I also admire Xu Hongchang. Despite such a wound, he followed them through the Qinling Mountains for seven days without uttering a sound.
"If only we had the tools." Tang Shengkai took a deep breath.
"Tools? Heh, we have no medical facilities whatsoever." Chen Erniu's voice carried a hint of helplessness.
“It’s alright, we can use the simplest method.” Tang Shengkai gritted his teeth, a determined look in his eyes. “No matter what, we must remove the bullet as soon as possible.”
The crowd gathered around, their eyes filled with concern and tension. They all knew they couldn't continue; it would endanger Battalion Commander Xu's life.
Xu Hongchang forced a smile, "It's okay, I can still manage."
After saying that, he looked at Tang Shengkai and said, "If you're going to retrieve it, be quick. It's no big deal. I heard that Old Tang has also suffered a gunshot wound to his leg before. You have experience, so you can retrieve it."
Tang Shengkai didn't refuse. In fact, he knew that kind of pain, and he hoped that Xu Hongchang could faint, which would reduce some of the suffering. But he knew that Xu Hongchang would never agree.
Tang Shengkai rinsed the dagger with water from the kettle, then heated it over the fire in the pit before stabbing it into Xu Hongchang's wound.
"How do you feel?" Tang Shengkai asked, staring intently at the wound.
Xu Hongchang frowned slightly, then relaxed, trying to remain calm. "It's alright, continue."
Tang Shengkai nodded. He used his dagger to make a cross on the wound, then inserted the tip directly into the wound to try and locate the bullet. He was extremely careful throughout, not wanting Xu Hongchang to suffer any further harm.
However, none of the people around had any medical experience. All they knew was verbal knowledge learned in class at night. Seeing Tang Shengkai plunge the dagger into his flesh, even the most fearless men grimaced slightly.
"I found it." Tang Shengkai's voice was filled with joy as he gently pressed his fingers against the edge of the wound, trying to remove the bullet.
Unfortunately, the first attempt failed.
"Slow down, don't rush." Bu Mancang's voice carried a hint of nervousness.
Not only Bu Mancang, but also Chen Erniu, Li Weiguo, Wang Junhui, and Fei Shuwen were very nervous.
Tang Shengkai took a deep breath and focused his attention. In an instant, he seemed to see the bullet inside the wound. He didn't have time to figure out what was happening; he slowly applied pressure.
Just as he was about to pull out the bullet, Xu Hongchang's body trembled uncontrollably, and pain surged through him like a tidal wave. Fei Shuwen and Li Weiguo immediately held Xu Hongchang down.
"Bear with it, it'll be over soon." Tang Shengkai's voice carried a hint of encouragement.
