Chapter 38 Jiayan

Chapter 38 Jiayan

Han Que made an appointment to meet Fang Jiayan on the weekend.

Fang Jiayan was on duty in the ward the day before. She followed her instructor on the ward rounds at nine in the morning. By the time she finished writing the medical orders and handed over the shift, it was already half past ten.

In early summer and late spring, there is a drizzle, the air is slightly cool, and there is a gentle breeze.

Their date was at a Pizza Hut restaurant near the hospital where Fang Jiayan worked.

On the weekend, cheerful music was playing in the restaurant and children were laughing, but Han was sitting alone in a corner, his lonely figure out of place with the surrounding environment.

Fang Jiayan paused for a moment before walking up to her, taking a closer look. She shook her head, rather disapprovingly, "You look pale and haggard so early in the morning."

Han smiled and said, "You are not yet, just talking about me."

As he said this, he looked at her face again. Under her neat short hair, Fang Jiayan's porcelain-white face had two very obvious dark circles.

Fang Jiayan looked disapproving and said to her, "How can you compare with me? I just got off the night shift and haven't had breakfast yet. I'm starving."

They hadn't seen each other for a long time and their only contact was through social media, but once they met, they were still very friendly and could talk about anything.

Han secretly thought that all the men she met in her life were unreliable, but these two girlfriends who had grown up with her were in perfect harmony with each other.

She sighed and propped up her chin, "Jia Yan, why do women rely on themselves these days and can't find men who can cherish and protect us?"

"That probability is too low. Instead of trusting others, I'd rather trust myself." Fang Jiayan remained calm. "I'm so hungry. I won't chat with you about life's principles for now. Filling my stomach is more important."

After saying that, he buried his head in scanning the code and began to order food seriously.

Seeing her serious expression, Han couldn't help but say, "The hospital has breakfast, so you can't eat before coming."

Fang Jiayan didn't even look up. "If you ate at the hospital for more than 330 out of 365 days, would you get tired of it?" She had already ordered the food and looked up, putting down her phone. "Even if I didn't get tired of it, my stomach would."

Han Que took a sip of coffee and smiled. "You're busy and have always been a model worker. It's hard to see you. Zhou Wenwen even said the other day that if you want to see Dr. Fang now, you have to go to the outpatient clinic to register."

"She is rich and has free time. She has a man who can cherish her and take good care of her." Seeing Han's eyes widen in surprise, he smiled and explained, "It's her father."

Han heaved a sigh of relief and rolled his eyes at her, "I thought you said she had a boyfriend."

"Even if there were, I wouldn't be the most informed." Fang Jiayan shrugged and sighed slightly. "I'm trapped in that little world of the hospital every day, doing those things endlessly day after day."

"But you're Dr. Fang," Han said. "You have a profession that Wenwen and I both admire."

"Admiration?" Fang Jiayan shook her head slightly. "Do you know how many years it takes to be a doctor? After completing undergraduate and graduate studies, there's the internship period at the hospital, along with endless exams, papers, and scientific experiments. My advisor said that if I want to live my life well, I have to at least become a chief physician. I calculated that I'd have to wait until I'm at least fifty, and by then, I'd be almost retired, so I'd have to live my life to the fullest. Forget it, let's not talk about these things anymore. What about you?" She stretched, leaned back in her chair, and continued to look Han Que up and down. "You look pale, weak, and lacking in energy and blood. What's wrong?"

Han smiled and said, "Have you changed your career to become a Chinese medicine practitioner?" He extended his fair wrist to Fang Jiayan and said, "Observation, smelling, questioning, and palpation?"

Fang Jiayan: "Integrate and apply what you have learned, cure diseases and save lives, no matter which school of thought it is." Then she asked, "Did you break up with that rich second-generation kid?"

Han hummed and lowered her eyes. A spotlight above her head was broken, and the half-light shone on her face, revealing a fragile shadow. Her eyelashes drooped like a pair of gray wings.

She said calmly, "It's boring after breaking up."

Fang Jiayan raised her eyebrows questioningly.

However, Han told her about his recent dispute with Lu Xiaoping and the harsh words his mother had said to her.

Fang Jiayan frowned. "Why don't you break up with a man who was brought up in such a family? You don't run a stewed food shop, why keep that useless pig offal?"

Han was amused by her adjective, and after laughing he said, "Love is the most boring thing in the world."

Fang Jiayan shook her head in disagreement. "Love can stimulate hormone secretion, making you feel a sense of weightlessness and light-hearted happiness. If it doesn't work, then it's meaningless. But that Lu guy is not worthy of you."

This sentence sounds very familiar.

Han thought of the first person who said this. It seemed that after the initial enthusiasm, Gu Ningwei had disappeared without a trace recently.

She lowered her head, stirring her coffee with a straw, and said, "Nowadays, finding someone interesting is harder than climbing to heaven."

Fang Jiayan stared at her charming and bright face for a long time before saying, "It might be difficult for others, but not necessarily for you."

Han snorted and laughed, "You make me sound like a beauty who brings disaster." She sighed and changed the subject: "Let's not talk about these useless things. I'm worried about money."

Fang Jiayan: "Hmm?"

Han mentioned the recent financial disputes. The reason why she asked Fang Jiayan to meet up alone was that she didn't want Zhou Wenwen to know. Otherwise, with her noisy personality, she would rush over and argue with Zhou Hongbin again.

Zhou Hongbin is just the boss and has no reason to tolerate the joys and sorrows, the cold and warmth, and the right and wrong of his employees.

Besides, she has already caused Zhou Hongbin to lose a high-quality client.

Han, fearing Fang Jiayan might misunderstand, said clearly, "I want to take out a loan and pay it back in one lump sum. That way, I won't have to owe money on top of the money I owed." She added, "I just regret that I should have stopped my parents from borrowing money from my aunt. I should have gone to the bank to get a loan. That way, I'd at least be a customer, which would have been better than being constantly hounded for my debt and being reminded of my lifelong gratitude."

Fang Jiayan nodded in agreement. "Sometimes it's better to handle things impartially to avoid getting entangled with relatives. You said you'd be grateful to your aunt forever, and others thought you really should, but I remember when Uncle Han was around, he also told me that your aunt was raised by your parents, so she should be grateful to them forever."

Han Yourong once lived in the hospital where Fang Jiayan worked for a while. Fang Jiayan often went to his ward after work to talk to him, and she also had some feelings for Han Yourong.

Han whispered, "She said she wanted to be grateful to my dad, so she resented me and my mom so much, saying that we didn't take good care of him and didn't give him health supplements."

"Taking health supplements?" Fang Jiayan sneered, "If she really believes that, she's either stupid or has ulterior motives. If health supplements can cure all diseases, then what do we doctors do?"

Han Que smiled bitterly. She knew very well that Han Youfang had been selling that health product with a level of madness that was comparable to joining a pyramid scheme. She had also asked Han Que to follow her many times, and kept saying that with Han Que's sales skills, it would be no problem for him to make millions within a year.

"Forget it, let's not talk about her anymore. Paying back debts is only natural. I've already gone to several banks, and the conditions they offer are very harsh, at least for me. Do you have any acquaintances who can introduce me to her? I don't want to delay it any longer. After I pay her back, I'll have no further dealings with her."

Fang Jiayan frowned and thought: "It seems that there really is one. Let me ask."

When breakfast was served, Fang Jiayan sniffed vigorously and clasped her hands together in an exaggerated manner. "Oh, it smells so good! I'm really starving."

Han smiled. She liked chatting with Fang Jiayan. Doctor Fang's sharp words often made her happy.

It was raining, and the rain left winding trails on the glass windows.

Cars sped past, splashing water on the road, and pedestrians walked hurriedly with umbrellas, their faces expressionless.

Fang Jiayan wolfed down the croissant and took a sip of piping hot coffee, her face looking tired.

Han suddenly felt that this might be their life, hard and difficult, but also with a little warmth.

Two days later, Fang Jiayan gave her the WeChat account of a bank's key account manager, saying that this was the family member of her patient, named Yuan Hao.

Han chatted with Yuanhao on WeChat for a few minutes, and the two agreed to meet in the bank's customer room.

Yuan Hao is obviously a professional financial practitioner. He wears a neat uniform, behaves politely, and speaks very carefully, knowing when to act and when to move forward.

He listened carefully to Han Que's idea, and after ten seconds of contemplation, he said, "Indeed, our bank's approval process is rather cumbersome, because the risk control department is very strict now to prevent bad debts." He paused, glanced at Han Que, and said, "Of course, if you have assets to use as collateral, it will be faster and the interest rate will be much lower. Do you have any real estate under your name?"

Han shook his head.

The dilapidated house she and Liu Suping lived in was not included in the housing reform policy because it was very old. It is still a public rental housing and the property rights are not theirs.

Yuan Hao frowned and said "Oh", his expression unchanged. He tapped the contract sample with his slender fingers and asked again: "Do you have any relatives or friends who can act as guarantors?"

Han smiled and said, "Doctor Fang didn't tell you that I took out a bank loan just to repay the money I borrowed from my relatives as soon as possible. How could I ask her to be my guarantor?"

Yuan Hao lowered his head and smiled, "I heard a few words from Doctor Fang, but..." He thought for a moment and smiled, "Let me help you think of other ways to see if it's possible to do it as quickly as possible."

Han knew that this was actually a form of rejection and farewell, so he nodded and stood up to say goodbye: "Thank you for taking the time to meet me today. I will think of a solution myself. If it really doesn't work, then we can just wait and see. I will try to find a way to deal with my relatives for a few days."

Yuan Hao was not polite either. He stood up and said, "It's okay. It's my duty. Doctor Fang takes very good care of my mother." Then he looked down at the watch on his wrist.

Han, however, understood his intention to see him off, turned around, pushed open the glass door of the reception room, and then looked back: "Please stay, there's no need to see me off."

Yuan Hao politely apologized and said, "The client I had an appointment with has just arrived. I'll go downstairs to greet him."
