The rustling sound was heard not only by Tang Shengkai, but also by Bu Mancang and the tense Fei Shuwen.
At this moment, Bu Mancang and Fei Shuwen stood above the abyss. The pursuing agents caught up with them, and the rustling sound was like the footsteps of death, instantly making the atmosphere extremely tense.
Bu Mancang's heart clenched, as if an icy hand had gripped his heart. Countless thoughts flashed through his mind: "It's over, we're doomed. How can they keep up with the speed of guns? Are we really going to die here today?"
But would he admit defeat? Impossible! Bu Mancang would never admit defeat. Bu Mancang grabbed Fei Shuwen's arm forcefully, as if to charge forward.
But why couldn't he pull it?
As soon as Fei Shuwen stepped onto the wooden board, he instinctively clenched his fists and closed his eyes, trying to overcome his fear.
But before he could adjust his mindset, he heard a rustling sound behind him. He stared intently in the direction the sound was coming from, and large beads of sweat appeared on his forehead.
But his legs felt like they were made of lead, and moving even a little was incredibly difficult. After all, they were currently on the edge of an abyss, and he couldn't go forward or backward.
Fei Shuwen's face grew paler and paler, and he felt a pang of regret: he should have stayed until the very end; now that kid Bu Mancang definitely wouldn't let go of him and leave on his own.
'Ugh! If only I could have moved a little faster, even just a few seconds earlier, to get through this damn abyss! What am I going to do now?'
He had never mentioned his fear of heights. Over the years, he had trained diligently in the military and had been able to overcome most height obstacles. But now, there was an abyss below.
Fei Shuwen didn't even have the courage to look down, and his legs were weak and trembling slightly, so he simply didn't have the strength to walk over.
Bu Mancang turned his head to look at Fei Shuwen suspiciously. Seeing Fei's deathly pale face, Bu Mancang suddenly realized something. "Old Fei, you?"
"Stop talking nonsense and get going!"
Fei Shuwen slapped Bu Mancang's hand away, "Hurry up, it'll be too late if we don't leave now."
Bu Mancang glanced back at his back. The enemy had not yet shown themselves. He gritted his teeth and took a step toward Fei Shuwen, standing with Fei Shuwen on two logs.
Fei Shuwen knew what he was going to do. He wanted to refuse, but then he suddenly remembered that he was behind him and could take a bullet for the kid. That was the last thing he could do for him.
Bu Mancang had already bent over, but Fei Shuwen did not lean on his back.
"Old Fei, hurry up, there's no time."
Bu Mancang turned around and inadvertently caught a glimpse of an enemy's clothing in the woods. Bu Mancang's eyes turned bloodshot, and he could no longer wait for Lao Fei. He reached out, grabbed Lao Fei, and charged forward.
These actions happened in just a few moments, but the other side had already noticed what was happening.
"Why isn't Lao Fei leaving?" Chen Erniu asked suspiciously.
Li Weiguo glanced at him but didn't say anything, and Xu Hongchang pursed his lips and didn't speak either. Everyone was smart enough to see Lao Fei's condition, but now was not the time to talk about these things.
At this moment, Fei Shuwen clung tightly to Bu Mancang's back, completely blocking his view. His gaze quickly swept towards Tang Shengkai and Xu Hongchang on the opposite bank, his eyes filled with urgency and anticipation.
He hoped Tang Shengkai could come up with some other way to deal with this desperate situation. He didn't need to worry about Tang Shengkai, but he had to protect Bu Mancang no matter what. His hand unconsciously went to his waist, even though there were no bullets there anymore. This action seemed to be an instinct, bringing him some psychological comfort.
Seeing this, Xu Hongchang on the opposite bank felt a pang of unease, realizing something was wrong. He was frantic, trying to figure out how to stop the agents from getting closer while worrying about the safety of his comrades in the abyss. His mind was in turmoil: "I can't let anything happen to my brothers, but we're out of weapons now. How can we stop the enemy on the other side?"
Without Fei Shuwen saying anything, Xu Hongchang could tell from his actions that the enemy was probably right behind them, and might already be aiming at them, ready to fire.
Xu Hongchang's eyes were bloodshot, yet they still shone with determination. He quickly looked around, trying to find something he could use to fend off the spies.
Upon seeing the situation on the opposite bank, Chen Erniu's eyes widened, and a surge of anger welled up within him. He gritted his teeth and muttered a curse in a low voice:
"Those damn Japanese devils, they really are like ghosts that won't leave you alone!"
His body was trembling slightly, filled with both resentment towards the spies and worry for his comrades in danger. He was extremely anxious, wishing he could rush over and fight the spies to the death, but reason told him that acting impulsively now would only make the situation worse.
Xu Hongchang was extremely anxious. As the battalion commander, he knew he had to remain calm. He tried his best to calm himself down and kept telling himself, "Don't panic, don't panic, there must be a way. We've overcome so many difficulties before, we can do it this time too."
But why can't I calm down? Damn it, if this doesn't work, I might as well fight them.
Everyone's hearts were in their throats. The shadowy figures of spies in the jungle opposite made them feel as if they were shrouded in an invisible net, and the shadow of death gripped everyone's hearts.
Even so, there was no sign of retreat in their eyes, only a desire to survive and a firm determination never to yield to the enemy. After all, they were Chinese soldiers, and even if they died, they would die with dignity and would never let the enemy succeed easily.
They prayed in their hearts, "Hurry, hurry!" Seeing that Bu Mancang had already carried Fei Shuwen two-thirds of the way across the logs, they were not yet happy about the impending victory.
