Chapter 474: Lancheng

Lancheng, a city built on the mountain.

People here like to eat hot pot and play mahjong, and the pace of life is very slow.

It was already late at night when Nanxun and Xie Jiashu arrived in Lancheng. They did not look for a place to rest, but went directly to meet the informant in Lancheng.

"Young Master Nan." Liu Ren, the general manager of the Nanyu Lancheng branch, had been waiting for Nan Xun. "This is Lao Zhang, an old neighbor of Lin Zhongwei. Lin Zhongwei asked him to prepare some things for the funeral a few days ago and told him to pick them up at his house at 7:00 AM tomorrow."

As Liu Ren was speaking, Nan Xun shifted his gaze to Lao Zhang's face.

He was a man in his sixties, very thin and looked not very energetic.

"Are you and Lin Zhongwei old neighbors?" Nan Xun asked Lao Zhang.

Old Zhang nodded. "When Zhong Wei was ten, his parents divorced and they moved across the street from us. My wife and I felt sorry for them, an orphan and a widow, so we often looked after them."

"I heard that Lin Zhongwei's old house has been sold?"

"Yeah." Old Zhang narrowed his eyes as if lost in memory. "Five years ago, Zhong Wei's mother fell ill and passed away. He sold his house and left Lancheng. He only comes back to pay his respects to his mother during the Qingming Festival every year."

"Everyone, I see that you are all people of status. Could it be that Zhong Wei has done something wrong?" After all, he was the one who watched Lin Zhongwei grow up, and Lao Zhang still couldn't bear to see Lin Zhongwei go astray.

"Didn't I tell you?" Liu Ren said, "These two are from the Imperial Capital. Didn't Lin Zhongwei work there before, in a high position? I'm not very clear about some old projects at that company, so I wanted to talk to Lin Zhongwei to learn more about them."

"Oh," Lao Zhang nodded. "That's good, that's good. Boss Liu told me not to tell Zhong Wei before, and I was worried that the police would arrest him."

"We didn't let you tell him because we were afraid he'd reject us," Nan Xun said. "After all, he's been gone for so long. If he doesn't want to get involved, that's understandable."

"Right, right. Zhong Wei has a cold personality, so he might refuse." Old Zhang said, "You're right not to tell him. Wait until you meet him tomorrow and tell him that day. Maybe he'll be willing to help."

"Is there anything unusual about Lin Zhongwei returning to Lancheng ten years ago?" Nan Xun asked.

Old Zhang thought hard and said, "Zhong Wei has always been a quiet kid, and he's become even quieter since he came back from the capital ten years ago. Sometimes, I'd see him drinking alone outside. Back then, my wife and I thought he was depressed because he'd lost such a good job."

"Later, Zhong Wei's mother fell ill. Zhong Wei became even more silent. As neighbors, there was nothing we could do. We could only share some of his burdens."

After hearing what Lao Zhang said, Nan Xun was silent for a while.

It seems that Lin Zhongwei is not an unforgivable person. Otherwise, he would not have left resolutely after helping An Jinli do such an important thing.

"You've done a good job as a neighbor." Nan Xun nodded to Old Zhang. "Mr. Liu, Mr. Zhang is a kind-hearted man. You should take better care of him in the future. This is our thank you gift."

"No, no, no!" Hearing Nanxun's words, Lao Zhang quickly shook his head, "It was just a small favor for me. I don't need any thanks."

"Just accept it with peace of mind," Xie Jiashu said. "Our gentleman has always been generous. Your family will never have to worry about food and clothing in the future."
