Chapter 6: Pursuit
Gu Ningwei took the bottle of sparkling water, took a few sips silently, and glanced around the private room with an indifferent look.
Lu Xiaoping struggled to sit up straight, looking at Gu Ningwei sincerely, "Brother, it's been several years since we last met. If I hadn't run into you by chance at the bar last time and you said hello to me, I would have thought you had forgotten me. After all, you have a lot on your plate."
Gu Ningwei remained expressionless, only smiling faintly as he said, "How could that be? We're all friends, friends in need."
"Yes, yes." Lu Xiaoping laughed. He had been drinking and couldn't control himself. He clung to Gu Ningwei's arm and said, "Yes, a friend in need. If you hadn't come to my rescue that time, I would have lost my life on the road to Bingchacha."
As he spoke, he took the cup and touched it to the other one, "Brother, this wine is for you."
"You're being polite." Gu Ningwei clinked his glass lightly, took a sip of sparkling water, and tapped the armrest of the sofa with one hand. "When we're out and about, we're friends and we have to help each other. Since I've met him, there's no reason not to help."
Lu Xiaoping drank the entire glass of wine in one gulp, wiped the wine stains from the corners of his mouth, and said proudly, "Brother, if you need me in the future, just let me know. Although I'm not as capable as you, I will definitely do my best."
Gu Ningwei smiled, "You're too polite. How could I..." He paused, his eyes fell on Han Que's face who was sitting quietly not far away, and then smiled, "Okay, I'll talk to you if I need anything."
Lu Xiaoping nodded heavily, "Brother, if you need anything, please don't be polite to me."
Gu Ningwei hummed and whispered, "No."
Lu Xiaoping was stunned. He stared at Gu Ningwei blankly. He thought for a while, but couldn't think of how he could help Gu Ningwei.
He is much more capable than me.
Gu Ningwei glanced at him and said half-seriously, "I won't be polite."
Lu Xiaoping: “…”
He could only grin and nod.
Guo Peng and Xu Tao also sat down. Guo Peng handed a cigarette to Gu Ningwei and said familiarly, "Ningwei, long time no see. We often see news about your family on the news. Celebrities are just different. I heard that you plan to be an active successor to the proletariat?"
Gu Ningwei waved his hand to indicate that he didn't want to smoke.
"What proletariat? They are the real big capitalists, the big bourgeoisie." Xu Tao retorted with a smile, holding up his glass attentively, and said with a smile, "Ning Wei, don't listen to Guo Peng. He's drunk and might say the wrong thing."
"Yes, yes, I said the wrong thing. I deserve to be punished." Guo Peng said, picked up the newly opened bottle of Hennessy, poured a full glass, and drank it all.
Lu Xiaoping grumbled in dissatisfaction: "I didn't open the wine for you."
Han sat aside, watching coldly as they entertained Gu Ningwei in a tight manner.
Even those women who disdained to talk to her gathered around her, some speaking in sweet voices, some being lively and cute, and some being charming and touching, each of them radiating brilliance.
"Mr. Gu, can I add you on WeChat?"
The girl who made the joke just now, wearing the Pinduoduo item with free shipping for 9.9 yuan, smiled at Gu Ningwei.
Gu Ningwei touched his pocket and said apologetically, "Sorry, I think I left my phone in the car."
Seeing the other person's lost eyes, he asked again: "Is there something wrong?"
"My family is thinking of buying a house from your group. I'd like to ask if you can give me a discount?" the girl said coquettishly.
"Oh, about that... I'm really sorry," Gu Ningwei said with a sincere expression. "The real estate department is directly managed by our elders. I can't interfere or have a say..." He paused and said, "However, when you go to the sales office, mention my name and see if the manager will give me some respect."
It was such an obvious rejection, but he spoke so seriously.
Han Quewei pursed her lips, smiled, raised her eyes, met Gu Ningwei's gaze, and he winked at her.
Han looked away and saw him holding the bottle of water in his hand, leaning casually on the sofa, listening to Lu Xiaoping and Guo Peng telling others how Gu Ningwei saved them when they were in danger in the wild that year.
The girls listened attentively, occasionally exclaiming in surprise.
Chen Yayi stood up from beside them, frowned, squeezed across the sofa, and walked to the song-ordering counter with a swaying figure. She ordered a song, sat cross-legged on the high stool, held the microphone in one hand and a cigarette in the other, and began to sing a French song with her red lips slightly opened. Her voice was slightly hoarse and mellow, lazy and confused, and she sang very beautifully.
When she finished singing, no one paid any attention, except Han, who clapped his hands to express his praise.
Gu Ningwei looked at her again across the crowd.
Their eyes met and there was a brief pause of ten seconds, but Han looked away first and checked the time on her phone. It seemed that Lu Xiaoping didn't need her help with socializing today, so she prepared to leave.
So she touched his shoulder with her finger and said, "I'm going back first. I have to go to work tomorrow."
Lu Xiaoping was in the middle of a conversation, but when he heard this, he turned back and was startled. He apologized and said, "You want to go back? Play for a while longer."
Han shook his head and said, "Forget it, you continue to accompany the guests. Don't worry about me. I'll take a taxi."
Lu Xiaoping knew that she was unhappy today, but he couldn't care less at the moment. Between Han Que's mood and Gu Ningwei, he chose the latter without hesitation.
So I had to whisper soothingly, "Is that so? Then be careful on the road and text me when you get home."
Han nodded, put on his coat, picked up his bag, and said politely, "Take your time and have fun."
No one agreed to her request.
Only Chen Yayi stopped singing and shouted to Han Que, "Are you leaving now?"
Han said, "Yeah, I have to go to work tomorrow, so I'm going back first."
Chen Yayi shook her phone and said, "Okay, bye. Remember to add me on WeChat."
Han said okay and waved to her as a farewell.
The moment the door of the private room closed, Han vaguely heard Chen Yayi scolding Lu Xiaoping with the microphone, "You are too unreasonable. You called her here, but you didn't see her off. You are not gentlemanly at all. You still treat her as your girlfriend."
"Oh, I have guests here. Besides, Han Que is used to being independent, so it's okay for her to go back alone." Lu Xiaoping defended.
Han shook his head secretly and walked to the elevator.
In the hall, beautifully dressed women were sitting in groups of three or four, chatting in low voices, and some of them looked up at her curiously.
However, Han saw his own reflection in the stainless steel mirror of the elevator. He was wearing a black sports sweatshirt, jeans, and a beige jacket. This outfit, which they called the free shipping Pinduoduo item, was obviously out of place here.
But how good it is this way, she doesn't need Lu Xiaoping by her side.
Walking out of the hallway, the wind started to blow, and she pulled up the hood of her sweatshirt.
It was a chilly spring day and a drizzle began to fall in the middle of the night, but Han was walking along the road. He happened to look back and saw the unique curtain-wall building of Xilanfang with its bright lights, like a transparent glass box. It seemed unreal through the misty drizzle.
It was late at night, with few people walking around. It was a remote and quiet place, and the only sound I could hear was my own hurried footsteps.
She quickened her pace, planning to walk to the main road and then call a taxi.
A black Maybach quietly drove past and stopped beside her. The smoky gray window rolled down and the person inside looked at her with a smile in his dark eyes. "Han Que, there are no taxis here. Let me take you there."
