Chapter 9: Past Events

Chapter 9: Past Events

That year, she was 22 years old, graduated from university, and had just received an offer from a large biological company. She was full of energy and ambition when her father Han Yourong's serious illness disrupted the peaceful life of the family of three and brought her, who had just entered the society, to the bottom of the valley.

Han Que has been a beauty since she was young. Although she is smart, hardworking, and has excellent character and academic performance, Liu Suping is very strict with her. She often teaches her to stand and sit properly, not to laugh and play, and not to eat or wear whatever she wants. Apart from school uniform, Han Que has very few clothes, most of which are black, white, gray and blue.

When she started to grow and became a slim and beautiful girl, Liu Suping began to guard against her like a thief.

Han remembered that during the summer vacation after she graduated from junior high school, the weather was still very hot in the evening. She wore a light yellow sleeveless nightgown and took shelter under the shade of a tree in the community. She happened to meet a classmate from Jiang Jin who came to borrow her homework book.

Jiang Jin went out to play ball, and Grandma Jiang was cooking in the kitchen. She was hard of hearing, and the boy didn't hear him even though he called him several times. However, Han couldn't help but tell him that Jiang Jin was not at home.

The boy turned around and looked over, then was stunned.

She had just washed her hair that day and felt the hot air from the hair dryer was too hot, so she draped her wet hair over her shoulders, lifted it up with her hands, and fanned it with a fan. As the sun set, her hair shone with golden light, and her whole body was shrouded in a hazy glow, as if in a dream.

Han had also seen the boy before. After all, he was young and was chatting and laughing under the shade of the tree.

The boy wanted to show off and mentioned that he had just returned from a vacation in Qingdao, how fresh and delicious the seafood was, how delicious the Spanish mackerel dumplings were, how lively and joyful the sea ice bathing beach was, and how beautiful the scenery of Laoshan was.

Han had never seen the sea and was very curious about it.

Seeing Han Que's sweet smile, the boy was so happy that he forgot everything else. He had an idea in his mind and invited her warmly, "Are you free tonight? I'll take you to the lake for a swim."

Han hadn't said anything yet. Liu Suping came home from work and pushed her bicycle into the yard.

Seeing this, he rushed over and slapped Han Que in the face, angrily scolding: "You are a girl, you have no manners at all, with your hair disheveled and giggling. How can you behave like that? Go back and cook."

Han was confused by the slap. He covered his burning cheek with his hands and didn't say a word for a long time. When he came to his senses, he was angry and embarrassed. His face turned red and he ran to the room, covering his mouth.

As soon as the boy realized that something was wrong, he ran away without a trace.

Liu Suping was still angry, berating him in the yard, blabbering non-stop, "You're so naughty at such a young age, running to other people's homes to flirt with girls. You're already in high school, but instead of staying home to do your homework, you're here to attract attention. You look like a bad kid who was born without anyone to teach you."

After scolding for a long time, he still didn't feel satisfied, so he indirectly scolded Jiang Jin for being careless in making friends and bringing all kinds of people into the yard. Grandma Jiang came out of the kitchen with a pot of winter melon soup and happened to hear it. She rolled her eyes in anger.

Liu Suping's old-fashioned and stubborn character made Han Que's teenage life very depressing.

Fortunately, her father Han Yourong was open-minded and generous. He regarded her as the apple of his eye. Whenever he had time, he would take Han Que out to play, go hiking, swimming, visiting parks, and watching movies. He took many beautiful photos of Han Que, but Liu Suping kept them and did not allow them to be shown.

However, Han told Zhou Wenwen that the reason she did not become extremely rebellious and turn into a complete little gangster was mainly because of Han Yourong's patience and tolerance, who was like a big tree protecting her from wind and rain. Otherwise, with her potential for rebellion, she would have had a huge quarrel with Liu Suping sooner or later.

But she didn't expect that she would survive the sentimental, sensitive and changeable adolescence, be admitted to the school that made Han Yourong and Liu Suping proud, spend a peaceful and busy college life, and get an internship offer from a large company with her excellent grades and scholarships every year.

The family finally got what they wanted and is now enjoying great happiness.

Han Yourong and Liu Suping finally breathed a sigh of relief and prepared to use their savings of many years to buy a second-hand house and move out of this old and dilapidated place.

The good times didn't last for two days. During a routine physical examination at the company, it was discovered that Han Yourong was suffering from advanced lung cancer.

"The tumor grew on the patient's aorta. With current medical technology, surgery is no longer possible. We can only rely on chemotherapy to curb the growth of the tumor." The chief expert of the cancer hospital said helplessly.

Han Yourong was only 48 years old that year, his zodiac year.

The family did not dare to gamble and were unwilling to give up. Although Liu Suping had an old-fashioned personality, she had deep feelings for Han Yourong. She accompanied Han Yourong to major hospitals in various places, sought out famous doctors, and took care of him day and night. She slept on the floor or on a recliner, lived frugally, and did her best to give Han Yourong imported medicines with fewer side effects and better efficacy.

After two years of enduring this kind of life, their savings for buying a house were all used up. Han Yourong's sister Han Youfang lent them some money to continue their treatment, but at this point, they no longer had the money to buy expensive imported drugs and could only switch to domestic generic drugs to maintain their survival.

The medicine had serious side effects and was not very effective. Han Yourong's once black hair fell out and he became bald after one course of treatment. He also suffered from anorexia and vomiting, could not eat, suffered from severe pain, groaned, and could not sleep at night. He had to rely on medicine to fall asleep.

After several months, his condition did not improve and showed signs of metastasis. It was beyond recovery. In the last six months, Han Yourong was emaciated, his cheeks were sunken, and he was exhausted. Liu Suping lost control of her emotions and collapsed several times.

Han quit his job and stayed with his parents day and night until Han Yourong passed away.

After finishing Han Yourong's business, she locked herself in the room and slept for three days and three nights. When she appeared in front of everyone again, Han was already a completely different person.

However, Han gave up her major and applied for a sales job at a biotechnology company. Fortunately, she was gentle and beautiful, and was good at reading people's expressions, so her performance was pretty good.

Zhou Wenwen introduced her to a part-time coach at a club to earn another salary.

Yes, she loves money and needs money.

If I had money at the time, I would have been able to give Han Yourong the best medicine. Even if my terminal illness could not be cured, at least I could have prolonged his life, alleviated his pain, and preserved his dignity.

Liu Suping quit her job to take care of Han Yourong. She has not yet reached retirement age and has no pension. She can only rely on community relief subsidies to make ends meet. The debts incurred from Han Yourong's medical treatment fell on Han Que.

Lost life cannot be recovered, but lost wealth can be earned back bit by bit.

She can only work hard to earn money and pay back the money as soon as possible.

Beauty can be a passport to a narrow gate that is not necessarily open to everyone.

Han has the qualifications.

If she wanted to use it, she could probably take a shortcut.

Zhou Hongbin once said to Zhou Wenwen, "Your friend Han Que is a real stunner. With her looks and figure, she wears yoga clothes and does nothing but stand there. All the men in the gym are drooling at the sight of her. If she really wants to make money, it shouldn't be that difficult. It all depends on whether she can put in the effort."

"Han Que isn't that kind of person." Zhou Wenwen disagreed and warned her brother: "Don't try to hit on her, and don't have any evil thoughts about her. Don't be fooled by her soft and weak appearance. When she turns her face, she will deny everything and be extremely fierce. Don't blame me for not warning you in advance."

"Damn it! Capitalists like my brother are always trying to squeeze everyone's surplus value out of them, even his own relatives and friends. He has no humanity at all." Zhou Wenwen gritted her teeth in anger. "Han Que, you better be careful in his club. Don't let him fool you. There are a lot of men with bad intentions in that crappy place. Don't be fooled."

Han smiled without saying anything. She understood what Zhou Wenwen meant. She had been accustomed to seeing men's covetous gazes since she was fourteen.

She also understood the shortcut Zhou Hongbin hinted at, but she didn't feel it was necessary to sell herself out.

What's more, even if it is to be sold, it must be sold at a good price.
