

Seeing that Shen Yunting dismissed everyone, leaving only the military doctor, she hesitated for a moment before secretly sneaking into the tent and hiding in a corner when no one was looking.

Her eyes fell on the wounded man on the bed, and she finally breathed a sigh of relief after seeing his face clearly.

Fortunately, although the face was stained with blood, it was not Chen Song.

Even so, Qu Jingyun's mood didn't lighten much.

She recognized the injured person.

This man was named Lü Bo. He was once Shen Yunting's deputy general and had known Shen Yunting for nearly twenty years. They could be considered brothers.

Not to mention that he even took a knife for Shen Yunting more than a decade ago.

No wonder Shen Yunting looked so grim today.

Qu Jingyun's worried gaze fell on Shen Yunting's face and lingered for a long time.

After the military doctor had examined the wounded and left, Shen Yunting looked at Lü Bo on the bed, his eyes filled with grief.

After a long silence, he slammed his fist on the table, making a loud noise, and blood gushed out.

But he seemed oblivious and was about to throw another punch.

This time, however, they were stopped.

He looked at the person beside him with dissatisfaction, but the anger on his face immediately dissipated.

She called out softly, "What are you doing here?"

Qu Jingyun sighed silently, clenched his fist, and walked to the side to pick up the medicine for his injuries.

She applied the medicine to him without saying anything.

Given Shen Yunting's usual vigilance, she was probably discovered the moment she appeared at the tent entrance.

How could things have turned out like this today?

He must be in a lot of pain right now!

Realizing this, Qu Jingyun tenderly held Shen Yunting's fist and gently blew on it.

He then spoke up, "Brother Lü probably wouldn't want you to hurt yourself like this. Can you tell me what happened?"

"Suddenly, a soldier in my army tried to kill me when I wasn't looking. Fortunately, Brother Lü reacted quickly and took the sword for me, killing the soldier in the process." Shen Yunting lowered his head, looking annoyed.

"I was too careless this time, I didn't expect..."

With red eyes, he leaned on Qu Jingyun's shoulder, his voice hoarse with despair.

Qu Jingyun also found it unpleasant to hear.

It turns out that Lü Bo was injured while saving him, no wonder he was in so much pain.

“Brother Lü saved me once back then, and now… If anything happens to him because of this, I can never make it up to him even if I die,” Shen Yunting continued.

The worried and pained gaze lingered on the person on the bed, not leaving for a long time.

Qu Jingyun gently patted Shen Yunting's shoulder and reassured him, "Brother Lü is a lucky man, he will definitely be alright."

She thought of what Zhang Hu had just said, and her expression became conflicted.

After hesitating for a moment, he said, "I have something to tell you, but you have to promise me you won't get excited."

Qu Jingyun's expression was far too solemn. Shen Yunting noticed this, pondered for a moment, and then nodded.

Even so, Qu Jingyun was still worried and quickly reached out to hug Shen Yunting's waist, leaning her whole body on his shoulder.

Then he continued, "I overheard Zhang Hu's words just now. The person who attacked you might have been Zhang Hu's doing."

Upon hearing this, Shen Yunting's aura immediately spread outwards.

He took a step to walk outside, but was stopped by Qu Jingyun who held him tightly around the waist.

"Don't forget what you promised me. Don't get excited, let me explain slowly."

Worried about hurting Qu Jingyun, Shen Yunting had no choice but to stop, clenching his fists, his heart filled with hatred.

He gritted his teeth and said, "I'm going to kill him."

“What’s the point of killing him now? We don’t have any solid evidence. If we just kill him like this, how will we report back to the capital? The Emperor might even suspect you of having ulterior motives.”

Qu Jingyun hugged the person tighter and tighter, and then said, "Since he actually wanted to hurt you, he definitely won't just do it once. He will do it again."

“We just need to have someone keep an eye on him and catch him red-handed. That way, we can convince the public. You and Zhang Hu have a grudge against each other, and no one will believe you without absolute evidence.”

Shen Yunting remained unmoved, insisting, "I don't care about any of that. He dared to attack me and hurt Brother Lü, so I will never let him get away with it."

"Of course we won't let him go," Qu Jingyun said patiently, "but now is not the best time."

"Even if you don't think about yourself, you have to think about me, your mother, the children, and Brother Lü. We must come up with a foolproof plan for this."

Upon hearing this, Shen Yunting finally calmed down.

Dragged down to sit beside her by Qu Jingyun, she looked pained and said, "It's all my fault. If I had been more careful, this wouldn't have happened..."

"We didn't expect Zhang Hu to be so audacious as to attack you on the battlefield," Qu Jingyun sighed.

In the past, their confrontations with Zhang Hu were always based on the premise of not harming the imperial court and the army.

But I never expected this time...

“Zhang Zhou’s entire family has been exiled, and Zhang Hu is barely able to protect himself. He probably hates me to the bone now, and he’s capable of anything to get revenge.” Shen Yunting’s eyes grew colder and colder, filled with murderous intent.

Qu Jingyun held his hand and snorted coldly, "We are not afraid of what he wants to do. Let him come. Besides, we are now on guard. It's not certain who will win or lose."

Shen Yunting nodded, forcing himself to calm down.

Her gaze fell on Lü Bo again, and she sighed silently, her heart filled with guilt.

"Didn't the army doctor say he's out of danger? Don't be sad," Qu Jingyun quickly comforted him, but a sense of confusion lingered in her heart.

Shen Yunting just said that Lü Bo directly killed the assassin, but that sounds a bit strange.

Is she overthinking it?
