Chapter 26 Marrying as the Eldest Daughter

Move out of the General's Mansion?

Qi Mingyue shook her head subconsciously.

That won't do. They finally found such a powerful backer in the General's Mansion.

She could only get to know the daughters and sons of various wealthy families by relying on the name of the General's Mansion. Without this protection, she would be able to marry a minor official of the seventh rank at best.

Qi Mingyue knelt down in fear.

“Over the years, the General’s Mansion has taken good care of us. My mother said that Mingyue should serve her aunt well to repay her kindness. Mingyue does not want to leave and is willing to stay in the General’s Mansion to take good care of her aunt. She can also choose not to get married.”

“That won’t do!” Shen Song immediately refused.

“Cousin…” Qi Mingyue shook her head with red eyes.

She looked up at Qu Jingyun, then looked away in alarm.

"I know my cousin treats me very well, but my mind is made up. I will take good care of my aunt in the future, and it's okay if I don't get married."

"That won't do," Qu Jingyun and Shen Song said in unison.

Upon hearing this, Shen Song looked up at Qu Jingyun with delight.

"Does Mother agree?"

Qu Jingyun looked puzzled: "Agree to what?"

"Let Mingyue marry as the eldest daughter of the General's Mansion," Shen Song said.

Qu Jingyun was slightly taken aback, then anger rose in her eyes again.

No wonder Qi Yun'er has been quiet these past few days.

I never expected they would set their sights on her stupid son.

Seeing that Qu Jingyun remained silent and her expression grew increasingly grim, Qi Mingyue suddenly kowtowed to Qu Jingyun.

"Please don't punish my cousin, Aunt. It's all Mingyue's fault. Mingyue will not get married."

"Don't be like this." Shen Song immediately went to help Qi Mingyue up. "With me here, even if my mother doesn't acknowledge you, I will still recognize you as my sister. You are the eldest daughter of my General's Mansion."

"Husband," Yin Xue called out to him coldly, her brows furrowed.

Hearing Yin Xue speak, Shen Song looked at Yin Xue with anticipation.

"Xue'er, you agree too, don't you?"

Yin Xue reminded her, "Mingyue has a mother; she is the eldest daughter of the General's Mansion. So what is your cousin's relationship with the General's Mansion?"

“Of course…” Shen Song was speechless for a moment.

Seeing that Shen Song couldn't answer, Qi Mingyue glanced timidly at Qu Jingyun before quickly looking away.

“Last year, my grandmother said she wanted to adopt me into my aunt’s family so that I could rightfully marry as the eldest daughter of the General’s Mansion.”

After saying that, Qi Mingyue explained to Qu Jingyun, "Auntie, don't worry, I didn't agree."

Qu Jingyun sneered, "If you want to agree, you'd better see if you're qualified."

Seeing that she harbored such great hostility towards Qi Mingyue, Shen Song became even more dissatisfied.

He grabbed Qi Mingyue's hand, his attitude becoming forceful.

“I have made up my mind, and I have also chosen a husband for Mingyue: the heir of the Marquis of Zhenbei. He is just right.”

"The Marquis of Zhenbei?" Qu Jingyun gripped her teacup tightly.

She began to scrutinize Qi Mingyue and Shen Song with seriousness.

Noticing the expectation in Qi Mingyue's eyes, Qu Jingyun smiled.

She fiddled with the teacup in her hand and smiled, "The Lady of Zhenbei's family are imperial merchants in Jiangnan. Their businesses include not only cloth and tea, but also rice, flour, and cooking oil. The old lady's family is the Zhenguo General's Mansion, and she..."

She glanced at Qi Mingyue. "Who does she think she is?"

Qi Mingyue's face turned deathly pale, and her eyes quickly reddened.

"Auntie..."

She looked up and stopped Qi Mingyue from crying.

"Leaving aside whether my General's Mansion is worthy or not, your status as the widow of the Qi family is definitely not worthy. We would never do something so shameful."

After saying that, Qu Jingyun pointed to Shen Song.

Shen Song, however, was quite defiant, complaining in a low voice, "Mother, you're just biased."

"Is it wrong for me to favor my own children?" Qu Jingyun retorted.

Seeing that she was about to get angry, Yin Xue shook her head, signaling Shen Song to stop talking.

Shen Song snorted coldly, angrily flung his sleeves, and left.

"Cousin, wait for me!" Qi Mingyue immediately lifted her skirt and chased after him.

"Wait a minute." Qu Jingyun called out to Qi Mingyue, "You and Song'er are both adults now. There is a difference between men and women. Be mindful of your manners."

Qi Mingyue's body suddenly stiffened.

She turned her head and looked helplessly at Shen Song.

Shen Song subconsciously looked at Yin Xue.

Seeing the disappointment in Yin Xue's eyes, Shen Song immediately stepped back to Yin Xue's side.

He took Yin Xue's hand and said, "It's my fault."

“Cousin…” Qi Mingyue’s eyes reddened.

If you look closely, you can see the jealousy she couldn't hide in her eyes.

Yin Xue spoke up to remind her, "Mingyue, your mother is still alive and is a widow. Your mother-in-law took you in with kindness back then, but that doesn't mean you belong to the General's Mansion. We don't expect you to make any contributions to the General's Mansion, but don't tarnish its reputation."

"Xue'er, Mingyue, she..."

Yin Xue interrupted him, saying, "My husband is currently under house arrest. If he is impeached for any other reason, his career will likely be delayed for a while longer."

If Shen Song hadn't been so foolish, she wouldn't have made it so clear.

Upon hearing that it concerned his career, Shen Song stopped worrying.

Shen Song put on a stern face and said seriously, "Mingyue, your sister-in-law is right. If the heir of the Marquis of Zhenbei truly likes you, I don't think he would care about social status."

Qi Mingyue was furious that Shen Song was so easily turned, but she couldn't say anything.

She obediently curtsied: "Mingyue understands."

Only then did they leave.

Qu Jingyun didn't want to see Shen Song anymore, so she waved for them to leave.

She kept Shen Yue for a while, explaining the drawbacks of Qi Mingyue marrying as the eldest daughter, before letting her leave.

Xiao Liu walked in with a letter in his hand, looking at Qu Jingyun with a happy expression.
