All morning, Li Xiuyuan didn't go anywhere. He stayed in his office pondering that as a leader, you don't need to know anything else, but you must be good at understanding people and things. He might seem to be enjoying a cup of tea and reading a newspaper, but he wasn't actually spending his time on those things.
In the afternoon, Li Xiuyuan went to the Meilin Village project site and didn't return until after get off work in the evening. When he got back to his office, he ran into Hou Peng.
"Xiuyuan, you went to Meilin Village again?" Hou Peng asked with a smile, looking at Li Xiuyuan's travel-worn appearance. Meilin Village wasn't far, but once you're at a construction site, your clothes and such are bound to get dirty, making it easy for anyone to tell.
"Yeah, I went for a walk."
"You've worked hard. Are you free tonight? Want to grab a drink?" Hou Peng invited. Li Xiuyuan shook his head: "No, I've been at the construction site all afternoon. I'm covered in dust. If I go over there, people will think I've fallen into a ditch. I'll just clean up tonight and get some rest."
Li Xiuyuan didn't actually have any other plans. It was mainly because Hou Peng's last-minute invitation was clearly not sincere. What was the point of going? It would only cause trouble for others and make things awkward for himself.
"It's not as exaggerated as you say. But it's good to rest early if you're tired. Even though you're young, you should still take care of your health." Hou Peng said a few more polite words before turning to leave.
Li Xiuyuan went back to his dormitory, packed up his dirty clothes, and took them home to wash. The dormitory in this town was great in every way, except for the lack of a washing machine. He would have to ask Zhang Xingdong to get one for him later.
Before, it was fine to go home on weekends to do laundry, but now I always go to Meilin Village on weekends, so I don't have time.
Around 6:30 p.m., Li Xiuyuan returned to his home in the county town. When he entered the house, he found that his sister and brother-in-law's family were all there. They were all a little surprised to see Li Xiuyuan return.
Li Xiuyuan didn't come back all weekend, but he did return on Monday night.
"Xiuyuan, what have you been doing? How did you get like this?" Looking at the mud spots on her son's clothes and the dust covering him, Zhang Qiuhe took the clothes from her son's hands and asked with some heartache.
It's quite obvious that he's gotten darker and thinner.
“The project in Meilin Village has started, and I’m always running to the construction site whenever I have free time…” Li Xiuyuan explained with a smile.
“No, you’re going to Meilin Village to be a leader, not a contractor. Why are you always running to the construction site? It’s exposed to the wind and sun.” Zhang Qiuhe asked Li Xiuyuan.
Li Xiuyuan smiled and shook his head: "Mom, being a leader is also about serving the people. There's a saying, 'From the masses, to the masses.' As the deputy mayor, I can't stand idly by in the construction of the new countryside, right?"
Zhang Qiuhe choked for a moment, then gently patted Li Xiuyuan's arm: "Alright, all you do is spout high-sounding platitudes with your mother. Go take a shower, change your clothes, it's time to eat."
"Okay," Li Xiuyuan replied and went to his room.
Zhang Qiuhe took the clothes to help with the washing. When Li Xiuyuan returned to the living room after taking a shower and changing his clothes, everyone was already at the table, waiting for him.
