Chapter 477 Born from a Crack in the Rock

477

As dusk fell like blood, the last rays of the setting sun spilled onto the battlefield, where the smoke of battle still lingered, draping the ravaged land in a dark red veil. Chang Yin vigilantly observed his surroundings, constantly listening for any sounds from afar, fearing the sudden appearance of pursuing American troops.

The sight of Tang Nan and his son Tang Shengkai embracing each other warmed his heart, but the current situation did not allow him a moment's relaxation.

Han Rusong leaned against the tree trunk, his figure thin but standing straight, still exuding an imposing aura.

He glanced at Chang Yin's mud-covered American combat uniform, a glint of shrewdness flashing in his cloudy eyes. Everything else could wait, but there was one thing that needed to be done immediately.

As a seasoned veteran, he knew that Chang Yin's presence here must have a deeper meaning, and that this enemy uniform might be the key to completing an important mission.

"Chang Yin!" Han Rusong's voice was deep and hoarse, yet carried an undeniable authority, making it exceptionally clear in the silent mountain forest.

Upon hearing the voice, Chang Yin immediately turned around, straightened his back, and looked at Han Rusong with a serious expression. His years of military service had made him fully focused the moment he heard the order.

Han Rusong paused, his gaze passing over Chang Yin and looking towards the distant mountains shrouded in twilight, as if he were pondering something.

After a moment, he withdrew his gaze, looked directly into Chang Yin's eyes, and said, word by word, "As the Commander-in-Chief of the battlefield, I am giving you a secret mission—to destroy the US Army's control center and satellite base at Base 5!"

The moment the words were spoken, the air seemed to freeze. Tang Nan and Tang Shengkai also stopped talking and turned their gazes in this direction.

Chang Yin's pupils contracted slightly. Commander Han's order coincided with what he wanted to do. It seemed that Commander Han also knew the secret of the US Army's Base 5.

Base 5, as a key US military stronghold, was undoubtedly heavily guarded. Successfully destroying its central control center and satellite base would be tantamount to pulling teeth from a tiger's mouth. But his sense of duty and desire for victory made him hesitate without the slightest hesitation.

"Yes, sir! Mission accomplished!" Chang Yin answered loudly, his voice strong and clear, echoing through the mountains and forests. His straight back and resolute eyes demonstrated the responsibility of a soldier.

He then stood at attention, gave a crisp military salute, and said, "Commander Han, I, Chang Yinyi, hereby swear that I will fulfill my mission as a soldier, even if it costs me my last ounce of strength! If I break this oath, I am willing to be punished by military law!"

Han Rusong nodded slightly, a look of relief in his eyes. He reached out to help Chang Yin up and said earnestly, "Chang Yin, I believe in your abilities. This journey is extremely dangerous, so you must proceed with utmost care."

"The US Army's Base 5 is their core hub. Once destroyed, the enemy's command system and communication network will be paralyzed, which is a crucial step for our entire war effort."

“I understand, Commander Han!” Chang Yin replied firmly.

Tang Shengkai stepped forward and stood solemnly behind Chang Yin. Although he didn't say a word, his meaning was clear: he would cooperate with Chang Yin to complete this mission.

Fei Shuwen also agreed without hesitation. Although his abilities weren't as strong as Chang Yin's or Tang Shengkai's, he had served as a political commissar for many years and was certainly useful. Besides, they were originally a team of four. Now that Chang Yin was taking on such a difficult mission, they would go no matter what.

As darkness fell, the last rays of the setting sun were swallowed by dark clouds, and a suffocating atmosphere filled the mountains and forests. Chang Yin and his three companions huddled behind a secluded rock.

Han Rusong leaned against a rock, his gaze sweeping heavily over Chang Yin, Fei Shuwen, and Tang Shengkai. "I must make it clear that you will not be providing any support for this mission."

His voice was deep and hoarse, each word striking like a heavy hammer into everyone's hearts.

“The US Army’s Base 5 is heavily guarded, and our forces are scattered in various locations, making it impossible to send personnel to assist you. That’s only one reason. In addition, I was just rescued by Tang Nan and haven’t had time to contact headquarters yet.”

Furthermore, this mission is extremely secretive; the more people who know about it, the more difficult it may be to complete.

Without needing Han Rusong to say anything more, Chang Yin understood Commander Han's meaning. His gaze grew even more resolute, and he stood ramrod straight, saying in a deep voice, "Commander Han, we understand the difficulty of the mission. But soldiers are duty-bound to obey orders, and even if there are only four of us, we will never back down!"

Fei Shuwen silently wiped the dagger in his hand, the sharp blade gleaming coldly in the firelight. "We were prepared long ago. No matter what, we will complete the mission!"

Han Rusong looked at the group, his gaze lingering on Chang Yin and Tang Shengkai. He had given such an order, wasn't he essentially sending them to their deaths? But this was a battlefield, and sacrifice was inevitable.

Han Rusong's gaze towards Chang Yin was complex at this moment. The Chang family had only two saplings, but the other one was far inferior to this one. If he were to personally send this sapling away... Sigh, if he could return alive, he would personally apologize to Old Chang.

If he couldn't go back, Han Rusong would feel a little better. He would go down to the underworld to atone for the child's sins.

His gaze lingered on Tang Shengkai's face. This child, sigh, has such a hard life. Having not enjoyed his parents' love for over 30 years, he doesn't need it anymore at his age.

Let's just pretend he popped out of a rock. Without hope, there's no disappointment. Isn't that right? If there truly is an afterlife, I hope this child is reborn into a good family.

Tang Shengkai noticed Han Rusong's gaze. Not only this time, but in the dozen or so minutes they had spent together, Commander Han had looked at him at least dozens of times.
