Chapter 13: The Dark River

Mingluo remembered what Talisa said. After they walked out of the desert, they could go south along the underground river to reach the next level. But the problem was that she couldn't identify the location of the underground river from the Gobi Desert.

"What should we do? The underground river is invisible to us."

Ye Zhihan didn't say much along the way. In fact, he was thinking about a quick way to get to the next level. As Talisa said, heading south along the underground river was the right direction, but hiking through the Gobi Desert and the forest was too time-consuming. He needed a faster way.

"Maybe we can take a boat to the next level." Ye Zhihan was silent for a moment, and finally gave Ming Luo an answer.

"Ah? This is the Gobi Desert, where did the boat come from? Tell me what to do!" Ming Luo was very curious. Ye Zhihan must have some magical method.

She looked at Ye Zhihan with anticipation, which made the 1.80-meter-tall man a little embarrassed. His earlobes were quietly stained with a hint of red. He couldn't tell whether this was a normal interaction in the human world, or whether Mingluo had a good impression of him.

Ye Zhihan's earlobes were red as he condensed the dark shadow into a sharp handleless sword. He tried to force his way through the soil to reach the underground river.

Because there was an underground river under his feet, the soil in the Gobi Desert here was not hard, so it didn't take long for Ye Zhihan to explore the location of the underground river with the help of the shadow sword that continued to go deeper and deeper.

"Mingluo, come down with me." Ye Zhihan took Mingluo into the shadow space of the Shadow Pool, and then he dived in. The shadow carried the two of them like an inky stream of water and poured into the narrow pit dug by the Shadow Sword.

"Your shadow technique is so powerful," Ming Luo couldn't contain his admiration and repeatedly gave Ye Zhihan thumbs up in the shadow space. Although they were passing through a narrow pit, the shadow space was not affected at all, and Ming Luo didn't feel any sense of squeezing.

Ye Zhihan remained alone not because he was as cold and distant as an iceberg, but rather, as Mu Li had said, the people of Suma Continent considered shadow magic to be a dirty art. Those who practiced it disdained to associate with him. Even if someone showed interest in him, they would soon be isolated along with him. He feared Sister Ling would dislike him for his natural ability to master shadow magic, so he never told her about it. Consequently, no one had ever praised his shadow magic in his entire life.

Now, a girl with bright eyes generously praised him for his greatness, and Ye Zhihan felt a surge of joy from the bottom of his heart. Even if he said he didn't care, he still wanted to gain other people's recognition, even though he had only known this person for a few days.

"Thank you, you are very smart too." Ye Zhihan responded to Mingluo seriously.

Ming Luo giggled and continued proudly, "I think you must be the most powerful person in the selection competition. When you become a cross-border person, I can return to the human world. Then I will take you to eat all the human delicacies and let you see the world I live in. There are not so many monsters there!"

Ye Zhihan hadn't expected Ming Luo to say these words. He also considered himself the strongest contestant and qualified to become the new Crossing the Realm Master, but the key point was the second half of Ming Luo's words. These words sounded like a promise, like the most sincere promise between friends.

The joy in Ye Zhihan's heart slowly turned into emotion, and he said, "Okay, I will definitely become a ferryman and take you back."

They had just chatted for a few words when the Shadow Pool brought them both down to the dark river.

The underground river was located in complete darkness, without any light at all. Mingluo was naturally afraid of the dark, and she became panicked when she could not see Ye Zhihan in the shadow space.

"Ye Zhihan? Ye Zhihan, where are you?" Ming Luo anxiously shouted Ye Zhihan's name after he couldn't find him.

"I'm here, don't be afraid." Ye Zhihan's clear and steady voice sounded, with an echo.

After hearing the voice, Mingluo felt much more at ease.

Ye Zhihan was currently soaking most of his body in the cold water of the underground river, fiddling with something. After Mingluo waited for a moment, he finally heard Ye Zhihan's voice again: "Okay, come out and try."

Ye Zhihan was holding a bunch of sunlight grass in his hand, which was emitting a faint white glow. Under the dim light, a small boat was floating on the surface of the dark river. The small boat seemed to be able to barely seat the two of them, and Ming Luo was placed safely on the boat by Ye Zhihan.

"Wow~ Could you be Doraemon? You have everything you want!" She sat happily on the boat, and in the dim light saw Ye Zhihan dragging his wet body onto the boat.

"What is Doraemon?" Ye Zhihan asked in confusion, still wringing the clothes that were soaked by the underground river.

"It's a very magical robot cat. There are many magic weapons in its pockets. It has whatever you want, just like your shadow space." Ming Luo didn't dare to introduce it too complicatedly and only gave a brief explanation.

"Then I shouldn't be as powerful as it is. I can only take out from the shadow space what I put in it, and they are all daily objects, not rare magic weapons." Ye Zhihan raised the corner of his mouth slightly. Does Mingluo regard him as the same kind as a cat?

"Ordinary things can solve urgent needs. You are a must-have man for home and travel. This boat was made by you, and my clothes are all yours!" Ming Luo praised Ye Zhihan so much that he touched his earlobe in embarrassment.

Speaking of clothes, Mingluo suddenly realized that he was still wearing wet clothes, so he asked with concern: "Will you catch a cold like this?"

"It's okay, I can use my true Qi to dry it." Ye Zhihan and Ming Luo squeezed into the small boat, silently driving his true Qi to circulate. When he thought of Ming Luo's concerned eyes, his earlobes turned even redder.

Mingluo felt the air around her getting warmer, and couldn't help but sigh silently that it was indeed a must-have for every household. She wished she could have these superpowers too.

While the two of them were chatting, the boat was moving quickly along the rapids of the underground river. The underground river had many branches and no light source, so it was all up to Ye Zhihan to identify the direction, while Mingluo was guarding the sunlight grass at the bow of the boat.

The sunlight grass's light was weak, but its advantage was its longevity, and it was the only thing that could illuminate the earth for a long time. Deep underground, where there was no light at all, Mingluo faced the sunlight grass with his back to Ye Zhihan, cautiously wary of the dense darkness beyond the light.

The darkness here is darkness in the true sense, not Ye Zhihan's warm shadow. Recalling the tomb-raiding and fantasy horror novels he had read in the past, Ming Luo was very afraid that something terrible would suddenly jump out of the darkness.

"Ye Zhihan, how long will it take us to get there?" Ming Luo wanted to find some topics to distract herself, otherwise she would really be scared to death.

"About two hours. If the flow rate is fast, it may take more than an hour to arrive."

"What does the deep sea abyss look like?" Ming Luo asked curiously, and at the same time gently moved her body towards Ye Zhihan. She felt much more at ease until her back gently touched Ye Zhihan's broad back.
