Bo Mingxiu looked at his son, feeling both distressed and helpless.
Bo Junyi's eyes stayed on the IV tube, and he felt like a young animal trapped in a cage.
His knuckles turned white as he gripped the bed sheet. After a long moment, a hoarse murmur escaped his throat, breaking the silence: "Dad, can I return home for treatment?"
Bo Mingxiu was slightly startled, then knew what he was thinking, and his face immediately darkened.
"Look at you now!" His brows knitted together, his tone brooking no argument. "Your comminuted fracture hasn't had its stitches removed yet, and the turbulence of the plane will dislocate the bones! Susu's due date is next month, and you want her to see you with a big belly and tubes all over her body?"
The ward fell into silence, with only the ticking of instruments as the sound.
Bo Junyi turned his head, staring at the ceiling, and whispered, "...I'm afraid she'll have wild thoughts."
Bo Mingxiu tucked in the quilt that had slipped off his son's body, and stroked the back of his pale hand with his fingertips. "If you really want to protect her, then strengthen yourself. After some time, we can clear up all the misunderstandings."
The raindrops outside the window hit the glass. He looked at the dancing curve on the monitor, and his voice was tinged with rare tenderness. "Susu is a very perceptive child. She will understand you."
After saying this, Bo Mingxiu changed the subject.
"Your injury must be kept secret. Those old foxes on the board are just waiting to exploit it." He said, his expression softening a little as he thought about something. "Don't let your mother know when she calls. She hates to see you suffer."
Bo Junyi said "hmm" softly.
"One more thing." Bo Mingxiu suddenly paused, tapping his fingertips on the bed rail. "That assistant of yours, I always felt his aura was off the mark the last time we met. Is he the same person?"
A few words couldn't explain it clearly, so Bo Junyi just said "hmm" lightly.
As the pain spread through his spine, he saw the new white hair on his father's temples, and vaguely recalled the tall figure who taught him to play golf twenty years ago.
Bo Mingxiu reached out and covered his son's cold hand.
"To be honest, a marriage between people of equal social status can save a lot of trouble." He looked at his son's sunken eye sockets and softened his voice. "But looking at you like this... Dad really can't bear to be cruel."
"Don't even think about it. When I'm really paralyzed in a wheelchair, I'm afraid Susu will be the only one who won't despise me." Bo Junyi suddenly chuckled, with a hint of self-mockery in his voice.
"Nonsense!" Bo Mingxiu frowned, but suddenly found tears in his son's eyes.
He sighed, his voice muffled in his chest, "Since your heart and eyes are filled with your wife, then take good care of her. Listen to the doctor's advice and make yourself well before you can protect her."
After saying that, he revealed a rare hint of sarcasm: "I thought you were more stable than your sister, but it turns out you're both just as love-brained as her.
Take good care of her, don't let Su Su dislike you later!"
Bo Mingxiu just mentioned it casually, but Bo Junyi engraved these words deeply in his heart.
A thought kept lingering in his mind: What would he do if one day he became a disabled person with limited mobility and lost the ability to protect her?
Should I continue to keep her by my side, or let her go with pain and give her freedom?
