Chapter 109 Sister
Lu Yanhe laughed and said, "I was forced into it."
Li Pengfei clicked his tongue twice.
"How many more times are you going to make this kind of comment?" Lu Yanhe teased. "When you finally put in a little effort, you won't keep asking me if I've been possessed."
"I'm not reconciled," Li Pengfei said indignantly. "Your grades used to be worse than mine."
"That's because I didn't come to school."
"You think I'm actually studying just because I come to school every day?"
"How dare you say that? And you're even proud of it?"
Li Pengfei spat at him, "Don't try to put a bad name on me. You're shameless for not coming to school? And you're even proud of it? You're not that famous, so famous that you don't have time to come to school?"
Lu Yanhe: "..."
I've been checkmated.
I have nothing to say.
The main reason was that Li Pengfei's argument was surprisingly logical, leaving him with no room for rebuttal.
"Hmm?" Lu Yanhe's gaze suddenly paused, revealing a look of surprise.
"What's wrong?" Li Pengfei followed Lu Yanhe's gaze and saw a girl with a ponytail and very bright eyes. She was wearing jeans and a T-shirt, and looked very ordinary. She had no makeup on and looked a little tired.
"You know him?" Li Pengfei asked.
Lu Yanhe nodded and said, "I ran into her at the school gate this morning. She said she was Xu Zijun's older sister, Xu Fanxing."
Li Pengfei looked surprised.
"Then what is she doing standing here? Waiting for Xu Zijun?"
"Probably, but Xu Zijun doesn't seem to want to see her." Lu Yanhe explained, "As soon as I got to the classroom this morning, I told Xu Zijun about her sister waiting for her at the school gate, but Xu Zijun didn't say anything and didn't come out to see her."
"Uh." Li Pengfei pondered for a moment and said, "Could it be because of that recommendation quota?"
Lu Yanhe said, "I don't know, it's hard to guess."
"Then let's go ask her." Li Pengfei, with an air of nonchalance, said this and walked straight towards Xu Fanxing. "Are you Xu Zijun's sister?"
Xu Fanxing was startled by the question and instinctively took a step back, looking at the tall boy with some wariness.
"Who are you?"
Lu Yanhe had no choice but to go as well.
"Hello, this is Li Pengfei. We're both Xu Zijun's classmates," Lu Yanhe explained. "I spoke with Xu Zijun this morning, didn't you see her?"
After seeing Lu Yanhe appear, Xu Fanxing's wariness lessened slightly.
She gave a bitter smile and said, "Zijun probably doesn't want to see me."
"Why?" Li Pengfei asked directly. "You're her sister. Did you do something to offend her that's why she doesn't want to see you?"
Lu Yanhe: "..."
Li Pengfei remained as impulsive as ever, asking questions without any tact or subtlety.
But this direct attitude made Xu Fanxing laugh helplessly.
-
Ten minutes later, the three of them sat down at a small restaurant across from the school.
Li Pengfei said, "Tell me what you want to eat, and I'll pay the bill."
They are all single-serving rice bowls.
Lu Yanhe ordered a cucumber stir-fry with pork for twelve yuan, and Xu Fanxing ordered a tomato and egg dish for ten yuan. He then said, "You are Xu Zijun's classmates, so let me treat you."
Li Pengfei pressed Xu Fanxing, who was about to stand up to order, back into her seat.
"Are you kidding? Who pays for their own meal when they eat with me?" He pulled over the menu with an air of authority and went to the order counter.
Xu Fanxing hesitated for a moment.
Lu Yanhe said, "Sister Fanxing, did you wait for her at the school gate all day today?"
"Hmm." Xu Fanxing nodded, turning her gaze away from Li Pengfei's figure, and sighed, "I'm sorry for troubling you all, and for making you treat me to dinner."
Lu Yanhe said, "Although I'm not paying the bill, we're all happy to treat Xu Zijun's sister to dinner. It's okay. Actually, we're all a little confused as to why Xu Zijun doesn't want to see you."
“Because I didn’t want her to give up her recommendation spot.” Xu Fanxing sighed. “She gave it up for me.”
"Huh?" Li Pengfei had just returned with his order, looking completely bewildered. He asked in surprise, "Are you from our school too? Did Xu Zijun give up her spot to give it to you?"
“No.” Xu Fanxing shook her head. “I didn’t go to university. I’ve been working outside all this time. Ziju gave up because Chu Saiying’s family gave our family 200,000 yuan and asked our parents to persuade Ziju to give up the spot. Originally, Ziju was unwilling to give up. She had been working very hard to get into university and had never slacked off. Later, our parents said that if she was unwilling to give up, they would have me come back and get married to earn a dowry to make up for the 200,000 yuan. That’s when she was forced to agree.”
Li Pengfei was completely bewildered, stunned by these words that seemed to have nothing to do with his entire life.
"Bride price?"
Xu Fanxing said, "I didn't know about this before. I only found out later when someone sent me a message that she gave up her recommendation spot."
Lu Yanhe was also at a loss for how to react.
"No way, your parents are really shameless!" Li Pengfei exclaimed angrily after realizing what had happened. "They forced you to come back and marry someone just for 200,000 yuan, just to earn dowry money? Are they out of their minds?"
Looking at the boy in front of her, with his regular features and innocent yet angry expression, Xu Fanxing could tell he was a child who had grown up spoiled by his parents.
Only someone like this would be so righteously angry at a time like this.
She didn't intend to talk too much with her two classmates, Xu Zijun and Xu Zijun.
She said, "I wanted to persuade Ziju to give up this plan. She has been working hard since she was a child to go to university. I know how rare this opportunity is. I don't want her to give up this opportunity for me, so I rushed back to see her, but she refused to see me."
Lu Yanhe said, "In this situation, if I were Xu Zijun, I wouldn't see you either."
Li Pengfei said, "However, don't worry too much about this kind of thing. With Xu Zijun's grades, she can still get into a good university even without the independent enrollment program."
Lu Yanhe nodded.
Xu Fanxing shook her head. "There's only one chance for the college entrance exam. Nobody knows what will happen. If there's a more secure opportunity, I don't want her to give it up. I already didn't get the chance to go to university. She can't be delayed any longer."
She suddenly pulled a stack of folded papers out of her bag, which looked like they had been torn from a notebook.
She handed it to Lu Yanhe and said, "Could you please give this to her for me? I have to take the train back to Guangzhou tonight. I only took one day off, so please make sure she reads it carefully."
Holding the stack of folded papers, which felt about four or five sheets thick, Lu Yanhe looked into Xu Fanxing's pleading eyes and realized he couldn't bring himself to refuse.
