Chapter 64: Birds of a feather

"I feel sorry for you, they really are..." The moment Shen Yunting turned to look at Qu Jingyun, his expression immediately turned into a forced smile.

Qu Jingyun sneered, "You have the nerve to say that? I've been taking care of them all these years. Even if they've done something wrong, only I can criticize them."

"You, an incompetent father, are not qualified."

Her words were barbed and pointed, which startled Shen Yunting.

After years apart, he thought Qu Jingyun would be very happy to see him again.

What's going on today?

Was it because he had been away from home for many years and had neglected to care for the mother and her three children?

Noticing the gazes directed at him, Shen Yunting coughed lightly, feeling uneasy.

He simply said in a low voice, "You all go about your own business."

Then he pulled Qu Jingyun back to her room, following her memory of how it looked.

Bai Shuangshuang, who was left behind, looked somewhat embarrassed.

Standing at the door, I didn't know whether to leave or stay.

Seeing this, the old lady quickly said, "Since Miss Bai is the daughter of my son's old friend, please stay here for now."

"Why don't we let Sister Bai move into the courtyard next to mine? We're about the same age and both women, so it would be more convenient for us," Shen Yue said eagerly.

These words struck Bai Shuangshuang's ears, and a hint of displeasure flashed in her eyes.

She doesn't like those kinds of words.

Unable to hold back, she spoke up: "My sister is nearly ten years older than Miss Shen, so we're not exactly of similar age. Besides, given my status, I'm not worthy of being called 'elder sister' by Miss Shen."

"Judging from Sister Bai's appearance, she doesn't look like she's ten years older than me. You are the daughter of my father's old friend, and you can also be considered my father's niece. Aren't you my sister?"

As if oblivious to Bai Shuangshuang's discomfort, Shen Yue took the initiative to affectionately put her arm around Bai Shuangshuang's.

He spoke to himself, "There are no women of my age in this mansion. Seeing you now, I feel like we've known each other for ages. I'll take you to the courtyard to rest now."

"You must have had a long and tiring journey, sister."

After saying this, he led Bai Shuangshuang into the general's mansion.

Behind him, the brothers Shen Cong and Shen Song exchanged a glance and looked at each other in bewilderment.

How come they see their mother's shadow in Shen Yue?

I couldn't help but shudder.

I don't know if this is a good thing or a bad thing.

"Madam, what's wrong? Are you angry with me? I apologize."

Shen Yunting followed behind Qu Jingyun, quietly keeping her company.

“I know you’ve had a tough time all these years. I’ve been stationed at the border for many years, and my children at home are so immature. You must have suffered a lot of grievances. I will definitely make it up to you this time I’m back.”

After entering the room, Shen Yunting closed the door and turned to look at Qu Jingyun again.

Over the years, Qu Jingyun seems to have remained unchanged.

Just like when she was young, every move she makes touches his heartstrings.

Thinking of this, he reached out, wanting to embrace the beloved who haunted his dreams.

But the other person pressed their fingertips against her chest and pushed her back rather rudely.

"What's wrong?" Shen Yunting asked, looking bewildered.

"Who exactly is that woman? Which old friend's daughter is she?" Qu Jingyun questioned sharply, her gaze gradually hardening as she looked at the other person.

After being married for over a decade, she could see the guilty conscience in his eyes at a glance, and her heart sank.

"The daughter of a soldier. Her father once did me a favor. She happened to have important business in the capital, so I brought her here. She may need your wife to take good care of her from now on."

Shen Yunting pondered for a long time before coming up with this reason.

He didn't mean anything by saying that; he just felt that Bai Shuangshuang was a woman, and Qu Jingyun was more suitable to take care of her.

But these words took on a different meaning when they reached Qu Jingyun's ears.

Could it be that this is to make thorough preparations for her to take care of the general's wife in advance?

She laughed in anger, coldly staring at the man in front of her.

"Have you forgotten your vow? Those who break their vows will pay the price."

"What do you mean by that, Madam?" Shen Yunting panicked.

Judging from the expression on Qu Jingyun's face, he finally realized the seriousness of the matter.

He reached out his hand, eager to pull Qu Jingyun along.

But the other party easily dodged it.

He hurriedly asked, "What exactly does Madam mean?"

"I just think you and your son are truly birds of a feather, both of you love to provoke favors from outsiders who claim to have saved your lives," Qu Jingyun sneered.

The more unfamiliar her gaze became towards Shen Yunting, the more flustered Shen Yunting felt.

Shen Yunting patiently asked, "Explain yourself, is there some misunderstanding between us?"

"What exactly is your relationship with that woman?" Qu Jingyun asked again.

“She is the daughter of an old friend of mine, and I need to take care of her for a while.” Shen Yunting did not feel there was anything wrong with this.

Unexpectedly, Qu Jingyun became even more agitated after hearing these words.

She sneered, "How will you take care of her? Will you give her my position as the general's wife?"

At this point, Shen Yunting finally realized the meaning behind Qu Jingyun's words.

He frowned and asked, "Are you suspecting there's something between her and me?"

"Are you kidding me? We've been married for over ten years, do you think I don't even have this much trust? How could I betray you?"

He found these words absurd and laughable.

"Do you know what your son did not long ago? He wanted to marry a woman who saved his life as a concubine, and he almost divorced his first wife."

Qu Jingyun bluntly stated, "When he proposed to Xue'er, he repeatedly vowed to be with her for life and never betray her, but what was the result? It was still the same."

"You brought a woman from the border to the capital and took meticulous care of her along the way. What exactly do you want to do?"

Shen Yunting had never imagined there was such a layer to this, and couldn't help but feel wronged in his heart.

“He is him and I am me. We have been husband and wife for many years. You know my thoughts best. I only have feelings for you and have never had the thought of taking a concubine.”

"Just because it's not there now doesn't mean it won't be in the future." Looking at Shen Yunting's expression, Qu Jingyun forced her heart to harden.

She took a deep breath and said directly, "Let's get a divorce."

The moment the words "divorce" were uttered, Shen Yunting's face turned extremely unpleasant.

The words were practically spat out through clenched teeth: "What did you say?"

"I said we should get a divorce," Qu Jingyun repeated.

She turned her head and met Shen Yunting's bloodshot eyes, and felt even more reluctant to do so.

But thinking about what I would have to do next, I forced myself to look away.

I was afraid that if I kept looking, I would soften and change my mind.

He said in a low voice, "Although we have been married for more than ten years and have three children, we have spent too little time together. Our feelings for each other have been worn away without us even realizing it. It would be better to let each other go as soon as possible."
