Chapter 465 Escort Mission

465

For the past two weeks, Tang Shengkai has been recuperating in his hospital bed, while Chang Yin and Fei Shuwen have been carrying out the US military's mission in a routine manner, but in their hearts they are always concerned about the plan to rescue Commander Han.

Chang Yin often stared out the window in a daze late at night. He desperately wanted to participate in this operation, but the distrust of these "outsiders" by the American soldiers was like an invisible wall standing in front of him, leaving him at a loss.

This wasn't the most suffocating thing for them. If they received reliable information, they would definitely go to rescue him, even if it meant leaving the US military. However, he had been inquiring from various sources recently, but hadn't received any news at all.

That day, sunlight streamed through the hospital room window, bathing the entire room in a warm glow, but it couldn't dispel the gloom in Chang Yin's heart.

Suddenly, a series of hurried footsteps approached, and an American soldier flung open the door, shouting in a curt tone, "Hey! You're lucky, the colonel wants to see you, now!"

Chang Yin and Tang Shengkai exchanged a glance, a hint of doubt flashing in their eyes.

Tang Shengkai "forced" himself to sit up from the hospital bed. If he were an ordinary soldier, his injuries would likely be quite serious. However, in order to be able to participate in any emergency missions, Tang Shengkai had secretly used his spiritual power to heal his internal injuries. It wasn't apparent on the surface.

The two men straightened their uniforms and followed the soldier out of the ward, their steps slow.

In the corridor, other American soldiers cast curious or disdainful glances at them, and whispers occasionally reached their ears. Chang Yin and Tang Shengkai straightened their backs, trying their best to appear calm and composed. Although they didn't know why the colonel had summoned them, they didn't think they had been exposed.

Upon arriving at the colonel's office, Da Bing knocked forcefully on the door. After receiving permission, Chang Yin and Tang Shengkai pushed the door open and entered. The walls of the office were adorned with U.S. military flags and maps. The colonel sat behind a long desk, a cigar dangling from his lips, his eyes sharply fixed on them.

"Have a seat." The colonel gestured to the chair opposite him, his tone neither warm nor cold.

Chang Yin and Tang Shengkai sat down cautiously, waiting for the colonel to speak. The colonel exhaled a smoke ring, and through the swirling smoke, his voice carried a hint of inscrutable meaning: "I heard you guys have been doing quite well here?"

Chang Yin remained expressionless and quickly said, "Thank you for your recognition, sir. We will continue to serve the U.S. military."

The colonel looked at him with a half-smile, then suddenly changed the subject: "There's an escort mission that needs reliable people. Do you think you're suitable?"

Tang Shengkai's heart skipped a beat, but he knew where he was and his expression didn't change at all.

Chang Yin said calmly, "We will follow your orders and do our best." The colonel stared at them for a long time, as if trying to see through them, before slowly saying, "This time we are escorting an important person. You must understand that if anything goes wrong, you will bear the consequences. Prepare well, we will depart tomorrow."

Chang Yin and Tang Shengkai suppressed their excitement, stood up, saluted, and left the office.

As soon as they stepped outside, Tang Shengkai couldn't wait to say in a voice only the two of them could hear, "Old Chang, the opportunity has come!"

Chang Yin frowned, looking cautious: "Don't be too happy yet. The US military's sudden arrangement for us is definitely not that simple. It might be a trap. We need to be careful."

That night, Chang Yin slipped past the patrolling soldiers and tiptoed to Fei Shuwen's residence. Inside, Fei Shuwen was wiping his pistol in the dim light when he heard the faint footsteps. He looked up alertly and, seeing Chang Yin, immediately put his gun away.

"Old Fei, the colonel has assigned us an escort mission. We'll be leaving tomorrow." Chang Yin lowered his voice and quickly recounted the events of the day. "This might be a good opportunity to rescue Commander Han. We'd like to bring you along, but you haven't received any orders. You'll have to apply to the colonel."

Fei Shuwen gripped his pistol tightly, a determined glint in his eyes: "Fine! I've wanted to leave here for a long time. Is Old Tang alright now? I'm going to find that colonel right now."

The two exchanged a glance, nodded in tacit agreement, and then walked toward the colonel's office.

The office door was ajar, and dim light shone through the crack. Chang Yin and Fei Shuwen took a deep breath and knocked. "Come in!" came the colonel's deep voice from inside.

As the door opened, a strong smell of cigars wafted out. The colonel sat at his desk, staring at the documents on it, and asked without looking up, "What is it?"

Fei Shuwen stepped forward, straightened his back, and tried to make his voice sound calm: "Sir, I heard there's an escort mission that two of my friends are involved in. I'd like to join them on this mission. Please grant me permission, Colonel!"

The colonel finally raised his head, his sharp gaze sweeping over Fei Shuwen like a knife, then looked at Chang Yin standing to the side, a half-smile curving his lips: "Oh? You volunteered? Why? Everyone else is trying to avoid you, but you're eager to go."

Fei Shuwen's heart tightened. He didn't understand what the colonel meant, but he remained calm: "Sir, I've been in the army for so long and have always longed to contribute to the army."

"This escort of an important figure carries a heavy responsibility. I believe in my abilities and want to prove my loyalty to the US military."

"Loyalty?" The colonel scoffed, lighting a cigar and taking a deep drag, smoke billowing in front of him. "With me, words alone aren't enough. Tell me, what makes you so special that you're better suited for this task than anyone else?"

Fei Shuwen's mind raced as he considered how to respond: "Sir, I have accumulated rich experience in the army and am familiar with various terrains and combat strategies. Moreover, I am good at communicating and cooperating with people, especially in handling emergencies. I think I would be suitable for this mission."
