Chapter 30 Sudden Attack
"sharp!"
After they reached the top of the steps, Lu Yanhe applauded from behind.
Chen Siqi immediately turned her head and looked at Lu Yanhe in surprise.
What are you doing?
Lu Yanhe said, "I witnessed the entire confrontation between you and Li Lin just now, and I admire you from the bottom of my heart."
Chen Siqi said with a straight face, "Are you sick?"
Lu Yanhe smiled and said, "Really? I heard last time that Li Lin was going to take the art exam. Why didn't you have that idea?"
Chen Siqi sneered: "Why should I take the art exam? Only people with terrible grades take the art exam."
Lu Yanhe: "..."
Chen Siqi turned to leave.
"Hey!" Lu Yanhe called out to her.
"What else do you want to do?"
Lu Yanhe pointed to Chen Siqi's head.
"You lost a hair on your head."
Chen Siqi's expression changed, and she immediately reached out to touch it. Sure enough, she touched a bird feather that had fallen onto her head at some unknown time. This made her feel embarrassed and angry. She glared at Lu Yanhe and turned to leave.
Lu Yanhe curled his lip.
"That's weird. I kindly reminded him and he glared at me. He has a strange temper."
-
When Lu Yanhe arrived at the classroom, he immediately sensed something was wrong.
He turned and looked around. For some reason, everyone was sitting in their seats reading books today.
At this time of day, at least half of the people are usually laughing and joking around.
What's wrong with me today?
Lu Yanhe hesitated before sitting down in his seat.
"Why is everything so strange today?" he couldn't help but ask the classmate next to him.
"What's strange?"
"Everyone is reading."
"Oh, Old Chen just said that we'll have to do a dictation of words in the first class later."
Old Chen is their English teacher.
Lu Yanhe understood.
It turned out to be a random inspection; these people were all cramming at the last minute.
"Old Chen also said that if anyone can't spell half of the words from memory this time, they should go to his office after school every day to spell the words from memory."
Lu Yanhe chuckled.
It seems that this is the main reason.
Even the most uneducated student wouldn't want to be kept behind every day to go to his office to recite words from memory.
Lu Yanhe asked, "Which part of the vocabulary should we memorize today?"
Vocabulary list for the first semester of Grade 11.
Lu Yanhe thought to himself, "That's good."
At that moment, Old Chen arrived.
Although they call him Lao Chen, he is actually only in his early thirties. He came to their school to teach English right after graduating from university. He has a good personality, doesn't make things difficult for students, and has always had a good reputation among them. He also has a good relationship with his students.
Since the first class was in English, as is customary, this morning self-study session also became an English-only session.
After Old Chen came in, he looked around the classroom, glanced at the time, clicked his tongue twice, and said, "Your class is really carefree. It's already the senior year, and at this time, half of the students are still not here."
Everyone silently continued memorizing vocabulary, ignoring him.
Old Chen launched into another barrage of taunts: "Look at how hard you're working! If you had even half this level of self-discipline all the time, you could all be in the top 10. Now you're cramming at the last minute. I'd like to see how many of you can pass. Don't blame me for being ruthless. I analyzed your answers to the monthly exam a few days ago, and to my surprise, most of you had basic problems. You lost an average of three points just for spelling mistakes. How can I possibly accept this?"
Old Chen wasn't harsh in his speech; he just talked on and on like an old man. But this style worked very well in his class. What's rather surprising is that no one took what he said lightly. This is very rare in high school classes.
As students gradually entered the classroom, they saw the solemn atmosphere and Mr. Chen standing on the podium. They knew something was wrong, so they quickly went to their seats and whispered to the person next to them what was going on.
With only five minutes left before class started, Li Pengfei leisurely strolled in through the back door, carrying his schoolbag.
"Wow, it's so quiet!" Li Pengfei was startled as soon as he entered.
Old Chen: "They're all like you, seniors in high school, and they're only getting to the classroom at this hour."
"Old Chen, you're being unfair. I wasn't late, and you still criticize me for that?"
"Don't blame me for not telling you in advance, the first class after school will be a vocabulary dictation test. Anyone who gets more than half of them wrong will have to come to my office after school every day to dictate the vocabulary." Old Chen crossed his arms. "Including you."
Li Pengfei's eyes widened. "Holy crap, no way? A surprise attack?"
"How dare you say that? You only got 43 points on your English test. Tell me, how many of those points were your own and how many were just guesses?" Old Chen asked.
A burst of suppressed laughter erupted in the classroom.
Li Pengfei pouted, "Damn, Lao Chen, are you making a personal attack?"
"Yesterday I reviewed each of your scores and, after much reflection, I realized I shouldn't just criticize you; I should also criticize myself. I've been too soft-hearted and too lenient with you, always making excuses for you, which led to you losing so many points in English that you shouldn't have. As a teacher, I must take the lead in self-reflection and make improvements through my own actions. So, starting today, I will spend ten minutes each day giving you a dictation test. Today I've given you a wider range of words, mainly to assess your vocabulary foundation. Starting tomorrow, you will dictate twenty words each day. The dictation range will be announced after English class each day. If you get three or fewer wrong, work on them yourself. If you get more than three wrong, come to my office after school."
The entire class looked up in shock, and then a series of groans erupted in the quiet classroom.
"Old Chen, how could you become so heartless!"
"Old Chen, you're not the gentle person you used to be!"
"This is outrageous!"
...
Complaints were constant.
Old Chen smiled and said, "You young people, instead of wasting your energy on wailing, you should memorize a couple more words. Today, you're allowed to get half of them wrong."
"..."
Lu Yanhe sat in the audience and found Old Chen quite interesting.
Actually, their class's English scores weren't bad. In fact, they were among the best, ranking in the top three of the grade. This was largely due to everyone liking Teacher Chen; in school, if you liked a teacher, your grades in that subject usually wouldn't be too bad.
Old Chen suddenly launched this surprise attack today; I have no idea what's going on.
However, this suited him perfectly.
Lu Yanhe summarized his English exam results and found that the biggest problem was forgetting vocabulary, making him only vaguely understand English.
He also needs to make up for his shortcomings.
Twenty words a day is not much; they are all words that have already been memorized and learned. Given their situation, each person can memorize them in an average of ten minutes, provided that they are truly focused on memorizing them.
