Chapter Seventy: Wildlife Conservation Association?

With Lao Qing keeping watch, Zhang Guodong confidently entered Peach Blossom Spring. But upon entering, he nearly burst out laughing. The six little guys, Dahei, Erhei, and their six companions, had grown taller and were becoming increasingly restless. The once-firm tomatoes and large green peppers were now noticeably drooping, the herb garden was a mess, and the ground by the pond was soaking wet—clearly, these six had gone wild! As soon as Zhang Guodong entered, the six of them, sensing something was wrong, quickly and obediently scrambled down. Then, in front of Dahei, a small turtle was struggling to climb out, its shell filthy with mud. Dahei and the others were actually playing with the turtle! Zhang Guodong was both amused and exasperated. He gave Dahei a light tap on the head, and didn't spare Erhei and Xiaoqing either: "Why are you guys so restless? I was planning to have Lao Qing take you hunting and having some fun, but now none of you are going anywhere!" Zhang Guodong wasn't just worried about the six little ones; he also wanted to give them some exercise. After all, wild beasts should have their wild instincts; keeping them as pets for long periods wasn't his intention. The mountains were a good place, with Lao Qing as a good "coach," so there was no need to worry about not learning at the Sixth Elementary School. At this moment, Erhei, with its tiger-like head and drooping ears, circled around Zhang Guodong in a fawning manner, its big tongue occasionally curling as if trying to lick him. But this habit was forbidden by Zhang Guodong; licking him left his clothes covered in saliva, and his food rations would be halved. "Woof—" Erhei looked at Zhang Guodong with pitiful eyes, very human-like. The four little ones, Qing, were rather slippery, always taking the blame and only following at the back. Dahei and Erhei were the eldest and second eldest, so they would occasionally look up at Zhang Guodong but wouldn't come up. Zhang Guodong was amused: "You little devils, don't go into the herb garden again!" He didn't care about anything else, but the herbs were precious, and there weren't many left. Regardless of whether they understood or not, Zhang Guodong checked the rest. Fortunately, the briefcases containing cash had desiccants, and the sealed water generally couldn't seep in. The small iron rack and other items we bought on this trip to the mountains arrived intact, but the crabs and small turtles by the pond suffered terribly from Dahei's antics. The ground was covered in bruises and mangled flesh. It's true, Dahei and his gang are very picky eaters; they don't even care for the small crabs, and now even the small turtles are their playthings. They're only interested in big fish and meat. (The text then abruptly shifts to a seemingly unrelated topic: the tank where the blackfish are kept.)Right there, hungry Big Black and the others went up and scooped up a mouthful of fish to eat. "Alright, it's time to go out for some fresh air!" Zhang Guodong, slightly relieved, took Big Black and the six little ones out of Peach Blossom Spring. After all, the six little ones needed to relieve themselves outside, and Zhang Guodong didn't want Peach Blossom Spring to become smelly. With the sudden appearance of the six little ones, Zhang Guodong asked Lao Qing to be a bit of a doorman, and Lao Qing would naturally bark a warning if anyone appeared. However, at this moment, due to the dim light, the heavy rain, and the strong wind, the visibility was only three or four meters! Nobody wanted to go out in the wind and get soaked. The six little ones stayed outside for half an hour and even went out for a walk in the rain without being noticed. Gradually, the rain outside intensified, and the ditch at the bottom of the cliff became restless. The initial sound of the flash flood grew into a powerful roar, and the ground of the stone house trembled slightly. Although not as loud as before, it still worried everyone, and naturally, they couldn't sleep soundly. Fearing that something unexpected might happen, Zhang Guodong took the six little ones back into Peach Blossom Spring and put them on the bed. "Awooo!" Old Qing suddenly roared and jumped up, looking outside. People coming? Zhang Guodong rolled out of bed and looked outside, seeing several beams of light moving towards them in the distance through the rain. Car headlights? Even in this awful weather, someone couldn't withstand it? At this moment, Li Ningguang and the others also came out with umbrellas, shouting, "Looks like we're not the only unlucky ones today!" There was a hint of schadenfreude in their voices. Zhang Guodong also laughed, "It shouldn't be just us, but we have a place to stay while the others don't—" "Haha!" Li Ningguang laughed loudly. However, his laughter was distorted and masked by the rain and wind, and couldn't carry far. "It seems there's more than one car—" said the driver, Old Lin. With all the headlights on in the rain—white headlights and yellow fog lights forming a line—it was indeed not one car, but three! Liu Dewang worriedly asked, "Damn it, who are these people? What are we going to do about them taking our space?" Everyone was taken aback, and Li Ningguang cursed, "What the hell is going on in your head?" Just as he was cursing, the car that had arrived drove onto the open ground and stopped, the brakes kicking up sprays of water, indicating a hasty approach. "Hey, someone's already here? Stop a car!" The first car arrived, and the person jumped out and saw Zhang Guodong and his group in their large van on the open ground. Then they saw Zhang Guodong and his group with several large umbrellas over the stone house. People got out of the car behind and, hearing this, said impatiently, "Whoever's here, they have to give up the stone house!" The voice came from a young man in a police uniform, while the one who had spoken earlier was an older policeman. Neither of them had an umbrella and were soaked to the bone. Then the car behind stopped, and people got out. "Chairman Li and Miss Bai are getting out. Old Zhang, go and requisition some umbrellas. They can't get wet!" the young man hurriedly called to the older policeman, Old Zhang. Old Zhang, being the veteran policeman, naturally saw Zhang Guodong and the others in front of the stone house. Hearing this, he helplessly walked towards Zhang Guodong. Li Ningguang, on the other hand, looked displeased. Being so close, he had naturally heard their conversation and, upon hearing this, laughed angrily, "Hey, this world has really changed! I didn't expect there to be such a powerful person who can just requisition people like that? I'd like to see which big shot this is!" Wang Zhen and Du Wenqiang flanked Li Ningguang, their eyes fixed on the newcomer. Zhang Guodong thought to himself, borrowing an umbrella in the rain is fine, but this arrogant act of borrowing an umbrella turning into requisitioning people is quite amusing! "Brother Li, is there some important person in the car?" Zhang Guodong asked, raising his eyelids slightly. "Important person my foot! An important person riding in a car worth tens of thousands? Planning a clandestine trip?" Li Ningguang scoffed. The car was large, clearly not high-class. Liu Dewang couldn't help but burst out laughing. He was a clever fellow! Old Zhang was somewhat embarrassed. He had overheard Li Ningguang and the others' conversation. Li Ningguang and Zhang Guodong didn't try to hide anything; they spoke loudly and their sarcasm was obvious. Nevertheless, he braced himself and approached. "Gentlemen, are there leaders from the Provincial Wildlife Conservation Association's inspection team over there? Could you lend me your umbrella in this heavy rain?" Old Zhang said as he approached. His clothes were soaked through, and he looked quite disheveled. In this stormy weather, he couldn't care less about formalities. "Wildlife Conservation Association? Heh heh, so you're in the same line of work!" Li Ningguang sneered. "But sorry, I can't lend you this umbrella!" Zhang Guodong was sweating bullets. In the same line of work? Were they even in the same line of work? "Brother Li, is this Wildlife Conservation Association an official organization? What do they do?" Zhang Guodong asked curiously. Li Ningguang scoffed, "What do they do? Protect wild animals and plants? I haven't seen them protect much, especially some of their so-called leaders sitting in their offices talking about conservation, humph!" Zhang Guodong was surprised that Li Ningguang would say this to his face. He became curious about this association; clearly, Li Ningguang was quite familiar with it. Otherwise, given Li Ningguang's business acumen, he wouldn't bother offending anyone. "Comrade, you're wrong about that. Every industry has bad apples, but there are also good people. You can't generalize," Old Zhang retorted, unsure of Li Ningguang's character but seeing someone holding an umbrella, likely a bodyguard. "A good person? I know the vice president of your association, what's his name? Li Hongbo. It sounds similar to Li Hongzhang. What kind of good person is he? He still does illegal things, doesn't he?" Li Ningguang said. "President Li?" Old Zhang was stunned. This man seemed to have a bad relationship with President Li. Remember, President Li had come on the bus this time too. Just then, the young man called out to Old Zhang, "Old Zhang, what are you dawdling for? Are you making everyone get soaked?" "No need to trouble them, I can jog that distance!" A female voice reached Zhang Guodong's ears. Zhang Guodong was startled, but when he listened more closely, he couldn't hear her. Was it a hallucination? You have to speak loudly or softly in the rain, how could anyone hear you? Zhang Guodong said to Lao Zhang, "I only have one extra umbrella. If you want it, I'll lend it to you; if not, that's fine too!" Having an umbrella is better than having none. Lao Zhang was feeling very awkward being left out in the cold, and Zhang Guodong came to his rescue. Li Ningguang looked at Zhang Guodong in surprise. Zhang Guodong smiled at him, then went into his travel bag in the stone house and took out a small collapsible umbrella, suitable for one person. A big umbrella? Who brought two big umbrellas? "Thank you, it's good to have one!" Lao Zhang took the umbrella, quickly opened it, and ran over. Li Ningguang was annoyed: "Guodong, why are you borrowing an umbrella? None of these people are any good. I'm a good person compared to them!" Zhang Guodong couldn't explain, but he said, "Helping others is helping yourself. Didn't I bring an extra umbrella? I'll lend it to the person who needs it most. As for the others, I didn't consider them!" "Haha, you're so shrewd!" Li Ningguang gave him a thumbs up. "President Li, Miss Bai only has one extra umbrella—" Lao Zhang's voice came over. "Aren't there many umbrellas over there? How come there's only one?" The young man immediately objected. Who's going to use only one small umbrella? How can Lao Zhang be so inefficient? Old Zhang simply remained silent, thinking to himself, "If you're so great, go ahead and requisition them!" He'd disliked this guy for a long time; he always acted like a boss, bossing people around and scolding them. "Forget it, let Xiaobai use these umbrellas. We're all grown men!" a male voice said. "How can we let Chairman Li get soaked with us? Wait a minute, I'll go borrow a few!" the young man hurriedly said. Zhang Guodong, with a half-smile, said to Li Ningguang, "Brother Li, there seems to be a Chairman Li in this group. Could it be that 'Li Hongzhang'? The umbrella requisitioner is here—" "It really is that guy! Going out in this awful weather? That's rare!" Li Ningguang's face turned a little embarrassed. The young man hadn't even arrived yet when he shouted from afar, "The higher-ups are visiting and requisitioning a few umbrellas, please bring them over!" Zhang Guodong found it intriguing; were there really such powerful figures? However, the leader, having seen many such dogs, was quite dismissive of the other party and jokingly said, "Don't come any closer, Old Qing is shy and might hurt someone!" Old Qing responded with a fierce howl, its wolf king aura unmistakable, glaring menacingly at the other. "Ha!" The crowd roared with laughter. This Old Qing was truly amusing; it could even understand Zhang Guodong's words? This was something that surprised everyone. Of course, they had no idea that Old Qing wasn't a wolfhound, but a real wolf king! And a wolf king with supernatural abilities.
