Chapter 18: Successfully Playing the victim

Yin Xue's eyes lit up.

He then developed a sense of admiration for Qu Jingyun.

She truly hadn't expected Qu Jingyun to think so far ahead.

Yin Xue smiled and said, "That's wonderful! My little brother will definitely be well taken care of in the Divine Machine Camp."

Qu Jingyun nodded gently, "Yes, I'll go into the palace first, and later find a few trustworthy people to spread the message."

Upon hearing this, Yin Xue became nervous.

This was the first time she had ever done something like this.

Seeing her nervousness, Qu Jingyun comforted her, "Don't be afraid, it's just a small matter. Even if the Emperor finds out, he can't do much about it. If he really wants to silence her, wouldn't that confirm his intention to eliminate the General's Mansion?"

"Mother is right, I know what to do."

After saying that, Yin Xue smiled at Qu Jingyun again.

After the two agreed on the plan, Qu Jingyun immediately changed her clothes and entered the palace.

Inside the Hall of Diligent Governance.

The Emperor looked at Qu Jingyun expressionlessly.

If you look closely, it's not hard to see that he's very unhappy right now.

The Emperor frowned and said seriously, "Qu Jingyun, I have been tolerant of you in every way, don't go too far."

Qu Jingyun stood up straight and looked directly into his eyes.

"Your Majesty, my son has been neglected for the past five years and has become like a piece of rotten wood. People outside are saying that my husband has become cold and indifferent since he left. I am really worried that even worse rumors will spread. I beg Your Majesty to give my son a chance."

"Qu Jingyun!"

The emperor angrily called out her name.

She calmly wiped away imaginary tears and spoke again: "Your Majesty, do you want to disappoint the people of the world?"

The Emperor gritted his teeth and warned, "Don't spout nonsense!"

“Your Majesty, this is not what I said, but what the common people outside are saying. If Your Majesty does not believe me, you can go outside and listen to what the common people are saying.”

"I don't need you to tell me!"

After a rebuke, the emperor's face turned ferocious.

A moment later, the Emperor angrily rebuked, "If you want Shen Cong to join the Divine Machine Battalion, you must first make sure Shen Cong has the ability. But you yourself said he is a piece of rotten wood, and rotten wood is hard to carve. If I set this precedent for you, then should I do the same for everyone else?"

She shrugged helplessly.

"If it weren't for the fact that I've been away from home for the past five years, how could things have turned out this way? Otherwise, I'll investigate who tried to kill me five years ago."

"Insolence!" the Emperor roared again.

"Her Majesty the Empress has arrived!" came the eunuch's shrill voice from outside.

Upon learning that the Empress had arrived, the Emperor's attitude improved considerably.

He gave Qu Jingyun a cold look.

"I will find a way to deal with your matter. Don't make a scene with the Empress, or I won't be able to save you."

"Your Majesty, I understand." She obediently replied.

The Empress walked in and went straight to Qu Jingyun.

The Empress smiled and reached out to her, "Madam Shen, why are you kneeling? It would be better if you stood up and said what you had to say."

She immediately got up.

Coincidentally, she didn't want to kneel anymore either.

After getting up, Qu Jingyun explained to the Empress again: "Please forgive me, Your Majesty. I know I shouldn't have bothered you and the Emperor, but my child is hard to tame. No teacher is willing to take him in now, so I thought I'd send him to the Shenji Camp for two years of training."

The Empress frowned. "This might be a bit difficult for you. Everyone in the Divine Machine Battalion has their own special skills. I agree with you sending the Second Young Master in, but what are his special skills?"

Qu Jingyun's eyes immediately reddened, and she looked like she was about to burst into tears.

Upon seeing this, the Emperor immediately stopped her: "Qu Jingyun, don't do anything reckless, and don't talk nonsense."

"Your Majesty, I haven't said anything yet. Please don't get agitated. I just want to say that in the past five years, my child has been ruined. Now, he has nowhere else to go but the Shenji Battalion. Moreover, I have lost five years of my memory and can't remember who hurt me."

Upon hearing this, the emperor visibly breathed a sigh of relief.

The Emperor suddenly changed his mind: "Empress, I think it's fine for the second young master of the Shen family to go to the Shenji Camp. If he doesn't have a skill, then he can start from small things, what do you think?"

"Your Majesty, I thank you."

Qu Jingyun knelt down again.

Seeing how happy she was, the Emperor's expression turned even colder.

Then the Emperor warned, "Qu Jingyun, the only reason I agreed to your request was because I felt sorry for the child. If you have any conscience, you should properly educate your son, regardless of age."

"Your Majesty is right. I will certainly give them a good talking-to when I get back. I thank Your Majesty again."

She kowtowed to the emperor very solemnly.

The Empress, who had originally intended to sell Qu Jingyun to a good person, saw that she had lost her chance and gave the guilty-looking Emperor a disgruntled look.

At the same time, new ideas also came to mind.

The fact that Qu Jingyun could make the Emperor feel so guilty suggests that she must have some leverage over him.

Empress Wang smiled and helped Qu Jingyun up. "You haven't spent any time with the children in the past five years. You must feel guilty now. I happen to have a few bolts of fabric. Take them back and make some clothes for the children. Perhaps then they will see how good you are."

She curtsied and said, "Your Majesty, I thank you. May I apologize to Your Majesty for wanting to return and share the good news with my children?"

Upon hearing this, the Empress felt displeased.

The Emperor saw through the Empress's thoughts and, unusually, spoke to her kindly.

"Alright, Madam Shen has things to do back home. If you want to catch up, you can do it another day when Madam Shen has time."

The Empress then reluctantly withdrew her hand.

“Okay, then you go back and spend time with the children first. We can talk more when we have the chance later. I’m very interested in your life over the past five years.”

"Yes," Qu Jingyun replied, ignoring the emperor's cold stare.

Seeing that she dared to agree, the Emperor snorted coldly.

He urged impatiently, "Alright, hurry back, lest the children start arguing with you again, and don't come to the palace crying again."

Qu Jingyun immediately took her leave.

Empress Wang glanced at the Emperor and then took her leave.

Upon returning to the General's Mansion, Qu Jingyun immediately went to find Yin Xue.

Yin Xue was pacing back and forth in the courtyard when she saw Qu Jingyun return. She lifted her skirt and ran over to her.

"Mother, are you alright?"

Qu Jingyun smiled and reassured her, "Don't worry, Mother is doing very well now. The Emperor has agreed to my conditions."

Yin Xue was slightly taken aback, then laughed again.

"That's wonderful! Now my little brother can go to the Shenji Camp. We have to tell him this good news right away!"

Qu Jingyun then realized that there was no point in them laughing like fools; they should hurry up and inform Shen Cong.

Soon, Shen Cong was summoned over.

Upon seeing Yin Xue there, Shen Cong immediately tensed up.

He carefully observed Qu Jingyun's eyes.

"The son has met his mother."

Seeing how cautious he was, Qu Jingyun's eyes reddened.

She held Chen Cong's hand tightly, trying hard to suppress the urge to cry, and said to him, "Good child, Mother has secured a chance for you to go to the Shenji Camp."

"The Divine Machine Battalion?" Shen Cong was momentarily confused, then panicked: "Mother, can we not go?"

Upon hearing this, Qu Jingyun was dumbfounded.
