Tang Yue pointed her chin towards the direction of the US Army's Base 9, "Since the next stop is Base 9, let's explore that area."
The group set off immediately. The weeds were knee-high. Tang Yue walked at the front, holding her homemade detector. The copper coils at the top of the branches gleamed with an eerie blue light in the sunlight.
Chang Yin gripped his gun and warily scanned his surroundings. The occasional rustling from the bushes made him tense. Tang Shengkai, carrying a tool bag, would occasionally pull out a map to check his location, beads of sweat sliding down his sun-darkened face.
"Dad, look at this!" Tang Yue suddenly stopped, the indicator light on the detector in her hand flashing wildly. Chang Yin and Tang Shengkai quickly stepped forward. The red line on the map Tang Yue had just casually drawn coincided with their location—this was the theoretical path of the communication line at Base 9.
"It really works?" Tang Shengkai looked at his daughter in disbelief, his rough hands rubbing the detector. Tang Yue smiled slightly.
Chang Yin was speechless. The US military really wasn't worried about their communication equipment at all; it was so easily detected.
"Daughter, do you have any tools? Daddy will dig and see." Tang Shengkai was already prepared.
Tang Yue gently raised her small hand, and in an instant, the telephone line buried underground seemed to be pulled by an invisible hand. As the soil churned, the black cable broke through the soil, and the US military markings on its surface were clearly visible.
Chang Yin's eyes darkened. So spiritual power could be used in this way?
Tang Yue was as excited as if she had discovered a new toy. She took out the crimping tool and telephone she always carried with her and quickly connected the phone.
"That's it?" Tang Shengkai stared wide-eyed at the phone on the ground. Tang Yue patted the dirt off her hands and looked around. This place was quite secluded. She grabbed three small stools and said, "Okay, let's rest for a bit."
Tang Yue was still worried about her family, so she decided to call Commander Kang.
Tang Yue had just sat down on the small stool and hadn't even reached for the phone beside her when the black phone, which had just been connected, suddenly rang. The sharp ringing sound was particularly jarring in the silent wilderness.
The group tensed up instantly, and Tang Yue grabbed the microphone as if she'd been electrocuted. She was a little dazed after picking it up, but she still put it to her ear.
The receiver crackled with static, followed by a frantic shout from someone with a thick American accent: "Michael, great news! Immediately deploy all forces from Base 9 to attack Hill 13! This time, all forces on the battlefield will march towards Hill 13, and the Chinese army will be annihilated by us!"
The other party spoke with extreme confidence, as if the Chinese army was already in their grasp and could be obtained with ease.
Tang Yue's fingers gripped the receiver tightly, her eyes as dark as an abyss. Why was the US military so confident this time?
She handed the microphone to Chang Yin, gesturing casually. Chang Yin had also just heard Mi Jun's instructions. He shared the same thought as Tang Yue. Chang Yin remained calm, deliberately lowering his voice to ask in fluent American English, "Why the sudden change?"
"Oh, Michael, something sounds off about your voice?"
"No! I just took a short rest. Several US military bases have been attacked recently, and I'm very worried about Base 9." Tang Yue and Tang Shengkai stared intently at Chang Yin; this guy's ability to adapt to unexpected situations was quite impressive.
"Oh, alright. I should believe you. According to reliable sources, the Chinese army is assembling and heading to Base 5. The situation there is currently tense, and headquarters' intention is not to give China another chance to send troops, so all Chinese troops must be intercepted outside Hill 13."
Michael, I have a feeling that after this battle, we can go home.
Chang Yin feigned excitement, "I really look forward to that day. But, am I really ready?"
"Don't worry about anything else. Order the troops to move out immediately. We'll meet at Hill 13."
"Okay, goodbye!"
The phone was abruptly disconnected with a "click," leaving only the busy tone echoing in the air.
Chang Yin put down the receiver and exchanged a solemn look with Tang Shengkai and Tang Yue.
"This message must be relayed back to the troops immediately!" Chang Yin's voice was stern.
Just as Tang Yue was about to speak, the phone rang again. Tang Yue gave Chang Yin a look that said, "You answer it," in case the officer from before still had something to say.
Chang Yin picked up the phone but before he could speak, the other party said, "Hello, this is Michael. Please transfer me to Colonel Westley."
Chang Yin and Tang Yue exchanged a glance. This was too much of a coincidence. Chang Yin immediately replied, "Hello, Commander Michael, Colonel Westley is not here right now. Is there anything you need me to pass on?"
Michael paused for a moment, then said, "It's like this, several US military bases have been attacked inexplicably recently. I asked Colonel Westley about it a few days ago, and he said there would be news in the next couple of days."
Chang Yin seemed to understand. "Oh, I see. Colonel Westley just gave the order that you were not able to reach him by phone. Colonel Westley ordered you to take all the troops from Base 9 to Hill 13 in three days."
Michael had no objections. However, he still asked, "By the way, when will the supplies I requested a few days ago arrive? Colonel Westley said a large batch of supplies would arrive soon; I wonder if they've reached the battlefield yet?"
Chang Yin was unambiguous: "They should arrive in the next day or two. If the supplies cannot be delivered to Base 9 in time, we can arrange to pick them up en route. We'll discuss that later."
"Okay, then we'll set off in 3 days."
"Yes. Fight for the free world!"
Chang Yin then decisively hung up the phone. Tang Shengkai looked at him with admiration, "Battalion Commander Chang, if I hadn't been there, I would have really thought that was what a qualified American soldier would say."
